Anaheim Gazette MONDAY, DECEMBER 1, 1922 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Pope’s List of Cardinals Holds Several “Firsts” VATICAN CITY (AP)—Pope Plus, noted as a precedent breaker and maker, appeared today to have largely followed tradition in selecting 24 new cardinals. Eleven are Italians, several from archepiscopal sees frequently headed by a cardinal. Four are apostolic nuncios—traditional candidates for the red hat. The list, however, also has some “firsts.” It included for the first time cardinals from Yugoslavia, Colombia and Ecuador, bringing to 26 the number of nations represented in the college. In the person of Archbishop James Francis McIntyre of Los Angeles it included the first cardinal in the Western U.S., recognition of the tremendous population growth in this part of America. It also includes six cardinals whose average age is 50 years—the largest number of comparatively young men named at one time in many years. The youngest is 46-year-old Giuseppe Siri, archbishop of Genoa. Commenting upon the selections, the Italian press underlined with pleasure the Pope’s apparent determination—at least for the time being—to maintain the Italian ratio in the college at a high level. His inclusion of only four Italians among the 32 cardinals created in his great postwar Consistory of 1946 had led many to speculate on the possibility of the eventual election of the first non-Italian pope since the brief reign of Hadrian VI in 1522. The nomination of 11 Italians brings Italy’s total in the college to 27—the same number it had after the 1946 Consistory. The full membership of the college is 70. Beaming with health, the prime minister spent most of the day in his slippers and lounging robe at 10 Downing st. opening "happy returns" cards and reading cables of well wishers from the four corners of the globe. For the old man—as he's affectionately called—it was a day of complete relaxation and a far cry from some other birthdays in his turbulent career. Reds Make New Radio Attack On Eisenhower AN FRANCISCO (UP)—The Chinese Communist radio today made a most violent attack to date on president-elect Dwight Eisenhower calling him a "bloody-minded monster", and the "bitter foe Asian people." The Peiping broadcast, heard the Associated Press in San Francisco, denounced particular his campaign statement of ending "Asians to fight Asians." It called it a "wicked scheme." Peiping said that among other things, Eisenhower was going to sea "to put the heat" on South Korean President Syngman Rhee accept Japanese and Chinese nationalist troops in the fight against the Communists. The Red broadcast asserted Japanese public opinion would not limit the use of Japanese troops Korea. And it claimed that the anger of Chinese Nationalists surrendering to the Chinese Korean Reds "is far too great" to permit their use. Actually, Eisenhower has denied his trip to Korea as a lie which may aid in finding a means to an honorable place. He has made no mention of the use of Nationalist or Japanese troops. Peiping ended with its usual action of overwhelming defeat the U.S. DOLL IN WRECKAGE—This rag doll lies beside wreckage of wing of Air Force C-54 which crashed near Tacoma, Wash., killing at least 36 persons, eight of whom were children. Wayne Morse DALLAS, Nov. 30. — Vice-president-elect Richard Nixon said today "we don't want and don't need" the vote of Sen. Wayne Morris, who bolted the Republican party in the presidential campaign. Nixon stopped here on route by air to represent GOP President-elect Dwight Eisenhower at tomorrow's inauguration of Rudolfo Ruiz Cortines as new president of Mexico. A reporter asked Nixon what he thought about Morse, Oregon senator who was elected as a Republican but endorsed Democrat Adlai Stevenson in the presidential campaign. In reply, Nixon lashed out at Morse for the latter's charge that Eisenhower cabinet appointments thus far have been reactionary. "It is not a Taft cabinet; it's not a Dewey cabinet," strictly an Eisenhower cabinet," Nixon said. "The cabinet appointments speak for themselves. The appointments were controlled by nobody. The cabinet is a fulfillment of our pledge to name people best fitted for the jobs." Morse, Nixon said, doesn't know what he's talking about. "One day he says one thing, the next day something else. We don't want and don't need his vote." Morse announced yesterday he would vote with Republicans in organizing the new senate, but will maintain his status as an independent by not participating in either Republican or Democratic caucuses. Morse's decision bolsters GOP control over the senate. Republicans previously had 48 seats, Democrats 47, with Morse listed as an independent. Nixon was accompanied by his wife, Patricia.
