Benjamin Franklin Announces Plans For Year
"Education is the Family's Business" will be the subject for the Benjamin Franklin PTA general meeting to be held Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fremont cafeteria.
The meeting is designated as a "teachers' panel" and will be conducted by extra curriculum teachers; Ada Wilcox, physical education; Lucia Upp, art; Harriet Shadewald, music; Carl Berneker, physical education; Ted Bourne, instrumental and Elizabeth Mann, school nurse.
Plans for this meeting were announced by Mrs. Wayne Held, program chairman, when the board met Monday, Oct. 3 at the home of Mrs. Floyd Stockwell, Mrs. S. L. Keith, presiding.
Reports given by the chairmen were budget and finance, Mrs. Claire Van Hoorebeke; conservation and thrift, Mrs. Greg Beale; Girl Scout, Mrs. James Dilly; council motion picture chairman, Mrs. Harry Dugdale.
Mrs. Arthur Korn, home and family life chairman, gave a brief resume of the conference held at the Anaheim union high school.
Final count of the membership drive shows a total of 521 members, it was announced. Posters for this drive were made by the fifth and sixth grades and ribbons will be presented as awards for the best posters.

Mrs. Fred Krastel presided over Thomas Jefferson P-TA executive board meeting on Monday.
A motion was carried that will give a fluorescent pencil to all children getting a subscription to either, or both, National and California Parent-Teachers magazines.
It was announced that the Mother-singers will be in Cypress on the fourth Tuesday and in Anaheim on the second Tuesday.
P-TA insurance was explained. District meeting will be held in Buena Park on Nov. 20. Plans were made for Salvation Army Doll dresses and broken toys for the last week in November. The association will have a penny march for the nursery at each meeting. Next regular meeting will be held Nov. 12 at 2:30 p.m. in the school cafetorium. Dr. Cyril Smith will speak on Dental Health and Nutrition for the Whole Family. Movies will be shown on dental health for children and parents.

Besides blowing unwelcome in the house, the hot Santa wind stripped the few remain leaves from persimmon trees, leave the golden fern to ripen in tary splendor.

FRUIT BLEND
The hard "green" persimmon will pucker the mouth in no time By green, we do not refer to color but to its state of ripeness A persimmon is at its brow when it reaches the soft, almost mushy stage. Well worth us from a nutritional standpoint, since it contains nearly as much vitamin C as an orange of same size. But weight watchers Beware. Wouldn't you know that its calorie count is way up thru with cake!
Luckily the persimmon bleed well with other fruits now in season. If you can manage to pick it and cut it in wedges, combine it with orange and grapefruit sations in a sherbet glass as an appetizer. Fill the glass with fresh fruit juices or pineapple juice if you prefer.
As a salad ingredient, arran persimmon wedges pinwheel starch on a crisp lettuce leaf with allate slices of avocado and grapefruit juice.
Britt Gray Wins Toastmaster Cup
Toastmaster of the evening, Ed Wright, conducted a program of four official and one unofficial speakers Monday night at Anaheim Toastmasters club regular meeting. Introducing an impromptu note to the proceedings, Toastmaster Wright called on Dick Herman for an extemporaneous talk on "Why I Wear a Butch."
The program speakers were Paul Von Kileben who talked on "How to Become an Interior Decorator in One Easy Lesson," Britt Gray, who used the subject, "One Man's Fear is Another Man's Salvation," Leroy Ater, who gave a brief "History of Early American Communism," and Chauncey Stillson, whose speech was entitled, "A Grateful Heart."
Evaluation of the speakers was by Hank Allen, Bill Chambers, Louis Taylor and Bob Allen. Timekeeping was by Walter Knott.
Louis Taylor opened the meeting with an Invocation, and President Guy Tester, after a short business session, introduced table topic master, Joe Ersek, who used the subject of "Gullibility in the Newspapers." The members were called upon to speak extemporaneously on a newspaper advertisement, furnished to them by Toastmaster Ersek.
The meeting was held in Lum's Restaurant across from La Palma park at the usual 6:30 to 8:30 time. Announcement was made of a joint meeting with a Fullerton chapter for Nov. 24.
The weekly cup for best speech of the evening was voted to Britt Gray.
Inspector Calls First Presentation For Players
To mark the opening of their 33rd year as an organization the Santa Ana Community Players will present J. B. Priestley's popular mystery melodrama, "An Inspector Calls" opening Nov. 13 in the auditorium of the Santa Ana Ebell clubhouse and extending through Nov. 14 and 15 with curtain time at 8:30 p.m.
Again to give her capable direction to the play will be Joanne Hockaday Carden of Santa Ana who will be remembered for her direction of last year's Community Players' presentation of "Life With Mother." Assisting Mrs. Carden with the technical direction of the play will be her husband, William F. Carden, who will also be seen portraying an important role in the production.
The selected cast to present this first in the season's series of plays will include William Daniel of Costa Mesa as the inspector; William F. Carden of Santa Ana, Mr. Birling; Alda Lambert of Santa Ana, Mrs. Birling; Evelyn Gordon of Santa Ana, Shella; William Beeman of Costa Mesa, Gerald; William Hertzog of Laguna Beach, Eric; and Babs Littleford of Santa Ana, Edna.
Tickets may be obtained from the Santa Ana Book store at KI 2-0230 for all performances.
Reports Given At Women's Relief Corps Meeting
A. B. Paul Women's Relief corps meeting was held yesterday at IOOF hall with 23 members and officers present.
Highlight of the meeting was the application for a new membership, bringing the enrollment to 84. Announcement was made of help needed by veterans' hospitals and Red Cross. There are sewing projects at city hall and several volunteers are needed for each. Revised bylaws were adopted.
A handmade stole was donated and made by Leona Hull, president, with proceeds to go toward WRC purchase of a wheel chair for crippled children's home. An interesting letter was read from member, Mable Ives, who is touring Canada.

