July birthdays were celebrated and birthday cakes were served. Entertainment was presented by Edmond Thompson, Fullerton instructor of steel and standard guitars, and his pupils. Stunts were presented by members of both clubs. A short business meeting was conducted by each of the clubs and it was announced that a good attendance is expected at the San Orco district meeting to be held Sunday in the Santa Ana YWCA. The tournament is expected to top its success of last year, and some excellent tennis will be played in the men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Back to School For Housewives There is a growing trend among housewives to take part time college classes, both in the fields of general education and vocational training. This was emphasized in the business education conference at UCLA July 18 and 19 in which Miss Jessie Gustafson, Fullerton junior college business education instructor served as resource person for one of the work shops. The theme of the conference was "Business Education—a Forecast," and it was brought out that more and more housewives are attending junior college a few hours each week to take such courses as English; psychology, speech, art, music and dressmaking, and to learn typing, short-hand, accounting, merchandising and other business education subjects. The housewives take work in the regular day classes to whatever extent their time will allow. Miss Gustafson has had broad experience in the business world and specializes in the field of secretarial training, office machines, business correspondence and personal finance. She is now completing her work for the ph.d. degree at the University of Los Angeles, and is writing a book on personal finance for college students. The tournament is expected to top its success of last year, and some excellent tennis will be played in the men's singles and doubles, women's singles and doubles, and mixed doubles. Participating in the event will be such tennis experts as Pat Canning Todd (just returned from Wimbleton), Beverly Baker Fleitz, Pat Yeomans, Barbara Kimbrell, Barbara Green, Helen Perez, Dorothy Bundy Cheney, Mary Prentiss, Gracyn Wheeler Kelleher, Alan Cleveland, Robert Perez, Glen and Clyde Hippensteil, Nolan McQuown, Tom Chambers, Glen Bassett, Don Livingston, and more, including Vincent and Lonnie Fotre, Franklin K. Lane, III, Alex and Marge Hall, the Wesley LaFevers, the Don Woods, the Glen Austins, and Charlie Farrell. Watching the matches will be such tennis greats as Gussie Moran, Frank Parker, Alice Marble, Helen Willis Roark and Don Budge. Ginger Rogers and Greg Bautzer will play in a tennis match, and Ozzie and Harriet Nelson and Gail (Patrick) and Cornell Jackson, with Dinah Shore and George Montgomery, will be among the spectators. Saturday evening, Aug. 2, the Kenneth T. Kendalls will host a yachting cocktail party for the participants aboard the G. C. Gaudin yacht, the CANIM. Festive lighted lanterns and a Hawaiian band will lend atmosphere for the gala party. Also that evening, there will be a semi-formal tennis dance in honor of the participants in the tournament, their friends, and members of the club. Sunday, Aug. 3, the finals of the tournament will be played, followed by awarding of trophies, and an informal tennis dinner-dance.
