California Outdoors

(Associated Press Outdoors Editor)
Despite the bluebird weather which accompanied the opening of duck season, the subsoil over the opening weekend in northern and central California generally was good.
As a rule the established clubs had good to excellent shooting.
Friday afternoon every one apparently got birds and in most places limited out. Such places as the Los Banon club area, northwest of the Los Banos refuge and the old established clubs in the Spinn marshes like the Volanil and Sprig clubs limited out on sock sprigs. Excellent shooting was also enjoyed by the club shooters in the Willows area, but Saturday and Sunday, the unattached shooting had rough going there.
Jean Mendribil and Ray Connolly, partners in the Mission Rod and Gun shop in San Francisco, shot at Los Banos, and reported that all the clubs in that area limited, nearly all on Sprig.
In southern Alameda county, where Bill McCall, former president of the Associated Sportsmen, and a host of other east bay shooters perform, limits were general, but Sprig were not as plentiful there and the bags included a majority of Spoonies, with some Sprig and Bluebills sprinkled in.
The extensive feeding which has been necessitated on the Griglainto valley refuges in the rice area was created with showing up the shooting by holding birds which would otherwise have been out working for a living. Feeding will stop in the Sacramento refuges as soon as the crops are in and the shoot-ing is expected to improve materially in the area then, probably after Nov. 13.
Tom Maloney, manager of the Willow creek gun clubs, reports that less dead and sick birds are being seen and that the botulism epidemic apparently has passed its peak in that area. However, there are still some dead and sick birds all over the duck area, and hunters are warned not to pick up birds which they are not sure they knocked out of the air.
Shooters who went into the Tule lake area had wonderful shooting Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, which was crisp and foggy. Later Saturday and Sunday the bluebird weather returned and the birds sat still on the refuges.
Very few birds have migrated south from Tulelake and lower Klamath refuges since Oct. 10 and there now are at least 3,500,000 ducks and geese on the refuges, managers there report. The snow goose population has increased considerably in the past two weeks.
The state's Grizzly island public shooting area, both the pay area with blinds and the free area, enjoyed its best opening yet. The blind area was filled to capacity all three days and averaged 4.46 birds per hunter for the three days. On the free area a total of 1556 hunters bagged 4987 birds in the three days, for an average of 3.35 birds per hunter.
The hunting accidents which accompanied the opening weekend in the Soison marshes were the first in that area in almost 18 years, and should be a warning to all hunters that the watchword for safe hunting still is extreme care.
All the accidents, in which one man was killed and a man and a boy wounded, could have been
Cal Dropped to 11th Place in AP Grid Ratings
NEW YORK (P)—Mighty Michigan State, with three complete backfields and a 35-point-a-game offense, continues to roll along as the No. 1 team in the land.
For the third straight week, Coach Biggle Munn’s monsters have been voted best in the land by 121 sportswriters and broadcasters in the Associated Press poll. Except for the second week of the poll when Wisconsin held away briefly, Michigan State has dominated the poll ever since the pre-season voting.
Saturday’s 34-7 trumping of previously undefeated Penn State brought the Spartans 38 first place votes and a total of 1042 points on a basis of 10 for first, nine for second and so on down the line.
Despite Michigan State’s impressive game, second place Maryland crept a little closer on the strength of its 36-4 win over Louisiana State. The Terrapins, who trailed Michigan State by 50 votes last week, cut the margin to 26 as they piled up 32 first place votes and 1016 points.
Oklahoma, even more potent offensively than Michigan State with an average of 42 points a game, also closed some ground but stayed in third place with 29 first place votes and 850 points.
Behind the Big Three were Georgia Tech, Southern California, Duke and UCLA, all closely bunched, with three newcomers to the top 10 filling the last three places—Purdue, Kansas and Villanova.
Georgia Tech moved up one place after bopping Vanderbilt, 30-6, while USC jumped two places thanks to the 10-0 upset of California, last week’s No. 4 team. The defeat knocked California down to 11th.
The leaders first place vote is in the three days, for an average of 3.35 birds per hunter.
The hunting accidents which accompanied the opening weekend in the Suisun marshes were the first in that area in almost 15 years, and should be a warning to all hunters that the watchword for safe hunting still is extreme care.
