Anaheim’s Girls’ Tennis Team Edged 4-3 by Monrovia Netters
Anaheim’s junior girls’ tennis team battled a scrappy bunch from Monrovia for three hours in their regular weekly Southern California Junior Tennis league match yesterday but bad to accept a bitter 4 to 3 defeat with only Jean Williams in the singles and Joanne Kellogg and Judy Debevee in the second doubles being able to squeeze out a win.
Jean followed up her double victory of the weekend in which she gained both the 13-year-old and 15-year-old crowns in the Orange county championships, with a surprisingly easy 6-1, 6-3 win over Sandra Veenboer of Monrovia, who ranks fourth in Southern California in the 13-year-old class. Miss Williams never allowed her more experienced opponent to get under way as she took over control of the match at the very beginning and held a lead all the way.
Doubles Win
In the second doubles spot Joanna Kellogg and Judy Debevee, who have proved to be a smooth-striking combination, were pressed in the second set, but pulled out a 8-2, 9-7 win against McFarland and Claire Rankin to take the two points which go to the winning doubles pair.
Karen Lenain and Mary Flynn, a new team in the first doubles played for two and one half hours, with the match being finished under the feeble lights usually used when the skaters take over the courts, but were unable to take two points needed for a team victory when they dropped a 6-8, 6-4, 9-7 heartbreaker to Carol Kristin and Pat Worthman.

Yesterday the Roarding Rainbows turned back the host team in a wild scoring affair to advance to the semi-finals of the Brea tournament. The Rainbows had to come from behind and did so in the fifth by scoring 13 runs.
Anaheim scored one run in the first to take the lead, but in the bottom of the second Brea scored five runs; in the third, four runs, and two in the fourth. Anaheim scored three runs in the third and one run in the fourth. Going into the fifth, Anaheim trailed 11 to 5.
In the top of the fifth the Rainbows came to life and scored 13 runs which included two grand slam home runs, one by John McDonald and one by Bill Larson. Anaheim collected nine hits in the inning. Bill Larson and John McDonald each got two hits to pace the winning attack.
Anaheim added three more runs in the sixth to bring their total to 21 and held Brea to 11 for the rest of the game.
Anaheim plays La Habra at 4 p.m. today. The Rainbows hold a close decision over La Habra, by turning them back last week to 5.

Fishing Lore
By AL BACORE
Looking around this week, we just realizing how top-rate the competition is in the First Annu Newport Harbor Deep Sea Derby: The papers reported several Albacore contests and tournaments last week, and it was interesting to note most of them were won with catches in the 22-5-lb. class. On the other hand, Bill Tambellini, of Corona de Mar entered a 33-lb. 9-oz. Albie de Newport Harbor Derby, and he missed the top-six “Winner Circle” by over a pound. Six place for the week was all wrapped up by Harry Simmons of Burbank with his 34-lb. 12-oil prize. Top honors for the week were taken by Bill Conrad of Hollywood who boasted a 40-lb. beauty.
Don’t get the idea that Newport Harbor’s Sea Derby is too tough for the average fisherman. The whole contest is made up of “Average fishermen.” The point is, those fellows on top at the end of each week should really get a pat on the back as well as a prize. Especially when laurels are being handed out to anglers catching fish weighing 10 to 15 pounds less than theirs.
A lot of good signs showed up in the albacore waters this past week. For one thing most fish were smaller . . . not as many or those big torpedos. A lot of skip
Karen Lenain and Mary Flynn, a new team in the first doubles played for two and one half hours, with the match being finished under the feeble lights usually used when the skaters take over the courts, but were unable to take two points needed for a team victory when they dropped a 6-8, 6-4, 9-7 heartbreaker to Carol Kistler and Pat Westbrook.
Drop Two More
Monrovia completed the rout when Judy Lamori, Anaheim, lost to Jean Prager, 7-5, 6-3, after holding a 4-1 advantage in the first set, and Donothy Thomas of Anaheim battled Pat Cushman all the way but lost 6-4, 10-8.
Anaheim still holds a mathematical lead with the last and deciding match against the Arcadia team on their home grounds next week being the one to determine the team to receive the individual trophies given to each member of the winning team.
Waller Johison, pitching 21 years for the Washington Senators, hurled the greatest number of shutouts in major league history, 112.

Referee Ruling Roost in Boxing
By MURRAY ROSE
HELSINKI (AP)—This Olympic boxing tournament makes a traveling boxing writer long for Madison Square Garden, where we've seen some rank decisions handed out.
But, brother, whatever we've seen in the Garden can't hold a candle to some of the goings-on in this amateur clout carnival. This show is supposedly put on to determine the world's best amateur boxers. If you've had that idea, you're wrong.
Prima Donnas
The referees are the prima donnas, the ring Hamlets, of this tournament.
They've got a yard long string of don'ts to follow. And they follow it right into the Gulf of Finland. The United States has seven men in the quarter-finals of the tourney, the same number as Russia. The pugs of the two countries might get their eagerly awaited swings at each other—maybe. It's up to the refs.

TOPS IN NATIONAL LEAGUE HURLING
BY JACK HAND
Associated Press Sports Writer
Robin Roberts is proving his right to the title-best pitcher in the National League.
While Philadelphia leads the best of the nation in going wild over little Bobby Shantz of the Phillies, Mr. Roberts quietly piles up wins for the Phillies.
Shantz probably will beat him to the 20-win poll for he goes after No. 19 today in Detroit, but Roberts won't be far behind. He leads the National with 16 wins after last night's 7-3 success against Cincinnati.
Phils Win 6th
The Phils continued their surge in the National with a sixth straight over the Reds on a wild six-inning rally in the eighth. Willie Jones' three-run homer teared the attack.
Brooklyn snapped its five-game losing string, shading Pittsburgh 3 in the 10th on Carl Furillo's first hit in 16 times at bat. The factory added a half game to theodger lead, now measuring 4½ times, after the runnerup Giants pitit a twi-night double header with Chicago.
