Broughton Abandons Inspection
Young Killer Will Begin Serving His Sentence Monday at Chino Prison
Roy Clifford Broughton, 18-year-old Santa Ana taxicab slayer, today suddenly abandoned his insanity defense and was immediately sentenced to life imprisonment for first-degree murder, by Superior Judge Raymond Thompson, in Santa Ana.
Judge Thompson, a few minutes earlier, had determined the killing of Richard Grimaley, 25, Los Angeles taxi driver, slain by Broughton on a Santa Ana street on the night of last March 7, to be first degree murder.
Because he was only 17 years old at the time of the crime, Broughton was not subject to the death penalty under California law.
The court, which determined the degree of the crime from evidence presented to the court yesterday by Deputy District Attorney Robert Kneeland, granted a stay of execution of sentence until next Monday, because Broughton’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Broughton, of St. Louis, Mo., had come here to be with their son. The young man Marine will be taken to Chino to begin serving his sentence.
High emotion followed the sentencing of the youth, who was brought back from Pearl Harbor to face prosecution.
Withdrawal of the insanity plea was made at the request of Broughton himself, his attorney, Sidney Cherniss, of Los Angeles, disclosed afterward. Cherniss, himself, considers that Broughton is mentally unbalanced, he said, citing the youth’s outburst at the photographer as an example. He had medical evidence ready to present in court to support the insanity plea. Cherniss said, but Broughton insisted on dropping the defense and was supported in his wish by his parents.
Two court-appointed psychiatrists who examined Broughton, had reported to the court that in their opinion Broughton is legally sane.

dence presented to the court yesterday by Deputy District Attorney Robert Kneeland, granted a stay of execution of sentence until next Monday, because Broughton's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Broughton, of St. Louis, Mo., had come here to be with their son. The young on Marine will be taken to Chino to begin serving his sentence.
High emotion followed the sentencing of the youth, who was brought back from Pearl Harbor to face prosecution. His parents burst into weeping, and Grimsley's mother, Mrs. Edith Grimsley of Los Angeles, mingled her tears with theirs. The young widow, Mrs. Nola Grimsley, 19, who testified yesterday, was not present when the hearing came to its unexpected conclusion.
Young Broughton, himself, was in different mood. As he was being taken back to the county jail by Deputy Sheriff Jack Baker, he attacked a newspaper photographer who had just taken his picture. The photographer, Felix Paegel, of the Los Angeles Examiner, was adjusting his camera after the "shot" when Broughton rushed at him, and kicked the camera. He then challenged Paegel to fight, but was restrained by Baker, Paegel begged the officer to turn Broughton loose.
Evidence presented to the court yesterday tended to show robbery as a motive of the crime, which would make it first degree murder. Finding of Grimsley's empty wallet on a street a half-mile from the murder scene, was cited in support of the charge. Broughton, who had earlier refused to testify, then took the stand to tell the court that at the time of the killing he had approximately $15 in

'Quiet,' She Screamed Silently
Summoned by reports that a family quarrel was causing disturbance at 820 W. Sixth St., Santa Ana, recently, police observed a violent argument was under way, but listened in vain for the noise. Finally they understood.
Both husband and wife were deaf mutes.
They answered police questions by writing notes. Philip, the husband, scribbled slightly when asked what was wrong.
"She won't be quiet," he wrote, referring to his wife, Anna.
Anna scowled and wrote her piece. "He's a loud mouth," she retorted.
It developed that Philip's accusation against Anna didn't mean conversation. She had slammed the door hard.
Police backed out of the house on tip toe.

Ballot Talk by Judge Gardner Set
Judge Robert Gardner will be at the bungalow of the Evangelical United Brethren church tomorrow evening at 7 o'clock to give information on the 24 propositions appearing on the ballot. A most cordial invitation is extended to everyone.
Jury Deliberating on Fate of Four Defendants in Bridgford Robbery
Fate of the four defendants charged with grand theft in the $17,000 Bridgford meat robbery in Anaheim last Dec. 9, was placed in the hands of the jury at 9:55 a.m. today in Superior Judge Robert Gardner's court in Santa Ana.
Court attaches expected a rather prolonged deliberation by the jury in view of the complicated character of the robbery case and the cross interests of the various defendants on trial.
Richard J. McGovern, Compton taxi driver, is accused of actual participation in the raid upon the Bridgford Packing Co. plant. McGovern denies any knowledge of the raid.
Irving Schulman, Los Angeles cafe man, is charged with guilty knowledge of the theft and associations with it by making arrangements for sale of the meat to the Warner Provision Co., Pasadena. Schulman declares that he was unaware the meat would be stolen and had made the contact innocently.
Jack Goldberg and Morris Goldstein, partners in the Warner plant, declare they did not know the meat was stolen until it arrived and they noted that it lacked government inspection stamps. They were then forced to take it at the point of a gun held by Roy Wiltsse, leader of the gang, they claimed. Later they were blackmailed into paying nearly $10,000 to the gang members through their fear of publicity, they explained.
Arguments to the jury by prosecution and defense were completed late yesterday. Judge Gardner instructed the jury when court opened today. Early this afternoon the jury still was deliberating.
Financial Combining Buys Ship Line
WASHINGTON (P) — A. P. Associates, Inc., a Texas-North York-West Coast financial co-bine, today bought the controllable interest in the American President Lines for $18,360,000.
This offer—topping two other sealed bids—returned the San Francisco firm, one of the world's major shipping concerns to private hands after 14 years of government control.
Heading A.P.L. Associates Ralph K. Davies, president of the American Independent Oil Company of San Francisco.
Among those associated with him in the purchase are the Sign Oll and Gas Co., Los Angeles, at Marine Transport Lines, Inc., New York.
Davies told reporters the group hopes that George Killion, who has been president of the American President Lines under government control, will continue in the office.
He said, "We would hope to keep Mr. Killion as president although he would have some thing to say about that."
Davies said his group bought the line as an investment and had no thought of resale.
J. H. Marshal, of Fort Worth Texas, a director of Signal Oll and Gas Company, said Signal Oll had put about one half the offering price. He said Marine Transportation put up about ten per cent of the offer.