All the accidents, in which one man was killed and a man and a boy wounded, could have been avoided if proper precautions had been taken. Remember that a shotgun is far more deadly than a rifle or a pistol at short range.
Anaheim Drubbed By Fullerton Court Team
Anaheim took a nine to nothing drubbing from the Fullerton No. 2 Mid-Cities B League tennis team as the league-leading Indians took complete charge of the situation on the City park courts yesterday in the regular bi-weekly winter series. The one-sided win put the Fullerton team way out in front in the five team race. Anaheim entertains Santa Ana on the local courts on Nov. 9, with the final match again being played at Anaheim against the Fullerton No. 1 aggregation, according to Larry Harvill, Anaheim captain.
Results of yesterday’s matches with Fullerton plays listed first, were: Eldon Ford defeated Floyd Baker 6-3, 6-3; Len Andrews defeated Larry Harvill 6-2, 6-0; Joe Crutcher defeated Dick Hanson 6-1, 6-1; Bob O’Hanesian defeated Bob Simon 6-1, 6-2; and Rich O’Hanesian defeated Mike Bouck 6-1, 8-6. Pappy Shudders Over Game with UCLA; Has No Excuse for Loss
SAN FRANCISCO — Coach Lynn Pappy Waldorf says—almost shuddering—that the UCLA defense his California Bears face Saturday may be tighter than the southern California defense which but out his club last week.
Waldorf told the football writers' meeting yesterday he had no excuse for California's 16-0 loss because USC had "the best defensive unit I've ever watched."
The outcome raised the Trojan from No. 7 to No. 5 in the national Associated Press weekly poll. California slid from fourth to 11th. "Offensively, we did not have a good day," Waldorf said. "But at least 80 per cent of that was due to the great USC defense. We had days all set up to go all the way several times, but one of those defenders always filtered in."
Of this week's UCLA game at Berkeley, Waldorf said: "We're in deep water." "UCLA's defensive team is as good, maybe better than USC's. In Donn Moomaw, they have as good a linebacker as there is in the country. Seput 'Eggs' Manske informs me that Paul Cameron is the best tailback he has seen in 15 years of scouting."
"The fact that UCLA has won six of its games with Cameron delined most of the time is a bête to the team's strength." Waldorf said he expects UCLA run up three or four touchdowns and only hopes California is able score more.
Vic Kelley, UCLA publicity man, said UCLA Coach Henry Red" Sanders considers his club the best, defensively, he has ever coached.
The Bruins rose from eighth to seventh in the AP poll, after dumping Wisconsin, 20-7.
Kelley said Sanders feels Waldorf's "fine coached California teams is the principal reason why Pacific Coast football has shown marked improvement. It has made the other teams build up strength to keep apace."
Chuck Taylor said his Stanford Indians "will have to play a top game" to defeat San Jose State this weekend. "San Jose's Lynn Aplanalp is as good a passer as Washington's Don Heinrich."
With Heinrich leading the attack, Washington surprised Stanford 27-14. "Heinrich turned in a masterful job against us," Taylor said. "His field generalship and our fumbles cost us the game."
San Jose State Coach Bob Bronzan expressed optimism over the meeting with Stanford.
"Lynn Aplanalp netted 252 yards against that team last season and is passing better this year," Bronzan declared. "I think we can solve Stanford's seven-man defensive box... I think this is the best opportunity we have had to beat Stanford."
Coach Dick Gallagher lavishly praised Don Ringe and Pete Hester, two Idaho tackles he said gave his Santa Clara Broncs trouble Friday night. The Broncs won 9-7.
Billy Gil, star Santa Clara half-back out with injuries for three games, is expected to be ready for Saturday's game against Hardin-Simmons at Lodi.

free enterprise” has been hard at work in the electric industry!
IN RECENT YEARS a belief has developed in some quarters that if there’s a big job to do. “only government can do it.” And yet, even while that belief has been growing, America’s business-managed electric companies have been building new facilities at a record rate; actually more than doubling their production of electricity since the end of the war, to keep up with demands for electric service. They’ve done it without subsidies, delays or added expense to taxpayers, too. Which would indicate that “free enterprise” isn’t just a high-sounding phrase, but a mighty fine way of getting jobs done—including big ones!
Edison electricity is your best buy—you can depend on it!”
