Co. K Sergeant Lauds Guardsmen Of 40th Division for Korea Work Anaheim can be proud of her own national guard unit, Co. K of the 224th infantry regiment, and California can be proud of its division, the 40th. S/Sgt. John C. Baumfalk of 4016 Carol dr., Fullerton, documented the above assertion with a few comments on the California divisions' Korean service. "Co. K went into combat like a bunch of veterans," he said. "Right off the bat, the company was stuck out on an outpost about three miles into enemy territory. They handled themselves well, their casualties were low and they never ground to the Reds," he said. The 40th division, according to Baumfalk, replaced the veteran 24th division in the line and the brasshats were worried about replacing the "first team" with the "second string." However, their fears were groundless. Baumfalk said, because the division made a proud record for itself, as did the Oklahoma 45th, which replaced the First cavalry division. Baumfalk, known to the men of Co. K as "The Little Colonel" Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords.—Psa. LV. 21. LINES-O-TYPE—Francie Hurd because of his advanced age (he's 34 now), was a 60mm mortar squad leader. He left the states with Co. K, and returned after 15 months of oversea duty. At different times he had been the company's publicity man and also taught bugling. He's a native of Garfield, N.J., and didn't discover California until 1945, when he came to Anaheim. Later he moved to Fullerton, where he lives with his sister, Mrk. J. A. Van Houten. He makes his living by flying a hobby he converted into a full-time pursuit; bugling. S/SGT. JOHN BAUMFALK (The Little Colonel) At present he is teaching the Monterey Park girls' drum and bugle corps and in the past he instructed the champion Santa Ana VFW drum and bugle corps. Sgt. Baumfalk and his buddies of Co. K will welcome their old division commander, Maj. Gen. Daniel Hudelson, to a reunion banquet to be held Oct. 30 in Anaheim Elks club. County 4-H Club Schedule Annual Achievement Night Orange county's seven hundred 4-H club members are holding their annual 4-H achievement night program Oct. 16, 7:30 at Fremont school, Anaheim. This is the climax of the year of 4-H club work, starting Farm Advisor W. A. Humphrey. Many awards and recognitions are given that evening to some of the outstanding 4-H club members and clubs of Orange county. The outstanding 4-H club boy and girl for 1952 presented — they are Orange county's 1952 all-stars, George Kellogg, president of Orange county farm bureau, will make some special farm bureau awards county "National 4-H Club Congress Delegates." Presentations of achievement awards is to done by Lee Hasenjaeger county key banker. The nation award contestant winners' nouncement is by Henry Louis fellow, agriculture extension service. Two former Orange county club members, Mrs. George Rent Cole of Buena Park and Dald Rosedale, Yorba Linda, talking on "The Value of Our Club Work." Harold Wahbler county director of the agricultural extension service, will welcome the group attending the program. Four-11 members participate in the program are Darrel Hillshorn, Costa Mesa, with an accolade selection; Ronald Schnittridge, Garden Grove; song leading, accompanying him is Priscilla Barker or Garden Grove. A dress review staged entirely The words of his mouth were smoother than butter, but war was in his heart; his words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords—Psa. LV. 21. LINES-O-TYPE—Francie Hurtado isn't going to a pow-wow, but she'll make a mighty swell Slick Chick to head this year's Anaheim Hallowe'en festivities. Mrs. Vera Auest deserves a lot of praise for the kick-off for the 29th annual festival... Tragedy struck Anaheim when the body of Arle Boettger, 28, was found near Indio. We offer our condolences to the grief-streken family... Anaheim's Len Kolb may help Ray Russo's Orange Coasters against San Berdoo. Kolb is one brilliant field general. If he packed more weight, he'd be an all-American... Jack Dutton will soon have a bird sanctuary at his Orange-thorpe country estate. VIA, ANAHEIM—Those words—VIA, ANAHEIM—are making Center st., a truck route. Once upon a time it was considered good to have traffic flow through a town. Nowadays, we know better. Traffic brings little business—if any. FOLKS—Chris DeSoto is a busy man these days. It's the middle of the harvest season and they're turning tomatoes into catsup... Afton Reinert is a good man with the figures. The Anaheimer turns out the checks for one of the county's largest industries... Ralph Petty will tell you that being a payroll clerk is just another job. In these days of big payrolls, the paymaster pays out a lot of money, but sees very little of it himself... Grace D. Reed was all set to be transferred to Wilson Phelps' former financial institution. But the customers at the bank where she is teller protested. "It isn't fair to us," the influential citizens complained, "to transfer the most efficient teller