The club presented the award as an 83rd birthday gift. (Photo by Leroy Ater) Toasters Honor Chauncy Stillson At Special Birthday Celebration Chauncy J. Stillson, 83, this week received what is believed to be the first life membership in Toastmasters club bestowed by an masters No. 2. Following the regular meeting a decorated birthday cake made by Mrs. Ed Wright and bearing the Toasters Honor Chauncy Stillson At Special Birthday Celebration Chauncy J. Stillson, 83, this week received what is believed to be the first life membership in Toastmasters club bestowed by an individual club on a regular member. The honor came as a part of a surprise birthday celebration honoring Stillson after this week's dinner meeting in Lum's restaurant. Toastmasters International officers are presented life memberships by that organization when retiring from office, but so far as is known individual groups have never bestowed the honor of any non-officer, member, according to Guy Tester, president of the Anaheim Toastmaster. Elton R. McCoy Named Advisor to Bank of America Elton R. McCoy, prominent local businessman, has been appointed to the advisory board of Anaheim branch of Bank of America. It was announced today by O. E. Hanson, manager. McCov is an auto dealer, orchardist and officer of Melrose Abbey Memorial park, who is active in local community and civic enterprises. He is director of the chamber of commerce and a member of several southland Masonic bodies. Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER A soft answer turneth away wrath.—Prov. 15:1. LOCAL ANGLES—Don Derr is having his troubles getting an Anaheim industrial basketball league organized. Seems like four or five industrialists are interested. Following the regular meeting a decorated birthday cake made by Mrs. Ed Wright and bearing the numeral 83 outlined in candles, was presented Stillson. Paul V. Klieben presented the life membership certificate and R. J. Allen presented gifts from the members, which included a complete outfit of clothing. A note of humor accompanying the gift was the fact that Stillson's clothing was missing when time came for his discharge from the hospital after a recent illness. Surprise guests at the party were the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Kevorkian. The pastor heads Calvary First Baptist church of which Stillson is an active lay worker. Tester presided over the meeting which preceded the party, and Lyle Wallace was toastmaster. Marcus Gartner won the weekly trophy award with his talk on "Stability." Other speakers and their topics were H. J. Allen, "What's Cooking;" George McKool, "A Leader of Mei." William Chambers, "Fences." Table topic chairman was Ray Damerell. Evaluators were Dick Herrmann, Frank Maguire, Ralph Alexander and Stillson. Timekeeper was R. H. Allen and invocation was given by L. M. Pickel. A new member welcomed was James M. Lepper and guests were Al McCauley and Dr. Frederick Rusch. Photos of the birthday gathering were taken by Leroy Ater. Anaheim scene for those gigantic Washingtonian palms for La Palma park... William Ballman is one of Anaheim's outstanding enthusiasts. He's a real American booster... Gene Richards incidentally, is learning the appliance game from the repairman's viewpoint... Looks like Judge John Shea will have a first class courthouse when the Fullerton-Anaheim court convenes. C. R. Young and Sons are coming right along with the beautiful little courthouse across the street from La Palma park. VIGNETTE—Floyd McCracken the former Anaheim newspaperman who is now chief editorial writer for the Cordova Press. LOCAL ANGLES—Don Derr is having his troubles getting an Anaheim industrial basketball league organized. Seems like four or five industrialists are interested but it is difficult to get the league rounded out... Jim Wright who did such an outstanding summer softball job for the recreation people tells us that this year's Anaheim City Basketball League team will be the best ever... Incidentally, Wright's Orange county league cage team is looking for a championship this winter. He has a first-class quintet including Hugh Faulkner one of the best cagers ever developed locally... Joe Bruce, Roer Pannier and Windy Range are also playing with the Anaheimers. Pannier is a ball of fire—the spark-plug of the organization... Del Walker reminds Anaheim sport-fans of the Schoolmasters' case team of not so long ago when Dick Glover was the scoring ace. Glover used to see if he could outscore his teammate, Clarence Bishop, the then Valencia hi mentor. Usually he did that, too. READY — Anaheim is getting ready for a big population increase. On Oct. 32nd, Anaheim will (or should) be a town of 100,000 people who will witness the Hallowe'en festivities. NUGGETS — Mickey Gregg is quite a sportsman. He's a hunting and fishing enthusiast. But his cocker spaniel is no help on duck hunting expeditions. He chews up the cartridges... Jack Dutton is doing a major landscape job on his new Orangethorpe estates. Reminds old timers how Rudy Boyden scouted over the dentally, is learning the appliance game from the repairman's viewpoint... Looks like Judge John Shea will have a first class court-house when the Fullerton-Anaheim court convenes. C. R. Young and Sons are coming right along with the beautiful little courthouse across the street from La Palma park. VIGNETTE—Floyd McCracken the former Anaheim newspaperman who is now chief editorial writer for the Copley newspapers in San Diego, was quite a whodon-it writer here in Anaheim... Mac used to hammer out true desational cases it has of recent tective yarns based on local criminal cases... In his day, however, Orange county did not produce the sensational cases it has of recent years. Mac would have had a lot of material to write-up... Such material would provide good material for would-be writers... The sensationalism of the William Rupp case; together with the Bridgford Packing Co. hijacking case and the Roy Broughton case would have furnished ready-made material for any magazine writer. Furthermore, such material would have found a ready market... McCracken proved conclusively that a small town newspaperman can win national fame for his writing through his editorials in national magazines. NOTES—Perry Maynard, former newspaperman, still dabbles with his writing machine, though he is now a superior court clerk. Perry gave a lot of Orange county's best reporters their basic (newspaper) training". Johnny Vuksonovich isn't busy enough just by doing a day's work, so he plays basketball at night... Herman Schacht is unhappy. He wants the Hallowe'en parade to be routed in front of his house. NITECAPSULE—They tell you nothing is impossible; but that isn't so.
