County Pioneers in County Leads in Anti-TB Fight, Panel Reveals
Orange county, pioneering a medical-social worker setup for the care of tuebrculosis is leading many other areas throughout the United States in the fight against tuberculosis.
This was brought to light by George Tobias, chairman of the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health association, at a recent round table radio discussion aired over radio station KVOE.
Appearing before the microphone were: Tobias, Dr. Lyman Brewer, chest specialist and surgeon, Eric Smith, president of Burroughs Inc., Los Angeles, a direct mail advertising firm; and Ralph C. Smedley, co-chairman for the Seal sale drive, as moderator.
Tobias said, during the broadcast held to kickoff the county's 46th annual Christmas seal sale drive, that the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health association is leading many other associations throughout the country with its fight to roll back horizons in care for tuberculars not able to receive aid from other sources.
"With a medical-social worker setup, we are doing a pioneering job lacking in many other associations."

BERLIN, N. H. (P)—The third Thanksgiving day baby—a boy—was born yesterday to Mrs. Wilfred McCready.
Tobias said, during the broadcast held to kickoff the county's 46th annual Christmas seal sale drive, that the Orange County Tuberculosis and Health association is leading many other associations throughout the country with its fight to roll back horizons in care for tuberculars not able to receive aid from other sources.
"With a medical-social worker setup, we are doing a pioneering job lacking in many other associations. We are literally a 'no-man's land' in the care of TB patients for whom county and state agencies have no facilities for care," he said.

Pointing out the need or continued funds to keep up the nation wide fight against tuberculosis, Tobias said:
"The sale of Christmas seals is a community wide project. Christmas is not only the time for giving to close relatives and friends, it is the time for doing for our fellow man. And when we buy Christmas seals to stick to every piece of mail we send out between now and Christmas, we are helping in the fight against tuberculosis and helping our fellow man."
Citing the success of last year's Christmas seal drive, Tobias urged for a still greater return to continue the fight against the dread killer.
"Last year we mailed 57,000 envelopes and had a return of approximately $46,000, nearly 20 per cent over the previous year.
"This year we are sending out 75,000 pieces of mail and hope for a return of 55 to 60 thousand dollars," he said.
He told radio listeners that a substantial share of money received goes to the state and national associations for research, public education, equipment, detection equipment and isolation.

“We are also spending funds
for detection in local hospitals by
providing x-ray facilities for incoming patients,” he said.
Urgling toughness in fighting a
tough germ, Dr. Brewer, presented information on the national
scope of tuberculosis. He said
that the annual death rate from
tuberculosis is needless and can
be compared with 2½ U. S. divisions or five Russian divisions.
“Although since 1900 we have
cut down the death rate from
tuberculosis from 200 persons
per 100,000 to 23 persons per

persons who have at one time
or another harbored active TB bacillus.
“Our potential is tremendous.
And only by a continued fight
against the disease are we going
to reach our goal of complete eradication. But this takes mass surveys, new experimentation, detection and isolation,” he said.

Dato Onn bin Jaafar, member for home affairs, called on community leaders to work for the unity and goodwill of the people. Addressing Malayan graduate teachers, he reminded them of the 1946 Chinese-Malay clashes following the surrender of the Japanese. Chinese had attacked the Malays believing that they had facilitated the victory of the Japanese over the British.

MAKING COMERACK
LEGHORN, Italy (UP)—American money is helping this Italian Communist political stronghold recover from its war wounds and resume its role as one of Italy's busiest and most modern harbors.
The biggest shot in the arm for this seaport, the U. S. Fifth army's main supply base during World War II, came in the summer of 1951 when it was chosen as a 'U. S. army's supply base for troops in Austria. The base now provides jobs for 3586 Italians.