we've ever had." Transfer cancelled... Santana college really has a sweetheart for a song leader—Helen Wier, who once was Miss Anaheim and Miss Orange county. EXCUSE—A lot of guys we know are using the Hallowe'en Whiskérino as an excuse for getting out of shaving for a month. At present he is teaching the Monterey Park girls' drum and bugle corps and in the past he instructed the champion Santa Ana VFW drum and bugle corps. Sgt. Baumfalk and his buddies of Co. K will welcome their old division commander, Maj. Gen. Daniel Hudelson, to a reunion banquet to be held Oct. 30 in Anaheim Elks club. Farm Center Sets Citizenship Nite The emphasis will be on citizenship when members of Anaheim Farm bureau 'center hold their regular meeting in AUHS cafeteria Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. In line with the "Citizenship Night" theme, LeRoy Lyon, Jr., assemblyman-elect from the 75th district, will explain the propositions which will appear on the general election ballot Nov. 4. Entertainment will include a community sing, led by Walt Taylor. A door prize, donated by J. C. Penney Co., will be given away. General Calls USAF Korean Program 'Fizzle' WASHINGTON (UP)—The Marine Corps commandant says the Air Force's program to disrupt enemy supply lines in Korea is a "ffzzle." He said Communists have brought up more guns than ever before. But, Gen. Lemuel C. Shepherd said yesterday, he thinks the continuing Air Force and Navy bombings of big power plants and key industrial centers in North Korea must have hurt the enemy, judging from the "awful screen and cry that has come from Moscow and Peiping." The Leatherneck chief was sharply critical of the Air Force interaction program launched shortly after the Korean truce talks got underway and designed to operate around-the-clock in efforts to knock out enemy road and rail supply lines. Not only has the program failed in Korea, Gen. Shepherd told a news conference called on his re- LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Transfer cancelled... Santana college really has a sweetheart for a song leader—Helen Wier, who once was Miss Anaheim and Miss Orange county. EXCUSE—A lot of guys we know are using the Hallowe'en Whiskerlo as an excuse for getting out of shaving for a month. MUSINGS—Have you seen anything new in sweater girls lately? Seems like the naturally endowed gals feel like picketing those with synthetic build ups. Otherwise they wouldn't make the remarks they do... Speaking of females, why is it that gals who shouldn't, do? Slacks are becoming to some shapes, but not to others. But they're eye catchers any way you look at them... Don't let a man tell you he didn't inherit something from his ancestors. Baldness is inherited you know... Speaking of those who comb their hair with a wash rag; ever notice that the most distinguished men you know don't have much overhead?... To make a point after touchdown, you've first got to make the touchdown... Already yet they're trying to sell you 1953 calendar-girl calendars... Who was it that said a private nurse was one that was too cute for wards? MEMO — Elections are three weeks off. Study the issues carefully so that you will understand the propositions. Study the candidates who are running for office and, on Nov. 4, vote. Anaheim made a record in the school election of a year or so ago. Let's make a record in the national election, too. NITECAPSULE — Men work; women weep—but seldom do women weep because men must work. The Leatherneck chief was sharply critical of the Air Force interaction program launched shortly after the Korean truce talks got underway and designed to operate around-the-clock in efforts to knock out enemy road and rail supply lines. Not only has the program failed in Korea, Gen. Shepherd told a news conference called on his return from an inspection tour in Korea and the Pacific, but he said he questioned whether deep interuction—efforts to knock out such supply lines far from the front—ever could succeed completely. If it has not succeeded in Korea, he asked, how could it be effective in Europe where communication lines are highly developed? There was no immediate comment from the other services, or from the joint chiefs of staff. However, some weeks ago after the first raids on the Yalu river power plants, the Air Force itself indicated in several ways that it was dissatisfied with its "Operation Strangle." Pressure Report CHICAGO (P) — The policy-directing NCAA council awaited a report today on whether football bowl games spur pressures that lead to flagrant recruiting practices. The report was prepared by a special extra events committee. Walter Byers, NCAA executive director, said chances are no official announcement of the report's content will be made until January at the organization's convention in Washington, D.C. WASHINGTON (P) — The U.S. supreme court refused 8-1 yesterday to hear appeals by Julius Rosenberg and his wife, convicted atom spies who face execution in New York's Sing Sing prison.