County Children To Benefit from Christmas Party
The annual archbishop's Christmas party for children, sponsored by his excellency, the most R.J. Francis A. McIntyre, D.J. archbishop of Los Angeles, will hold from 3 to 5 p.m., Sunday Dec. 4, in the exquisite embassal room of the Ambassador hotel.
Each year, the archbishop's Christmas party is distinctive, because of its threefold purpose.
First, it provides a real Christmas party for scores of orphaned with Santa Claus, a huge, gay tree and all the trimmings. Second, the sight gives warmth and glamour of heart to all adult patrons and patronesses privileged to attend.
Nazarene Juniors Hallowe'en Party
The junior department of the Church of the Nazarene held its annual Hallowe'en party and first prize for the girls' costume went to Nina Sue Pitts and second to Barbara Krell. For the boys' first prize went to Freddie Stearns and second, Danny Christopherson.
Teachers who sponsored the party and served sandwiches, cookies and punch were Mrs. Walter Allen, supervisor, and Mmes. Melvin Callahan, J. A. McCoy, Stanley Martin, N. Chapman and J. T. Thrower.
Welsch Society Schedules Dinner
The Welsh American society of California will sponsor a dinner at the Pathfinders club on Santa Fe St., Compton, Saturday night, Nov. 15.
The society is composed of people of Welsh birth, descent or marriage and meets the third Saturday of each month in Compton hall. Mrs. Winne Winshall of Los Angeles is president and W. R. Lewis of Long Beach is vice president.
The dinner will be served from 6:30 to 8 p.m., with Welsh faggots, peas and roast beef on the menu, a bazaar and musical will follow.

Bronze Palm Given In Scout Ceremony
Albert Pefley, son of the C. R. Pefleys, Olive, and his scout master, Major Robert Hadden received their bronze palm, which is the next degree above an Eagle Scout, at a recent meeting of the Saloma Beach Boy Scout troop. The presentation was made by the field executive from the San Diego area council, B.S.A., Ernest Cassados. Salona Beach is in the San Luis Rey district, B. S. A., under the San Diego council.
Albert is a sophomore at San Diego union high school at Encinitas this year and his father, well known for his work in scouting in Orange county, is a committee man for the troop. Until recently Mrs. Pefley has been a Den Mother of Cub Scout troop No. 53, sponsored by the Orange Elks lodge.
Karen Jennings' Birthday Observed
Mrs. Leonard Jennings entered in her Orange ave. home Sunday afternoon for her daughter, Karen, who was seven years old.
Strawberry ice cream and cakes were enjoyed by the group, after which Karen played "Home on the Range," "Silent Night" and "Old Folks at Home" accompanied by Sharon White on the piano.
Others present were from Savanna school Patricia Yonts, Karel Conk, Gay Mackay, Glenda Williams and Bobby Arnette.

½ cup sugar
½ cup persimmon pulp
¼ cup sweet milk
½ teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour, sifted
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon soda
1 cup raisins
½ cup chopped nuts
Cream fat and sugar; stir in perssimmon pulp and vanilla. Sift dry
ingredients together and add to
the mixture with alternate portions of milk. Add nuts and raisins.
Steam in a well oiled covered mold, 1½ quart capacity. (2 lb.
coffee can) for 1½ hours, or cover
closely and set in a pan of water.
Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 1½ hours. Serve warm with hard sauce or whipped cream.
Persimmon Cookies
1 cup sugar
½ cup shortening
1 egg
1 cup persimmon pulp
1 cup chopped walnuts
¾ cup raisins
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon soda
1 teaspoon of baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon cloves
½ teaspoon cinnamon
This is a prize winning recipe developed by Mrs. Claude Slack of Anaheim. She says to creme sugar and shortening until fluffy. Beat in the egg. Add sieved persimmon pulp, nuts and raisins. Sift dry ingredients and blend well with creamed mixture. Drop by teaspoons onto a greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Makes five dozen small cookies.
