Young Wilson graduated in three years from Carnegie Institute of Technoloy and promptly went to work for Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co. in 1909 as a student apprentice at 18 cents an hour. Last year General Motors paid him more than a half million dollars. Three years after he joined Westinghouse, he designed the first automobile starting motor made by the company. By 1916 Wilson was in charge of all the automobile electrical equipment engineering for Westinghouse. Wilson switched activities to General Motors in 1919 and his rise was rapid. He started as chief engineer and sales manager of the automobile division of Remy Electric Co., a GM subsidiary. In nine years at 38 he was a GM vice president handling the corporation's industrial relations and business planning activities. He became president of General Motors when his predecessor, William S. Knudsen, left the company to head the U.S. defense and war production effort. Wilson himself was named to the 10-man labor-management commission to convert automobile plants to war production. He also was an adviser to military and governmental agencies and manpower and natural resources. The white-haired, 5 foot 10 executive works and plays hard. Grimshaw nursery of Hayward, Calif., has discovered that the dwarf tree yields yearly over 200 delicious white-fleshed, free-stone peaches. During off season it prolifically grows beautiful, double red flowers. The planting time for this hardy dwarf peach tree begins now (from about Christmas time through April) yet it thrives in any climate, bearing fruit even though the tree is so small that it can fit into a patio tub or extremely small garden. Experiments at the Grimshaw nursery discovered that the yearly yield of peaches is more than enough for the eating and canning needs of a large family. Other "dwarfed" peach trees (peach branches grafted onto other trees) have been grown in America before, but this is the first time an actual dwarf peach tree has been successfully grown in the United States. Gophers Turn From Plants To Cables DAVIS—Pocket gophers—long a problem to gardeners and farmers—have found another way to make trouble. They gnaw through the insulation on buried electric wires and cables, and cause short circuits. Cable gnawing is not for food value. It is done either to move an obstruction, or to wear down the gopher's ever-growing front teeth. The University of California's military and governmental agencies and manpower and natural resources. DAVIS—Pocket gophers—long a problem to gardeners and farmers—have found another way to make trouble. They gnaw through the insulation on buried electric wires and cables, and cause short circuits. Cable gnawing is not for food value. It is done either to move an obstruction, or to wear down the gopher's ever-growing front teeth. The University of California's department of zoology in the College of Agriculture is investigating types of cables damaged by gophers, and those resistant to gopher damage. Walter E. Howard, assistant zoologist, reports that in laboratory tests where gophers are confined to one section of a two-part cage by blocking a passageway with a six-inch length of cable, the rodents penetrated all non and soft metallic kinds of armor. Those made of interlocked galvanized steel; overlapped stainless steel; and aluminum basket weave, however, proved an effective barrier. It was found that ¼ and ½ inch hardware cloth mesh around cables were also effective; gophers cannot gnaw on small wires, although weaker wires of small caliber may be broken by the gopher pulling on them. Howard points out that the laboratory tests do not guarantee what the rodents will do in the field, but industry reports that gophers have damaged the same types of material under field conditions. Poisons and repellents in the insulating material are impractical. They are hazardous to humans, and a gopher is able to gnaw on a cable without taking treated material into its mouth. Though most of the state's Christmas trees come from natural forests, Woodbridge Metropolitan and Rudolf F. Grah, University of California foresters, observe increasing interest in plantation methods and point to some definite advantages of growing the trees on plantations. They note that better quality trees are grown in a shorter time, that trees can be produced closer to market, and that heavy snows do not prevent cutting and transportation. In addition, they say early cutting and long storage are unnecessary, and that trees may be left uncut for a better market. Best location for a Christmas tree plantation, Metcalf and Grah advise, is on land where the desired species have been found in natural forests. When the state of Oklahoma was admitted to the Union in 1907 it had a population in advance of several of the older states.
