California Voter Registration
Nears 6,000,000 Mark for Nov. 4
SACRAMENTO (CNS) — California has 5,998,300 persons eligible to vote Nov. 4. Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan announced here today.
The total includes 3,312,668 Democrats and 2,455,713 Republicans, Jordan said. Remainder are Independent Progressives, Prohibitionists, those who declined to state and miscellaneous registrants.
In Orange county, Jordan's figures show:
Democrats, 56,216; Republicans, 66,147; Independent Progressive, 62; Prohibition, 266; declined to state, 4293; miscellaneous 263; total registered, 127,247.
The secretary of state estimates that 1,130,660 persons failed to register to exercise their voters privilege at the November election, a figure that represents about a seventh of the adults eligible for registration in California.
Democrats gained 316,900 registrations since the June primary and Republicans, 263,267, Jordan said. Between June and the present time, Democrats had 803,322 more registrants than Republicans, and the lead has increased
Report Shows Heavy Summer Use Of City Parks
A report released yesterday by the city of Anaheim revealed that an estimated 50,000 persons representing 228 picnics used the two parks, LaPalma and city park in Anaheim from May to September.
Records of picnics are incomplete from May to July 1, since the city had not begun registering picnics at that time. From July to September, 174 picnics were registered, 146 in city park, 28 at LaPalma.
The significant part of the report was that of 31,950 people actually registered, 41,950 were from Los Angeles county. Of the rest, 5530 were Anaheimers, 5270 were from all over Southern California with Orange county groups acting as hosts, and 6200 were from Orange county.
The figures, the report said, in no way account for the large group of family picnics and other groups using the park, numbering less than 50 people. By comparing picnic registration with plunge attendance, the report said, the best days at the plunge have been those days when the picnic registration was the highest. The conclusion drawn from this observation was that a large portion of the plunge attendance comes out of town persons partim-

IT LINCOLN?—Western Maryland Railway officials have unearthed from the national Archives in Washington what may be the only picture in existence of Abraham Lincoln on the way to his famous Gettysburg address. Lincoln students have conceived there are no such pictures. The one taken above, an 1863 photo, was made at Hanover Junction, Pa., it has been established. Some followers of Lincoln lore believe the tall figure in the stovepipe hat is Lincoln on the way to Gettysburg and offer evidence from various details in the photo as support.

Rotary Speaker Discusses Space Travel Hazards
Man is going to the moon some day, but he won't find it so rosy, was the prediction made yesterday at the Anaheim Rotary club meeting by Frank Flower, astronomer and scientist associated with Knott's Berry Farm.
Flower pointed out that the temperature on the moon varies almost 500 degrees from day to night and the surface apparently is barren rock, with mountains rising vertically sometimes for 6000 feet. There is no atmosphere.
Even so, he said, who ever controls the moon will be in a position to control the world.
Outer space is no longer a mystery, the speaker said. Monkeys and mice have risen in rockets 200 miles above the earth without bad effects. In fact, Flower said, fuel is ready for the trip to the moon, but it will take lots of money to accomplish the feat.
As part of his lecture, Flower showed photographs of the moon, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. He was introduced by C. George Hedstrom, science teacher at Anaheim High school. Arch Baker presided.
Others heard from during the course of the meeting included Ray Alden, Jeff Palin, Walt Taylor, Mel Gauer, Dr. Howard Tews, Ralph Focht, Jim Morris, Harry Nutt, E. B. Johnson, Carryl White, Bob Clark, Dr. M. Gaylord Father of Stanton Woman Dies

KC’s Celebrate Columbus Day
Knights of Columbus met last night at the KC hall where a memorial service was held in celebration of Columbus Day.
Dr. Joe Ersek introduced John Heinz of the local Council who related on Columbus from his younger days and how he was commissioned by queen of Spain with three ships to sail West. The hardships that betook him and his crew in those days compared with the present day sailing, is a wonder how they ever reached America. Most of their navigation was guess work and speed and time was estimated by Columbus himself.
A debate was formed on Proposition No. 3, with Barney Jordan. Carl Heinz, Frank Karcher taking the affirmative side and Steve Gallagher, Jim Slobodian and Paul Koennings on the negative side, but the negative side did not have their heart on the subject.
Bill Tucker, Grand Knight of the Loyola Council, spoke briefly and then presented a film the "Loyola Story."
This film explained the life a student leads in the University and what he is taught while a student there. The film itself was an informative and colorful affair.
The meeting adjourned with rereshments served, Bob Ryan in charge.
