Elated Anaheim has some justly proud citizens today and Anaheim can be proud of them, too. They've made a mighty contribution to the welfare of the community. For their names, see Page 8. VOLUME LXXXI Anaheim's FIRST Newspaper ANAHE House and Senate Apparently Agreed To Request Use of Taft-Hartley Act WASHINGTON (AP)—The House appeared ready today to go along with the Senate in asking President Truman to use the Taft-Hartley act to re-open the strike-closed steel mills Rep. Howure W. Smith (D-Va) told newsmen he had been assured by many Democrats and Republicans of support for such a move. The law empowers the president to ask a court injunction calling off a strike for 80 days. Anaheimers Invited to Inspect Optimist Club’s New Youth Center After two years of construction, the Anaheim Optimists Boys’ Clubhouse at 113 W. Chartres will officially be dedicated to the youth of the community as public officials, school and youth directors, together with the invited public, assemble to celebrate the completion of the ambitious project. Open house will be scheduled from 6 to 10 p.m. tomorrow, at which time refreshments will be served. Anaheim Optimist J. W. Stephen, Lt. Governor of Zone 4, representing Orange, San Diego, Imperial and Yuma counties, will act as master of ceremonies. Cub Pack 101, the Optimists’ Scout troop, under the supervision of Cubmaster Roy Kirk, will lead in the Supervisors Call For Anaheim Muni Court Bids Approving plans and specifications for the new Anaheim-Fuller-junction calling off a strike for 80 days. Smith planned to tack the request onto a bill to continue wage price, rent and production controls which expire June 30. Debate on the measure opens today with a vote scheduled tomorrow. Meanwhile, John L. Lewis told the striking CIO steelworkers today his mine workers are “in the fight with you” and said his union getting up a 10-million dollar fund to help them win their strike. Lews, head of the 400,000-member mine workers union, pledged the full support of his union in a message to Philip Murray, leader of the CIO unionists who walked off their jobs 17 days ago in a dispute over wages and a union shop. As the steel shutdown moved into its 17th day—with no signs Supervisors Call For Anaheim Muni Court Bids Approving plans and specifications for the new Anaheim-Fullerton Municipal court building, the county supervisors Tuesday called for bids on the construction job, to be opened July 15. Cost estimates as made by Architect William Faulkner of Santa Ana aggregate $89,000, including $75,000 estimates for the building itself and $12,000 for work outside. This would include curbs and gutters on Homer and Los Angeles streets, site of the court building; a paved parking lot to accommodate 40 cars; also a sprinkler system and landscaping. The county recently purchased the site from the City of Anaheim. It is located opposite La Palma park, in the northern section of the city. Design of the projected building is similar to that of the Newport Beach justice court building at Costa Mesa, said Faulkner, except that the plans provide larger office space, including quarters for a deputy district attorney. The building will cover about 5500 feet of floor space. It's exterior will be faced with brick on the Los Angeles street side, the rest of the building to be stucco. Coast Guard Dock Contract Given To Macco Co. Because the low bidder, Trautwein Bros. of Newport Beach, had failed to include alternate items in their bid, the county supervisors Tuesday awarded the contract for the Coast Guard dock in Newport Harbor to Macco Construction Co. of Paramount. Macco's bid of $74,000 was second low among five bids. Trautwein Bros. bid $73,357, but submitted a figure on only one of 29 alternate items included in bid form, for guidance in adding to or subtracting from the base plans and specifications. The Harbor commission recommended the next low bid for that reason, and also because the commission considered that Trautwein Bros. did not have experience in handling the type of equipment needed for placing sheet piling, and would have to purchase such equipment. Harbor Engineer Morgan Noble presented the commission's recommendations to the supervisors. The supervisors approved purchase of 25 pontoons for $2250, to be used in the dock job. The county road department was authorized to furnish the harbor department 300 feet of rail, at $1 per foot. Engineer Noble said the sheet piling is already on hand, having been purchased earlier. Site of the proposed dock is on Bayside drive, adjoining the Balboa Yacht club, where the county owns harbor frontage. The Ohio senator, a top contender for the Republican nomination, said he considers taxes at present levels to be inflationary. Taft told a breakfast conference of business paper editors that he believes he could bring government spending down to around 70 billion dollars in the first year. It is now running about 85 billion. General Manager-Chief Engineer Raymond R. Ribal forwarded the application with supporting letters from Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health officer, E. A. Rinke, chief of the bureau of sanitary engineering of the state department of public health; Paul G. Brown, executive of the regional water pollution control board, and the associated chambers of commerce. Ribal's application pointed out the present inadequate sewerage of the county, its rapid growth, including defense industries and residential tracts and the presence of four military installations—El Toro Marine base, Los Alamitos Naval Air Station, Santa Ana Naval Air Station and the Seal Beach Naval Ammunition and Net Depot. The application pointed out