ON THE LAM ... with Jim Lamhofer Anaheim's Junior Legion baseballers battling down to the wire with Fullerton in the league's first round, face much the tougher assignment in the round's final games this weekend... Currently deadlocked with Fullerton for first (the teams sporting identical 1-1 records), the locals must subdue Placentia's potent nine, also still in the running with a 2-2 state; while Fullerton has only to turn back winless Orange. Eddie West comes up with the startling disclosure in his Santa Ana Register column that all Southland sports scribes have been apparently misspelling the name of Anaheim high's Larry Kirchmann the entire season... A CIF official told West that Kirchmann, one of the county's top quarter - milers, spelled his name with two "n's" on his CIF entry card. Reactions to a busy sports weekend just past... Have American golfers finally caught up with Bobby Locke, the South African who almost got chased back across the Atlantic his last trip over here because he was too good?... Locke dropped out of the National Open after his first game. Gregg Drops Major Debut Against Bucs Anaheim's Hal Gregg, making his debut with the New York Giants yesterday, dropped his first major league test with the Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-2. Gregg, who moved up from the Oakland club on the strength of his 11-2 Coast League hurling record, had a 2-2 tie going into the seventh inning with two out. Carefully walking home-run king Ralph Kiner he faced Gus Bell, who then busted up the ball game by pounding a grand slam homer to push the Pirates permanently out in front. Meanwhile from a listless bunch of second divisioners, Chicago has again become the "go-go Sox" of the early 1951 campaign. Giving every evidence that they have pennant designs of their own, the White Sox last night swept a doubleheader from the Philadelphia Athletics, 13-1 and 2-1, to roll up their eighth and ninth wins in the last 11 games. The double win moved them to within a half game of the faltering Cleveland Indians and boosted them to within only three games of the front-running Yankees. Chicago picked up ground on all Robertshaw-Fulton Out P & L, 4-3, Bloomers Drop 10-9 Game to Wolverines Anaheim Bloomers were downed by Brea Wolverines last night at Brea, 10-9. The game proved to be highly controversial in that the winning run was scored unknown to the Wolverines. Mona Carner and Mary Lou Gastelum boasted two hits apiece to lead the Bloomer girls on hitting. Kay Turner led in scoring with three runs. Mona Carner, Kay Dierst and Jo Ann Clark scored two runs each and Doris Holve scored the final tally. Anaheim's next game will be Friday, against Huntington Beach at Anaheim. Coach Lois Alderson and the Bloomer Girls will be going all out to win this one. Reactions to a busy sports weekend just past... Have American golfers finally caught up with Bobby Locke, the South African who almost got chased back across the Atlantic his last trip over here because he was too good?... Locke dropped out of the National Open after his first two rounds, a medioere 75-76—151... Remember Bill Fell, the Cotton sprinter and halfback who ran 9.6s and was supposed to become one of the world's greatest sprinters?... Fell, winding up his eligibility at Oregon, ran a poor fifth in a trial heat at the NCAA championships at Berkeley... And how about Reynolds?... A few years ago Reynolds and Joe Page were called the best pitcher in the American league... Reynolds would start and then tire along about the sixth, and Page would come in and save the win the Allie... Now, with Joe no longer around, Reynolds must figure he has it piece himself... He's finished all 11 of his starts this season, winning seven of them. Can you think of a middle distance race in track and field history that has three great runners in it than Friday night's 400 meters at the National AAU at Long Beach, which will match George Rhoden, Mal Whitfield, and John Barnes?... Rhoden holds the world's record at this distance, while Whitfield holds a score of the 800 meters standard, but Barnes could take them both... And don't count out Herb McKenley, possessor of the world 44 yard mark, who, like Dick Atteasoy, is slowly coming along the comeback trail... Being able to hold the AAU gigantic will help Long Beach to forget that black month last March when the Long Beach Relays were twice postponed and finally cancelled... SC could have captured the NCAA meet with a two man squad... COSTELLO BOOKED VAN NUYS (UP)—Comedian Lou Costello was booked on suspicion of drunk driving today. Coach Lois Alderson and the Bloomer Girls will be going all out to win this one. White Templars, EUB Win Church League Games In the Church League doubleheader last night, White Temple upset Stanton Community in a close ball game, 6-4. The Duncan brothers came through with the big stick to help along with the victory. Duane Duncan got three for four and Hubert two for four. Jack Paulus also contributed with two hits to chalk up a win for Ira Webber. The second game between Grace Lutheran and EUB was fought down to the wire as EUB pulled the game out of the fire in the sixth inning with four runs to win 5-4. Howard Mush was the leading batter for EUB with three for four. Heavies Square Off Tonight in Olympic Matches KANSAS CITY (UP)—The pressure is on the heavyweights and light heavies as Uncle Sam's rugged amateur boxers square off tonight for berths in next month's world Olympic Games at Helsinki. Ten semifinal scraps will precede the championship windup. All the champions qualify for the U.S. Olympic team. Four alternates will be chosen from the losers. Edward Sanders of Los Angeles, representing the all-Navy team, scored a sensational first round knockout over heavweight Lloyd Willis, the midwest regional king, in 1:31 of the first round last COSTELLO BOOKED VAN NUYS UP—Comedian Lou Costello was booked on suspicion of drunk