When You Buv in Anaheim Sleeping Sickness Feared Spreading As Death Toll Continues to Rise SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — With the death toll at 33, state health authorities today continued their campaign against encephalitis or sleeping sickness. "Where we were getting four or five suspected cases a day, we are now getting only two or three over a period of three days," said Dr. Elmer Bingham, director of the San Joaquin Health District. Dr. Bingham, although indicating the trend is downward, said it is unlikely the worst encephalitis epidemic in California's history will abate entirely until cool weather sets in. A total of 537 cases of suspected encephalitis have been reported, mostly in the hot Central Valley area. Two deaths were reported yesterday, the victims being Frederick Beindn, 48, of Sanger, and Leonard Andrews, 59, of Stockton. Meanwhile, a 12-year-old San Rafael boy, described in serious condition, has been confined at Marin General hospital with a suspected case of encephalitis. It was the first suspected case in the comparatively cool Bay Area. Authorities reported yesterday at a meeting with Gov. Warren in Sacramento that the southern San Joaquin Valley, where intensive mosquito-killing measures have been taken, has reported a decline in the number of cases of the mosquito-borne disease. However, Dr. Wilton L. Halverson, State Public health director, told the Sacramento group the disease apparently is spreading to previously untouched areas, including Trinity, Shasta and Modoc counties in the north. Inyo county, over the Sierra Nevada to the east, has reported a number of cases, he said. Air Force Jet Fighter Shoots Down B-17 by Mistake, Six Men Missing EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AP)—Two survivors from the B-17 bomber that was shot down by a new type jet fighter were picked up in the Gulf of Mexico today by a navy minesweeper. Both were in good physical condition. The air force identified the two as S-Sgt. Charles D. Jones, 31, Meridian, Miss., and Airman Second Class Peter R. Rosing, 22, Ingleside, Ill. Both said they felt fine despite their ordreal of being shot down and tossed about in stormy gulf waters in a life raft throughout the night. THE WANT AD NUMBER 2206 Announcements Marine Flyer Killed in Training Crash Killed in the crash of his attack bomber during a practice run at the marine corps bombing range on Trabuco Mesa late yesterday, the pilot was today identified by El Toro base authorities as Capt. Richard Dana Schneider, 28, Costa Mesa, son of Brig. Gen. Melvin F. Schneider, USMC (ret.). Capt. Schneider's planet was one of three from the El Toro base that went down yesterday. Maj. Richard S. Hewitt escaped with minor injuries when his Corsair fighter plane crashed in a bean field a mile and a half southwest of the base at 3:05 p.m., a little more than an hour before Capt. Schneider met his death on the bombing range. 15 miles southwest of the base. Major Hewitt's crash was blamed on engine failure. Second Lt. Paul E. Loudenslager, 25, Laguna Beach, member of the same attack squadron as Capt. Schneider, and flying a sister ship, escaped with a slight shaking up when he parachuted from his plane at 5000 feet over Fontana at 9 p.m. His craft caught fire in the air and Lt. Loudenslager ballied out, landing close to the wreckage of his plane in a vineyard north of Foothill blvd. Cause of Capt. Schneider's crash during a practice run on a bombing target has not been determined, base officials said today. His wife, Therese, and three children, Richard, 3, William, 2, and Anne, 4 months, reside at 13061 Alburne Ave., Costa Mesa. His father lives at Aubery, Calif., and his mother, Mrs. Katherine Schneider, in San Diego.