that the sanitation districts had completed plans and specifications for the outfall line and will open bids on its construction contract July 16. Mass Food Poisoning of Mexican Nationals at Atwood Camp Told Mass food poisoning swept through a camp of Mexican nationals at Atwood late yesterday, affecting 102 of the 214 Nationals in the camp, and sending 25 to various hospitals. None of the cases was reported critical, and all of the workers are expected to be back at work within several days. The poisoning, described by Dr. Edward Lee Russell, county health officer, as "staphylococic" food poisoning, was traced to incubation of noon lunches served in the field. The wave of illness attacked the workers at about 2:30 to 3 p.m., according to George Graham, manager of Citrus Growers, Inc., which operates the camp, located in the old Richfield school, on Richfield-Yorba Linda road. The sheriff's offices and county health department were notified, and physicians and nurses were hurried to the scene to attend the stricken workers. Dr. E. H. Brunemeier of Placentia and Dr. George F. Pool of Fullerton answered calls for aid. Ten of the workers were taken to Cottage hospital in Fullerton, one to Fullerton General hospital, nine to Anaheim Community hospital, and five to Orange county hospital. Chief Sanitarian E. E. Frisbie of the county health department went immediately to the scene to investigate the cause of the poisoning, and declared it to be due to the incubation of lunches in the somewhat high temperatures of the fields. Swedish Call Reds Liars; Danish Airmen Will Fight STOCKHOLM (P)—Angry Sweden called the Russians liars today and the Danes alerted their airmen to shoot back if attacked by Soviets. The Swedish cabinet met in an urgent special session to discuss the shooting down Monday by Soviet jets of an unarmed Swedish Catalina rescue plane which was searching for another lost plane. The cabinet had before it the translation of a Russian note stating that the Swedish plane was over Soviet territory and had opened fire first. The Russians claim their territorial waters extend 12 miles into the Baltic. The recognized limit is three miles. Tomorrow the government's foreign policy council—the premier, foreign minister and representatives of both houses of parliament—meets to discuss the incident. IN COPENHAGEN, Adm. E. J. C. Move to Kill Wage-Price Controls Shaping in House Labor Committee WASHINGTON. (AP)—A new move to kill all wage and price controls shaped up today around recommendations of the house labor committee for abolition of the wage stabilization board (WSB). By a top heavy vote, reported to be 16 to 5, the committee last night went on record in a seven-word recommendation to the house: "The wage stabilization board should be abolished." The committee's action came as the house cleared the way for general debate today on the defense production act. Among other things, this would extend wage-price controls for another year starting June 30. The committee's verdict gave powerful ammunition to leaders of the fight to end wage-price controls when the bill comes to a date later this week. An amendment to abolish the WSB probably will be offered by Rep. Kearns (R-Pa., Chairman Burden (D-NC) said if Kearns did not offer it, he would. The committee itself almost sent all the way and recommended elimination of wage controls with the WSB, which fixes government policy on pay raises. After first voting to kill off wage controls, it reversed itself on second thought and left the matter to the house. Barden told newsmen committee members concluded the subject of wage controls "was a little bit out of our field, with price controls still in effect." The WSB has been under fire from congress since its controversial recommendations in the steel dispute. In addition to a 26.1 cents hourly wage increase for steel workers, the board recommended the union shop in the industry. Refusal of the operators to accept the recommendations led to seizure of the mills and the supreme court's historic decision outlawing the president's power to take over private property. In addition, the CIO steelworkers are on strike for the second time this year. Backing up its recommendation to abolish the board, the house committee accused the WSB of overstepping its authority and ignoring national labor policy set by congress in the Taft-Hartley law. IN COPENHAGEN, Adm. E. J. C. Quistgaard, chairman of Denmark's joint chiefs of staff, alerted Danish airmen to shoot back unhesitatingly if fired on by Soviet planes either inside or outside Danish territory. He revealed that Danish military units have had standing orders since March to shoot back to kill, without awaiting further orders, if Soviet ships or planes fire on any Danish unit. Both Danes and Swedes were outraged by the Soviet contention that the Swedes were at fault in the Baltic incident of last Monday. The Soviet claims were contained in a note handed the Swedish ambassador in Moscow by Foreign Minister Andrei Y. Vishinsky. The note, as broadcast by Radio Moscow, said that the Swedish plane flew over the Russian-held island of Dagoe near the Estonian coast, opened fire on Soviet fighters when they ordered it to land, and flew out over the Baltic sea after the Russian planes returned the fire. The Swedish air force had told a vastly different story—that the plane, a Catalina flying boat searching for a Swedish transport plane missing over the Baltic since last Friday and also feared a victim of Soviet jets, was unarmed and was shot down 18 miles outside Russian territorial waters. Two of the downed plane's seven crewmen were wounded in the attack but all were rescued.
