Hogs’ Days Numbered in County; If Not by Disease, by Human Crowding
BY GEORGE E. HART
The difficulty in the garbage-fed hog ranches, where the disease known as vesicular exanthema, or VE, is decimating the herds to the point of gradual extinction, appears to be cannibalism.
Health officials say that VE has been traced particularly to the pork scraps in garbage. When the hog eats his own kind, it’s not good.
But it is not possible, at least not practical, to sift the pork scraps out of large quantities of garbage. So it is either pasteurize the garbage, by cooking it, or quill trying to raise hogs on garbage.
It is said to be questionable whether cooking the garbage would be feasible, economically, and, in this area, it doesn’t seem economically feasible to feed hogs grain instead of garbage. At least, very little if it is done commercially.
So it looks like goodbye hogs.
Perhaps the march of population into Orange county would force the hog ranches out before long in any event. If it can push the orange groves back the way it is doing, it’s liable to crowd the hogs aside.
Well, if Orange county agriculture, fourth in the nation in value of products, is some day to be swarmed under by masses of humanity, it will have, in its day, gone up and down the full scale of contrasts.
For instance, it is a far cry back to the days of the county’s birth, when ranchers like Henry West of McPherson were battling nature and the soil with crude implements and a lot of ingenuity and fortitude.
Henry West, father of Walter West, president of the Santa Ana Valley irrigation Co., and Clarence West, county building department county, our favorite welfare agency, is building a new store and plant in Norwalk, to serve the southeastern Los Angeles county area, including Whittier, Downey and Artesia as well as Norwalk.
That means expansion of employment and rehabilitation for the physically handicapped, and disabled war veterans, and more savings to the taxpayers in relief costs. Goodwill Industries paid more than $100,000 in wages to these employees in it Orange county workshops last year.
Santa Ana Bank To Build Branch
Construction of a branch bank near 17th and Main sts., Santa Ana, to cost nearly $250,000, aside from its furnishings, has been announced by the First National Bank in Santa Ana.
Property of Dr. and Mrs. S. Theron Johnston at 1520 N. Main, and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Cole, 1602 N. Main st., now occupied by the medical offices of Dr. Johnston and dental offices of Dr. Russell Langenbeck, and the Cole residence, has been acquired at a coast of approximately $100,000.
The new bank will be situated on a site having 210 feet of frontage on Main st. extending through Sycamore st. Present plans, not yet complete, call for a building measuring 60 feet by 110 feet. The remainder of the property will be a paved parking area.
Commercial National Bank of Santa Ana some months ago established a branch bank on S. Main st.

Joint Fullerton-Anaheim Toaster Club Meet Set
With Lewis Boys, vice president presiding, Toastmasters club or Anaheim last night planned joint meeting for next week with the Hillcrest club. Toastmaster of Fullerton. Both clubs will contribute to the program.
Louis Taylor opened last night regular meeting with the invocation and Bill Chambers conducted a Table Topic program on the subject of “Floods, Control, and Hazards.”
Toastmaster of the Evening Hank Allen introduced the four speakers, Ken Hueller on “The Miracle of Modern Science”, James Lepper who gave his initial Toastmaster
For instance, it is a far cry back to the days of the county's birth, when ranchers like Henry West of McPherson were battling nature and the soil with crude implements and a lot of ingenuity and fortitude.
Henry West, father of Walter West, president of the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation Co., and Clarence West, county building department official, once dug a well 150 feet deep with a shovel, a bucket, a rope and a mule.
But that wasn't all. From 1890 to 1892 he operated a treadmill with two-bull power, to cut ensilage.
The two bulls got to know their job very well and seemed to like it. They would step up into their positions on the treadmill and plot along for hours just as though they were going somewhere. They worked a three-hour shift in the forenpon and four hours in the afternoon.
That was Orange county agriculture in its infancy. What will be its old age? It could be dehydration, if we don't look out.
