National Fire Prevention Week
Points Up Nation’s Fire Problem
This is National Fire Prevention week. The Orange county Association of Insurance Agents believe that the facts and figures of the nation’s bad record for last year should make us all take the matter seriously.
City Planners Consider Maps Of New Tracts
Several proposed new housing subdivisions were considered yesterday by Anaheim planning commission.
A 25-lot subdivision is proposed by Ralph Maas, Anaheim real estate developer, in the area northeast of Vermont st. and Manchester ave. The tentative map of this tract, No. 1682, was approved subject to engineering requirements, particularly regarding drainage, sewerage and the routing of a new street, Cottonwood circle, through the subdivision.
The tentative map of tract 1648. 77 lots at the northeast corner of North and East sts., proposed by John D. Lusk and Sons of Beverly Hills, was held up for a second time, this time for further engineering study.
A tract map was submitted to the commission, for comment only, of a 328-lot subdivision southeast of the intersection of Orangethorpe ave. and Nichols ave. (Euclid). The 10-acre parcel, owned by Colman and E. P. Hapgood, one of the Anaheim planners, is now in the process of annexation to the city of Fullerton.
Other commission action included the reclassification of two areas in the city. The area on S. Chaudina st., between South st. and Valencia ave. was approved for a change from R-2 to R-3 zoning. Property at the northeast corner of West and Cypress sts. was approved for rezoning from R-1 to R-2 classification.

Asked by the city council to consider a change to A-1 use of the northerly ten acres of the R. G. Mitchell property at Center and East st., the planning commission recommended that the parcel remain as is, in the R-A zone.

After working their way through all these linguistic contours, the commissioners decided something was still lacking.
"Looks to me like we need a lawyer and an engineer to sit down and hash the thing out," said Commissioner Joe Thompson.
"Only trouble with that is that only a lawyer would be able to understand it," opined Commissioner Bob Mungalll. "After all, the lawyer would write it."
That's where the subject was dropped, for the time being.
Seems like Einstein could have been just as clever if he'd asked, "How do you define a building?" instead of asking, "How far is up?"

One-time Orange county riors, both Republicans and Democrats, rallied today in a Veteran committee organization for Eisenhower and Sen. Nixon, GOP standard bearers whose records are known to mill throughout the world.
They met with Brooks Todd of Los Angeles, Southern California chairman of Veterans Ike and Dick, and Richard (An Anderson of Long Beach), assistant, to formulate the plans the county-wide committees.
In some of the counties, not the smaller ones where no year-round Republican organization exist as coordinated units, the erans spearheaded the organization drive behind the GOP staff and bearers, Terry said.
Elsewhere, they have given valuable aid to the organization for the Nov. 4 election and have found ready acceptance to the Republican program among veterans who know war—know that Gen. Eisenhower restore the peace, Terry said.

The public is urged to cooperate fully with all "Junior fire marshals" when they make home inspections. Your local fire department and schools have well formulated programs for these youngsters.
The National Board of Fire Underwriters approves these programs because cold, hard statistics show that they do not prevent fires in homes; 293,776 residential fires is a serious matter and any organized effort toward prevention is well worthwhile.

Brea Boy Sues For Damages
Charles W. Fike, 28, of Brea, who was burned Aug. 3 when a car in which he was riding was hit from the rear and then caught fire, sued in Superior Court today for $150,000 damages.
The smashup, on La Mirada rd., a mile south of Imperial Hwy., west of La Habra, brought fatal hurts to Earl T. Moore, 29, of Buena Park, who died eight hours later.
Fike named Clarence Walter Fields, 32, a La Habra telephone worker, as defendant in the action and charged him with negligence.
The Fields car had cleared the crest of a hill, and rammed Moore's car which was U-turning on the road at the time. Moore's car burst into flames and passing motorists, pulled both Moore and Fike from the wreckage.
