IN THE DAYS OF LONG AGO From the Files of Anaheim Gazette By MRS. HENRY EUCHEL 75 Years Ago November 1827 The Board of town trustees met in regular session yesterday afternoon. Assessor Blanken turned over the assessment roll. The Marshal was instructed to make several alterations and improvements on the jail. The Board adjourned for two weeks, when it will meet as a Board of Equalization. See tax notice in our advertising columns. 50 Years Ago November 1903 On Sunday next, the corner stone of the new Catholic church will be laid with appropriate ceremonies by Bishop Montgomery. The services will consist of solemn High Mass, followed by a procession to the site of the new church when the cornerstone will be laid. The usual documents will be placed therein, as well as copies of newspapers and other articles commemoration of the occasion. The bishop will later deliver a sermon, taking for his topic a subject appropriate to the time and place. The new church will be among the handsomest edifices of its kind in Southern California, constructed of brick veneer, and finished in the latest and most approved style of architecture. Bishop Montgomery has many friends in Orange county and doubtless the laying of the corner-stone of the new church will be made the occasion of a distinguished gathering in his honor. November 1927 If attempt was made to observe the ordinances on the books of the county, some of which were passed in early days of the automobile, and are still in force; traffic conditions on the highways would be so congested that most motorists would stay off roads. District Attorney Z.B.West intends to go through the 264 county ordinances, cull out the deadwood, codify and print laws in convenient form. One of the laws passed in 1907 provides that cars shall go no faster than four miles per hour in traversing any county bridge, and the chugging old cars were required to slow down when approaching a horse whether he was attached to a buggy, wagon or simply being led by a rope. If his driver raised his handthe motorist was required to stop.And if the horse still showed signs of displeasure at the noise of the engineits wheezing had to be silenced while they animalwas passing. Grand Master Visits Cynress Site Approved For Exchange Grand Master Visits Cypress 10OF Lodge The IOOF met at Cypress school Monday to entertain Alvin Beach, grand master of the California grand lodge and his staff with Harry Mansperger of Santa Ana officiating. He was assisted by Henry Mang of Anahiem and a company of uniformed Canton members from town close by Gerald (Neb) Milbourn, noble grand, and John D. Thomas, vice-grand, presided. Grandmaster Beach told of historic events in California odd Fellow history dating back one hundred years when the order gave service to the residents of Sacramento during a plague. Robert J. Rossberg, Anaheim manager of the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., said the lot, 150 feet on Orange and 177 feet on Hansen would be purchased if the permit was granted.
