New AF Reserve Status Policy Is Announced New criteria under which eligible air force reservists may apply for transfer from "ready" reserve status to "standby" reserve status was announced today by Maj. Gen. Alfred A. Kessler, Jr., commanding general of Fourth air force. This new policy affects all west coast reservists residing in the Fourth air force area (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada, California and Arizona). "The armed forces reserve act of 1952 established two major categories for reservists—'Ready' and 'standby.'" General Kessler pointed out. "Members of the 'Ready' reserve are available for active service when needed during an emergency declared by the president. Only war or congressional action would normally summon the 'standby' reservists." There are three ways in which a reservoir may become eligible for 'standby' reserve status: (1) Five years active military duty, or (2) one year of active military duty during World War II and one year of active duty since the Korean conflict began, or (3) active military duty and reserve training totalling five years. The vacation is part of the Army's policy to give front-line soldiers respite from combat. At the same time soldiers at the "R and R" hotels have been afforded opportunities to visit the well-stocked Army stores (Post Exchanges) established for their convenience and holiday shopping. Packaging and mailing services are set up at most of these centers. Corporal Borley, a jeep driver, joined the division last April. He entered the Army in May 1951. HUNTER MAKES THREE MISTAKES HELENA, Mont. — County Sheriff Dave Middlemas here took into custody a 20-year-old hunter who admitted shooting two elk intentionally before shooting himself accidentally. The sheriff said he hunted first shot a cow elk and when he started to dress it a big bull elk came out of the woods. The hunter downed the bull, finally killing it with a shot in the head. Then the hunter admitted shooting himself when he jammed the 22 caliber pistol into a hip holster. The seriff said he got into the case when the hunter, after medical treatment, hauled the bull away but left the cow where it was shot—undressed, a Montana game law violation.
