Anaheim's Hopes high with Return of Don Heinrich
SEATTLE (UP) — Football hopes the University of Washington in 1952 are coming in on a wing a prayer.
The wing, of course, is Don Heinrich's. The prayer is Coach Vie Odell's.
Heinrich is the uncanny pass who set a string of aerial recalls as a junior in 1950. Then, in the Huskies' hopes riding last year, "The Arm" suffered a shoulder injury before thening game. He sat out theon.
But the ailing flipper is report-all right now. The word from Washington camp which open-esterday is that Deadeye Don throwing 'em as well as ever. That means superlative tossing. Is all-America year he set two national passing records—one for completions in a season and her for 60 per cent comple-of more than 150 throws.
AYFIELD, N.Y. (UP) — A week-blaze destroyed "The Flame," night club near this upstate York town.
GRID HOPEFULS — Members of AUHS football squad line up to draw equipment in preparation for workouts which began yesterday. About 40 prospects are taking part in pre-season drills under the watchful eyes of Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke. From left to right are Bob Padilla, Carlos Ochoa, Bill Thomas, John Contreras and Mike Troop. In the foreground issuing equipment is Ted Peter.

AUHS Gridders Start Daily Workouts
Only Five Men From Last Year's Championship Team Draw Equipment
Anaheim Union high gridders began two-a-day workouts yesterday, foregoing the Labor Day holiday to run through conditioning exercises under a hot and energy-sapping sun. Coach Clare Van Hoorebeke's charges were about done in at the end of the double drill session and the heat made some of these boys sick.
But if Anaheim is going to repeat last year's Sunset league performance plenty of workout, sun or not, are going to be the order of the day.
Only five men from the team which won the Sunset league championship last year will be back in action. Twenty-six men from Coach Van Hoorebeke's league winning team have graduated.
This means there is a lot of building to be done in a short time if the Colonists are to repeat their winning ways.
Gone are such stars as all-CIF Center Gene Gasele, Fullback John Steinborn and Quarterback Leonard Kolb, plus a lot of other talented and experienced players.
Drawing uniforms on Friday were some 40 grid hopefuls—and Coach Van Hoorebeke appeared hopeful too. He thought his boys had a chance to turn in a good account of themselves this year—f.
If they get the right mental attitude about the game of football, what it demands of its aspirants and what a chore it will be to get in the kind of shape it takes to win ball games.
Van Hoorebeke stressed the importance of early workouts and said late comers to the team will have a slim chance of making the grade. There won't be time for them to get in shape and the high school teaching staff isn't big enough to give individual attention to men who aren't interested enough in the game to start setting in shape for it now.
Irving Cooper Wins SA City Golf Crown
Irving Cooper, 21, Long Beach, pulled a repeat performance out of his golf clubs at Willowick course yesterday to take the Santa Ana city championship for the second consecutive year. Young Cooper took the 36 - hole finale from Jack Robinson to cop the title.
Last year Cooper beat out Wally Taft to take the Santa Ana city tournament.
In winning his second city tournament, Cooper beat Robinson, former Orange county, Santa Ana Country club and Santa Ana city champ, 7 and 6. Robinson is presently the Willowick Men's club champ.
Cooper won over 32 players who were in the championship playoff flight. He beat Leo Sweado 4 and 3 Saturday morning, then took Frank Hanson 2 and 1 Saturday afternoon.
On Sunday Cooper downed Al Smith 4 and 3 in the a.m. and Wally Taft 4 and 3 in the p.m. Then on Monday he took the title from Robinson.
Cooper is slated to enter the state amateur tournament at Pebble Beach in September. He is no stranger to the championship ranks, having won the Thunderbird championship at Palm Springs, the Lake Tabou tourn
Van Hoorebeke stressed the importance of early workouts and laid late comers to the team will have a slim chance of making the grade. There won't be time for them to get in shape and the high school teaching staff isn't big enough to give individual attention to men who aren't interested enough in the game to start setting in shape for it now.
Coach Van Hoorebeke and his assistants, John Wallin and Bill Dickes, a slim nucleus of talent around which to build their team this year. Returning for more grid action are five players from last year's team who can boast some experience.
Speed merchant Aaron Peralta, a sharp looking halfback in his sophomore year, should be a standout again. He has the speed and wherewithal to turn in some outstanding football.
The only two others who played regularly are Jim Roberts, fullback, who played mostly defense last year, and Dean Philpott, defensive end.
Jerry Boren, who played some last year, is potentially one of the standouts of the Colonist team. Defensive Center Ray Koenigman also played good ball last year and could easily become an excellent football player.
As for the rest of the men who have turned out for the team so far, they are just one big question mark. It's this sort of question mark that makes coaches old men before their time.
As Van Hoorebeke said, mental attitude can be the deciding factor in whether or not a team will provide the team has the verses.
The Colonists have until Sept. 10 to prepare themselves. On that date they meet Redlands at Redlands. They follow that game Sept. 26 by taekling Chaffey La Palma stadium. Both Chaffey and Redlands have a reputation for being consistently tough arms to beat.
Last year Redlands beat the Cals out by a 7-6 score and Chaffey walloped the Colonists by a 6-5 tally. The rest of the schedule:
Oct. 3—Citrus at Citrus.
Oct. 10—Las Vegas at Las Vegas.
Oct. 17—Newport at Newport (beginning of league play).
Oct. 24—Santa Ana at Anaheim.
On Sunday Cooper downed Al Smith 4 and 3 in the a.m. and Wally Taft 4 and 3 in the p.m. Then on Monday he took the title from Robinson.
Cooper is slated to enter the state amateur tournament at Pebble Beach in September. He is no stranger to the championship ranks, having won the Thunderbird championship at Palm Springs, the Lake Taheo tournament, the Reno tournament and the Long Beach city championship earlier this year.
In 1950 and 1951 Cooper was LA city champ and at Montebello in 1951 he beat Lloyd Mangrum and Zel Eaton in medal play shooting an 11 under par 205 in 54 holes.
