Salvation Army Makes Appeal For Salvage
Throughout the large three-story Salvation Army Social Service center which serves this southern California area, scores of homeless handicapped men have been busy reconditioning thousands of articles collected in the annual Salvation Army salvage week drive.
During the past 12 months this area's Social Service center provided 235,000 hours of occupational therapy, 55,380 meals, 20,145 beds plus substantial financial assistance to homeless handicapped men. In addition, it provided approximately $8000 in food, clothing and household effects to destitute families.
"There is," say Salvation Army officials, "a constant and continuing need for all kinds of salvage items." Clothing, shoes and furniture are especially needed at this time. Those having salvage items to donate are asked to telephone Anaheim 4631 and a Red Shield truck will call at home or office.
Warren Delegation Heads for Chicago
SACRAMENTO (UP)—Gov. Earl Warren leaves today for Chicago to bid for the Republican presidential nomination.
He starts with only 76 votes, far behind the totals of Senator Robert A. Taft of Ohio and General Dwight Eisenhower.
Convention Doings Have Reno Bookies In a Quandary
RENO. (UP)—If you want to bet on who gets the Republican presidential nomination, you'll have to find takers other than Reno's legal gamblers.
As a rule they will take a wager on most anything but they aren't accepting bets on whether Sen. Robert A. Taft or Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower emerges the victor at next week's GOP convention at Chicago.
There are a variety of reasons, not the least of which is that the gamblers themselves can't agree on which side of the fence to play.
One bookie says that if he posted odds, they would be heavy in General Eisenhower's favor.
Another disagrees. He says it will be Taft, hands down.
A third bookie figures Ike for a slight edge.
But don't send your money here.
Even if Nevada's gamblers decide to take bets on the contest, they couldn't take yours unless you were in the state and could walk up to their counters.
The state tax commission, which regulates all gambling in Nevada, has decreed that bookies cannot accept out-of-state bets and can take no wagers by telephone or telegraph even from within the state.

But Warren backers, as from the beginning, say his great chance will be as a compromise candidate in the event of a deadlock. Or Warren probably could break a deadlock by releasing his votes—70 from California and six from Wisconsin.
Warren's 18-car special train will carry California's 70 delegates and 70 alternates.
Warren left on a similar expedition four years ago. He became the vice presidential nominee on an unsuccessful ticket headed by New York Gov. Thomas Dewey.
Reds Apparently Hording Armada Of MIG-15 Jets
TOKYO. (UP)—The Communists no longer throw hundreds of swift MIG-15 jets into the North Korean skies and apparently are hoarding their air amada of 1800 to 1900 planes, the Far East Air Forces said today.
"Until recent weeks, the F-86s (U.S. Sabre jets) were outnumbered as much as three to one in air battles over northwest Korea," a FEAF statement noted.
But in six days of air fighting last month, the Air Force said, American Sabres outnumbered the MIGs most of the time.

Reds Charge Two Commie Truce Camp Deserters 'Spies'
TOKYO. (UP)—Two North Korean soldiers last week made a bolt for Allied lines and surrendered to U.N. sentries, just outside the truce conference site at Panmunjom.
The Communists were flabbergasted—for a time.
Today the Peliping radio lately claimed both men were "spies" and accused the U.N. command of using Panmunjom to "facilitate espionage activities." The Red broadcast was heard in Tokyo.

Your electric service---a "miracle" in the Ar
When the first central electric generating plant began operating in this country, its customers paid twenty-five cents per kilowatt hour for the electricity it produced. If the price were the same today, your household electric bill would be something like $410.00 a year.* But the electric industry has built many millions of dollars worth of facilities, developed new ways for electricity to make your living better—and reduced your cost to a mere fraction of what it was. That's a miracle of accomplishment—probably the best example of what can be achieved by private enterprise at work.
*The average annual consumption of electricity per domestic meter in Edison territory is approximately 1640 kilowatt hours.
"Edison electricity is your best buy—you can depend on it!"

Demos' Candidate In 28th District Appeals Ruling
SAN DIEGO. (AP)—Lionel Van Deerlin, Democratic nominee for congress in the new 28th district, said today he has appealed to State Attorney Gen. Brown against an interpretation of the election laws made by the registrar of voters here.
The 28th district comprises all of Orange county and part of San Diego county.
Van Deerlin said he was advised by Registrar Lex Lord that the candidate's name must appear on the November ballot without designation of an occupation.
Lord ruled that because Van Deerlin had not requested designation of an occupation in the primary election on June 3, he would be unable to list his occupation on the November ballot.
Van Deerlin said in his appeal to Brown that he had inadvertently omitted designating his occupation when filing for the primary ballot.
The voting registration lists classify Van Deerlin as a news-paperman, and his appeal to Brown asks that he be so described on the November ballot.

Christian Science
The Sunday Lesson-Sermon on the subject of "God" in all Christian Science churches explains and illustrates how the understanding of His ever-presence blesses and heals mankind.
The Golden Text (from Revelation (21:3) reads, "Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God."
Matthew relates that Jesus said to the man sick of the palsy, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee." The scribes, who stood by, "said within themselves. This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? ... (then saith he to the sick of the palsy.) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house." And the multitudes "glorified God, which had given such power unto men" (Matt. 9:2-4.6-8).
Mary Baker Eddy declares in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "Having one God, one Mind, unfolds the power that heals the sick, and fulfils these sayings of Scripture, 'I am the Lord that healeth thee,' and 'I have found a ransom'" (p. 276).
