Anaheim Gazette TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA Southern California Salvationists To Install Washingtonian as Chief Lt. Colonel George S. Johnstone of Seattle, divisional commander of the Salvation Army in Washington, Idaho and Montana will return to the same headquarters where he started his Salvation Army career as Southern California's new divisional commander Oct. 1, to receive welcome from civic, religious and Salvationist representatives. Johnstone will succeed Lt. Col. Russell E. Clarke whose retirement from active service was announced recently. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Lt. Col. Johnstone who became a Salvationist cadet with her husband in 1924 after having served as members of the Congress Hall corps where the colonel was a stellar cornetist in the Salvation Army band. The 48-year-old Salvationist chief has previously served as divisional commander in Seattle and in Phoenix where he commanded the states of Arizona and New Mexico after having been "loaned" to the United States government during the depression years when Johnstone directed the New Mexico State Transient Service Bureau. Prior to entering training college, Johnstone attended high school in Los Angeles. Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Johnstone have four sons, George, Jr., who is a Salvation Army lieutenant; John, also a lieutenant in the Salvation Army; Arthur, a cadet in the Salvation Army San Francisco officer candidate school, and Robert, who will become a member of the Congress Hall band of which his father is a former member. Lt. Colonel Johnstone will receive a civic welcome at the Los Angeles Breakfast club Wednesday morning, Oct. 1 and will be greeted by Salvation Army officers in council that same afternoon. On Wednesday evening, Oct. 1, at 7:45 o'clock, Lt. Colonel and Mrs. Johnstone will be publicly installed as Southern California Salvationist leaders by Colonel Samuel Hepburn of San Francisco, second-in-command of the western area Salvation Army work, at 4800 S. Hoover st. in a meeting which will be attended by represetatives from all sections of the seven-county divisional area according to Captain Donald Barry divisional secretary and second-in-command. The general public is invited to attend the evening public service. Lyle Wallace Wins Toaster Speech Trophy Toastmasters club of Anaheim Lyle Wallace Wins Toaster Speech Trophy Toastmasters club of Anaheim delivered into politics again last night at their regular weekly meeting. Table topic master, Leroy Ater, used the latest political subject, the Nixon expense fund, for his table topic and succeeded in arousing the interest of the members as politics always does at this particular time. The Senator Nix-an episode was used as the subject. Toastmaster for the evening Louis Taylor introduced the four speakers who were: Bill Chambers, with the title "A Little Child Shall Lead Them," Ray Damerell who spoke on "The Work Week of a Grocery Buyer," Lyle Wallace, "Help Wanted," and Britt Gray, who choose as his topic, "The Real Dirt." Toastmaster Wallace was awarded the weekly cup for the best speech of the evening. The cup, an original creation by Paul Von Kleben, was presented by Toastmaster Von Kleben, the winner for the previous week. Evaluation of the speaking program was by Page Vincent, Hank Allen, Walter Knott and Dick Herrman, timekeeping by Marcus Gartner. Hal Johnson, of the Armour Co. attended the meeting as a guest of Frank Maguire. President Guy Tester, conducted the meeting and the invocation was by Frank Maguire. Announcement was made that next week's meeting will be held at the Knotts berry farm steak house. William Phipps Returns to US SAN DIEGO—Recently returned here aboard the destroyer USS Brinkley Bass, was William E. Phipps, boatswain's mate third class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Phipps of Terre Haute, Ind., and husband of the former Miss Gertrude Volk of 844 North Helena, Anaheim. The Bass, a six months' veteran of Korean action, served with various Naval shore bombardment units and with the fast carrier Colonel Samuel Hepburn of San Francisco, second-in-command of the western area Salvation Army work, at 4800 S. AUEHS Offers Evening Class In Citizenship A course in Citizenship is among classes being offered this year under the program of the Anaheim Union Evening High school, Principal William Poulson reminded today. Purpose of the course is to help those people who are applying for citizenship. These people are required to pass a test pertaining to our government and the Constitution. The course will consist of a study of the constitution and American government. Those taking the course will be given a chance to learn something of the history of the United States, to understand democracy and become familiar with the privileges and responsibilities of a citizen in a republic. G. C. Beale, U.S. History teacher at the regular AUHS day school, will conduct the course. The course is to be held in Room 3 of the high school on Mondays from 7 to 9 p.m. The course is open to all properly registered aliens. Enrollees may enter the class any Monday night from 7 to 9 at the school. For information regarding this or any of the other 17 adult education classes being offered by the school, those interested should call Poulson at the high school (2231). Anaheim FFA Gets 3rd Prize Competing in the 4-H Future Farmers of America beef cattle division at Los Angeles County Fair Saturday, the entry of Donald McCuistion of Anaheim took third place among Hereford females calved between Jan. 1 and April 30, 1951.
