Eisenhower Wins Invitation Battle To Speak at Nat'l Plowing Contest
By The Associated Press
Republican presidential candidate Dwight D. Eisenhower today won a battle of invitations over his Democratic opponent, Gov. Adalai E. Stevenson of Illinois.
Both were invited to address the National Plowing Contest at Kasaphi, Minn., and both said they would accept and speak on Sept. 6.
For a while it appeared Kasson might provide one of the most dramatic of all early—campaign events—a possible face-to-face meeting of the major candidates as they battled for the farm vote.
But officials of the contest ruled early today that both could not speak on the same day. They decided that Eisenhower, who had accepted their invitation first, should speak Sept. 6.
Stevenson, however, was given a chance to speak first. Officials said they invited him to change his speaking date to Sept. 5.
Stevenson Declines
In a pre-dawn statement, Stevenson's office said he was turning down the Sept. 5 invitation because of prior commitments.
Robert Hurrle, chairman of the platform program committee of the Plowing Match, explained the organization did "not want a political rally... no one could get any plowing done."
There were these other developments:
Mississippi Democrats-for-Eisenhower, who lost a skirmish yesterday with Stevenson's forces in the state Democratic convention, met today to place Eisenhower's name on the ballot with an independent slate of electors.
In Mississippi, any group may place electors on the ballot by getting a petition signed by 400 qualified voters.

convention next month, and indicated they would try to be present.
The CIO has come out for Stevenson; the AFL, traditionally neutral, has not taken a definite stand but is under pressure to do so this year.
President Truman yesterday told the International Typographical Union he will continue to fight to get the Taft-Hartley Labor Act amended, even after he leaves the White House. His promise was made in a message read to the Cincinnati meeting.

The association now has only four visiting nurses available to care for patients in the home.
Miss Lynette Mann, Visiting Nurse director, said "There are many cases in which a vocational nurse can do all that is prescribed by the patient's doctor under the supervision of a registered nurse."
"They give only medications permitted to be administered by members of the family. Registered nurses will continue to give the more specialized care.

LYNMOUTH, England (UK)—Police warned today that the toll from Saturday's devastating flood on England's Southwest Coast may go as high as 90 dead.
The latest official casualty figures for the flash torrent stood at 13 known dead, with 28 missing and presumed dead. Seven of the bodies so far recovered have been identified.
But unofficially the police said they still had no word on at least 50 more holidayers who were believed to have been in the resort area on Friday night when sudden downpours sent the quiet little Lyn river raging over this picturesque little Devon honeymoon resort.
