CHP Asks Aid in Checking Dec. Traffic Deaths SACRAMENTO—The California Highway Patrol today asked the public's help in a December drive to "actually reduce traffic deaths not just talk about it." Patrol Commissioner Clifford E. Peterson said he hoped any public indifference to the traffic toll would be lessened during the holiday season. "People seem to be more responsive to humanitarian and sentimental appeals this time of year," he said, "and that's what we're banking on." Peterson declared the patrol would do its part in the life-saving program by staging traffic checks, handling out safety literature and stepping up enforcement activity. Last December 322 persons died in traffic accidents throughout the state. "Just a single life saved this year will be worth any extra effort." Peterson said, adding that the toll could be materially reduced if every motorist and pedestrian would accept personal responsibility for his or her own safety. As a positive step for drivers to take, Peterson suggested that they tighten up on their driving habits and obey all traffic laws. "Year after year," he said, "our records show that in more than nine out of ten cases, Californians are being killed and injured in traffic because someone violates a law." INVENTOR—Are you familiar with the career of Leo Fender, the Anaheimmer who became an electronics expert? He is the nation's leading manufacturer of electric guitars and amplifiers who is now building a three-unit factory on the property he acquired from Archibald Edwards. As a kid, Leo got interested in radio. He built his first cat's whisker, crystal set under the direction of H. P. (Horsepower) Hotmes, former Anaheim elementary shop instructor, and since has been working on various kinds of electric gadgets. During the war (1941-45) Fender came up with a record player, but manufacturing concerns shelved it for him. That little experience turned him into a manufacturer in his own rights. And while he has a backlog of orders, he is not a rich man. He is constantly plowing the profits back into the business. What more, he is an outstanding example of what a handicapped individual can do if he makes up his mind to do it. HISTORICAL NOTE — The Anaheim fire department was organized in 1872 with a hook and ladder, buckets and a hand-drawn hose wagon. The total cost of the fire fighting equipment was $500. I was born in La Mirada, Calif., which to this day does not boast a hospital, but may if that $4,500,000 development goes through. Incidentally, the only time I've ever been in a hospital was to see a sick friend, but, with automobiles being what they are there should be more hospital space available. There should be another well staffed hospital in the Anaheim-Fullerton area. FISHERMAN—Herman Schacht, who claimed to be a shirt-tail relative of the German financial wizard, is quite a fisherman.
