YORBA LINDA—This small town that nestles in the rolling hills of lush orange groves and oil derricks is mighty proud. Richard M. Nixon, the 39-year-old vice-presidential candidate, was reared here. Though proud of Nixon, Yorba Yinda hardly remembers the youth whose rise on the national scene has been so meteoric. Most of his classmates have grown up and moved away to earn their living elsewhere. Dave Collins who grew up in Yorba Linda and was in the same class with Gen. Dwight Eisenhower's running mate will tell you quite frankly, "I remember him, all right. But to be quite frank I can't quite place him." Dave remembers some of his other classmates, though. Lynn Sheller, the director of the Fullerton college, apparently gets the credit for laying the foundation for Nixon's colorful career as a dynamic forceful speaker. It was he who coached Nixon as a sophomore when he represented Fullerton in the national constitutional oratorical contest. NOTEWORTHY—A musty old Fullerton annual (1927) lists Richard Nixon as a second violinist with the late Harold E. Walberg's orchestra. But the 1928 annual says: "Special mention should be made." Fullerton was a football power then with players like Tom McElhaney, Frank Det Glorgio, Kenneth Cleseley, Albert Rothermael, Willard Hershberger, Kermitt Wood and Bob Williams, to mention a few.
