IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL
25 Years Ago
Walter Nelpp, the popular manager of the Safeway store at 141 W. Center st., is enjoying a short vacation at San Juan Hot springs.
Death claimed another pioneer of Northern California in the passing early Friday of Mrs. Margaret Strain, aged 76, a resident of Placentia for 44 years. Mrs. Strain was born in Ireland and came to this country in 1880. She leaves her husband, Thomas Strain and five children. They are Mrs. A. Pierotti, Mrs. Geo. Key, Miss May Stain, of Los Angeles; Mrs. Frank of Woodland and Thomas Strain, Jr., of Fresno.

Last evening the Republicans held a rally at the opera-house. It was an old-fashioned rouser. Capt. M. J. Daniels of Riverside, W. W. Peck, the eloquent political orator, C. C. Chapman, and other distinguished gentlemen were present. Richard Melrose presided.
Fred Beiler of Detroit, Mich., is here visiting his cousin, Oscar Renner. He will remain several weeks, viewing the sights and enjoying our climate.

In May last Mr. Bennett, engineer at A. Guy Smith & Co.'s mills had a horse saddle and bridle stolen. From a clue obtained some days ago he traced the stolen property to Riverside, San Bernardino county. It was there found in possession of the Justice of the Peace who had purchased it from a young Mexican who claimed to be the son of Pedro Lopez of Anaheim. The young man was arrested and it transpires that his name is Fredreco Franco. He will be examined in AF Announces Active Duty Posts for Pilots
New active duty openings for two hundred and fifty volunteer air force reserve pilots for all types of aircraft was announced today by Major General Alfred A. Kessler, Jr., commanding general, Fourth air force.
General Kessler stated that a similar quota for 62 reserve pilots announced Dec. 4 had been completely filled this week.
All officers selected to fill the new ouota will report in February, March or April. 1953, and will be assigned to the 2700th air force indoctrination wing, Lackland air force base, Texas.
Ten days of processing will be required at Lackland before they are ordered to their duty stations with eight weeks refresher flight training at a civilian contract school.
Officers requesting volunteer recall to active duty in the grade of lieutenant must not have reached their 30th birthday.
Those being recalled in grades from captain through lieutenant colonel must not have reached their 36th birthday and must have a total of 500 hours flying time with at least 250 hours as first pilot.
All officers applying will submit with their application either

GIFTS — Are Christmas gifts practical? Or are most such gifts just items bought on the spur of the moment? Someone said that 70 per cent of the pipes men smoke are bought by women as presents. Do women buy these pipes with the man's taste in mind? Or do they buy a pipe that appeals to them? Wonder if a woman ever bought a corn cob pipe for her hubby or boy friend? Wonder if a woman ever regrets that she bought hubby a pipe after he gets it broken in and smudges up the house? It isn't the gift—but the sentiment behind it, huh?
FORECAST—An Anaheim star-gazer writes that big things are in the making for Anaheim and the United States in 1953. These prognosticators have done right well in the past. So has the old Gazetteer. We've given you the low down on the higher ups together with long range predictions like Clare Van Hoorebeke's Anahi footballers coming through. They did. We said Yorba Linda's Dick Nixon was No. 1 candidate for General Dwight Eisenhower's running mate. That he was. Then we said Gov. Earl Warren would have to appoint a successor to Nixon. He has, but he hasn't appointed Tommy Kuchel, yet.
PASSING — Dr. Lee Deming, the outstanding Anaheim who is devoting most of his time these days to the promotion of youth activities. Once an outstanding Olympic sprinter, the Doc is now raising funds for the Boy Scouts headquarters. He's set his goal at $100,000 . . . Homer Wallace's building permit-valuation figures for the year will show that Anaheim built $2,000,000 more this year than last year. That's a record only Santa Ana and Fullerton will surpass . . . Hal (Skeets) Gregg's "dead arm" is coming to life again. He may have another good year with Oakland . . . Herb Grimm, the Anaheim egg man, is one of the most progressive poultrymen in the business. His "henry" is a model for others to pattern after . . . Hebe Harke is a strong booster of the credit union plan to save, buy and get ahead . . .
Joe Abbott has his headaches
OFFICERS requesting volunteer recall to active duty in the grade of lieutenant must not have reached their 30th birthday. Those being recalled in grades from captain through lieutenant colonel must not have reached their 36th birthday and must have a total of 500 hours flying time with at least 250 hours as first pilot.
All officers applying will submit with their application either a certified copy or a photostat of their air force form 5 or 5a showing tables 1, 2 and 3.
Reserve officers in the Fourth air force area (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada, California and Arizona) may write direct to the commanding general, Fourth air force, Hamilton, California, attention: PRS.
