Danson IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY KUCHEL 75 Years Ago Company E departed on Saturday for a 40 days' encampment at Long Beach. Word comes from the boys that they are enjoying themselves and that the camp is one of the most successful ever held by the regiment. The Four-Fours club were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wallop on Thursday evening. After a 7 o'clock dinner at a local cafe the guests enjoyed the usual game of whist at the Wallop home. Guests of the evening were Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Havener and Mr. and Mrs. L. J. Sheridan who substituted for absent members. 50 Years Ago Mr. F. A. Korn and Miss Marle Horstman, who have been touring Europe for some months, have returned to San Francisco and are expected to arrive here in a few days. Al Smith and family returned on Friday afternoon from a fort-night's sojourn at Newport Beach. 25 Years Ago Mr. and Mrs. Henry Strodthoff of Los Angeles sustained severe injuries in an automobile accident while returning from a visit to Yellowstone park. They had reached a point on the highway leading into Olympia, Wash., when they were run into by another car. The road was slippery owing to heavy rains, and their Cadillac was overturned on the side of the thoroughfare. Mrs. Strodthoff was quite severely injured was taken to a hospital in Olympia. Mr. Strodthoff sustained minor bruises. The car was wrecked. Arthur and Harold Mann, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Chas Mann, left some days ago for Stanford to resume their studies. Anaheim Gazette by JOHN S. NEUBAUER WEATHERWISE — A torrential rain accompanied by 70-mile-an-hour gales swept Oranco Saturday. More than an inch of rain was dumped on Anaheim. Damage was extensive along the coast-al area where tornadoes made night's sojourn at Newport Beach. George Logan, 30, of Long Beach, was given six months in jail with three years' probation, when he pleaded guilty to the auto death of Reuben Pierce, also of Long Beach... In Las Vegas Beulah Overell Cannon was granted a divorce. She and George (Bud) Collum were the defendants in Oranco's most publicized and lengthy murder trials in 1947. KOREAN HERO—Maj. Harold Elland, Costa Mesa, previously reported as missing, has been reported killed in action by the defense department. He was a member of a night fighter squadron. Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER WEATHERWISE — A torrential rain accompanied by 70-mile-an-hour gales swept Oranco Saturday. More than an inch of rain was dumped on Anaheim. Damage was extensive along the coastal area where tornado-like winds uprooted trees and leveled a warehouse on the Irvine ranch. With most of the Carbon canyon watershed dry the rain soaked in and did not flood Anaheim as is customary during such a storm. NEWSBRIEFs—Another major industry—probably the largest in Oranco—was indicated for Anaheim when Cliff Wolf, agent for the Ross Campbell (Realty) Co., took option to buy the 90-acre plot belonging to Daniel Williams, Ray Clark and John Williams. Dr. Edward Lee Russell disclosed that refuse-feeding hog ranches have been infected with the dreaded vesicular exanthema. This is of vital importance as it may mean an end to the hog farms and create a garbage disposal problem to the respective cities of the county. ADD ANOTHER — Thomas F. Beardsley, 33-year-old marine master sergeant, was killed instantly when his car smashed into a Newport avenue power pole near Santa Ana. He was the 48th fatality of the year. COURTOPIX — William Rupp, Jr., 18-year-old convicted sex slayer of 15-year-old baby sitter, Ruby Ann Payne, was in court today for a sanity hearing which will determine whether he is to die in the gas chamber or be confined to a mental institution. The hearing before the same jury that found him guilty of first degree murder probably will last a week. TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE 10:00 P.M.