driving today. The Trojans did win an NCAA championship in the war year of 1943 with a four man squad. PGA CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY GETTING UNDER WAY TODAY LOUISVILLE UP—The tournament of upsets, the PGA championship, gets under way today, and one of the safest bets in golf is that a lot of golfers who have been grabbing the headlines will be out of it by Saturday night. And Saturday is only the half-way point in the week-long grind, consisting of two 18-hole qualifying rounds and five rounds of match play. Chiksan Company overwhelmed Real Gold, 16-9 last night at La Palma park in the opener of the Industrial League encounters for the night. In the second game, Robertshaw-Fulton won a "dream" game rom P & L Transmission, 4-3. P & L lead Robertshaw 3 to 1 up until the bottom half of the seventh inning, when with two away, Ray Huston and Cliff Hornton hit successive home runs to tie the ball game three to three. Then Barney Swearingen and George Vierra garnered back to back singles, with Swearingen romping home on Bob Hansfield's safety over the right fielder's head, to win the ball game. P & L Transmission picked up their three runs in the third inning as Bill Pearson singled, followed by Al Bushman's double, both men scoring ahead of Joe Aguirre as he doubled and came home on an error. Chiksan capitalized on the extra base hitting of Bob Ritchie and Jack Russel as they combined to drive in 11 of the Toolmen's 16 runs. The basketball league will Sugar Ray Will Spot Joey Maxim 15 Pounds in Monday Night Bout By GAYLE TALBOT NEW YORK. (UP)—Fights between good men in different weight divisions always are intriguing. The one coming up Monday night between Joey Maxim, the 175 pound champion, and Sugar Ray Robinson, boss of the 160 pounders, is providing the game with the greatest tonic it has had since Joe Louis came out of the Golden Gloves nearly 20 years ago. This is something the experts can get their teeth into. It is the showdown for that large segment of the fraternity which has long claimed, with some seriousness, that the great Robinson could hold his own with the big fellows if given the chance. This observer is of the opinion that Sugar's admirers will find they have made a serious mistake, and that the Negro flash will be happy to return to his middleweights after: Joey has worked his body over for 15 rounds or less. But it is a question which needed to be settled, and it could prove a terrific match. This much is certain. Maxim and his wily manager, Doc Kearns, crave to fight the lighter man so bad that it hurt—and not entirely because it represented a rich pay day. They were certain that Joey, who had fought Jersey Joe Walcott three times and Ezzard Charles five times without being knocked down, could give Sugar a systematic beating and not be hurt himself. Whether Robinson actually wanted to fight Maxim is more difficult to say. He at least pretended not to and repeatedly accused his manager, George Gainford, of trying to get him killed. Some fellows we hold in high respect for their knowledge of the inner workings of the noble pastime say this was just Ray's persuasive of getting more money than the official contract calls for. They do not believe that the world's biggest drawing card is splitting the proceeds 30-30 with Maxim, who never has drawn anybody much. Whatever the strategy behind Sugar's seeming reluctance to scrap a good man 15 pounds his senior; he has shown no signs of worrying since he inked the papers. He has looked relaxed in his training camp and has declared repeatedly that, so far as he is concerned, this is just another fight like all the others before it. Showdown Looming In Women's Open CHICAGO (UP)—A title down between medalist Rawls and defending champion Patty Berg loomed today amid the women's Western Open tournament entered only its second round. Miss Rawls, feminine golfer 1952 money winner with a $10,000, moved against and heralded amateur Mrs. D. Anheaux of Hinsdale, Ill., in upper bracket. In the lower bracket, Miss—seeking an unprecedented open crown—met a capable teur, Carol Diringer of T. Ohio. Only other pro in the bracket is Betty Jameson. If both win, Misses Berg Jameson would clash in to row's quarterfinals and that for would be heavily favorable reach Saturday's 36-hole championship match. Big Pinky Woods of the Stars was touched for nine hits last night but he was effective with men on base. Big gun of the Stars' attack was speed merchant Carlos Bernier, who smacked two runs across in the sixth with a screaming triple. Earlier, he had singled, swiped second and counted on another single. A real pitching thriller is set up for San Diego fans tonight, with the veteran knuckleballer Johnny Lindell throwing 'em for Hollywood against the Padres' young fireball southpaw Willie Luna. Portland's Lyman Linde combined savvy and control with a wicked slider to conquer Los Angeles, 2-1. Linde scattered four hits; walked nobody and whiffed eight. The lowly Beavers got their fifth win in six games against Los Angeles this season and snapped a five-game Angel win streak. The Angels' only run was Bob Talbot's homer in the fourth. Eddie Basiniski's double and Frank Austin's single in the fifth provided Portland's winning margin. The team's initial run came in the second as Basinski singled home Joe Brovia from third. Buena Park Lynx Drop Lionettes 4-3, at Orange Buena Park Lynx evened up the series last night by downing their cross-country rivals, the Orange Lionettes, 4-3, on the Orange diamond. The win gives each team an equal split in the series with 2 wins—2 loss records. The gals from BP boomed out all their bingles in the fourth inning; then had to stave off an Orange rally in the fifth as the Lionettes chased in 3 runs. Sharp fielding on the part of the Lynx then lowered the lid on further scoring despite the fact that the Lynx pitcher gave up 10 scattered lits during the game.
