HE'D EXPECTED A GANGSTER AND HIS MOLL LOOKING FOR A HIDEOUT... BUT THESE PEOPLE— TV-RADIOLOGIC Ralph Edwards Returns with An Old Top-Netch Radio Show By TOM E. DANSON HOLLYWOOD — Ralph Edwards, the guy who started the trend of stunt audience-participation shows 12 years ago, and whose show, "Truth or Consequences," attained the highest rating ever received by a commercial show (topped only by a President Roosevelt speech), returns tonight with his great T. or C. over NBC coast-to-coast. Ralph is the fellow who invented the first mystery contests, and started the whole world guessing, which started a brand new gimmick for the industry. It has been said that Ralph was the first person ever to really demonstrate the power of medium. When questioned about this, he modestly told me, "It was really just a matter of having to top yourself each time..." "After all," Ralph explained, "if you've had a sea lion swim the English channel... next week, you have to have a better gimmick... and when the power of the mystery contests such as 'Mr. Hush' and others, wears off... look for something new. So we are constantly trying to top ourselves." I asked Ralph if he had missed the big gimmicks of "Truth or Consequences" while off the air last season, and he admitted that he had missed the fun and excitement of that type of show, but felt that he could not do justice to a "Register and Vote"... THE mystery contests such as "Mr. Hush" and others, wears off... look for something new. So we are constantly trying to top ourselves." I asked Ralph if he had missed the big gimmicks of "Truth or Consequences" while off the air last season, and he admitted that he had missed the fun and excitement of that type of show, but felt that he could not do justice to the launching of his daytime stripper on TV, which now is on summer hiatus. He now has time to concentrate on his first "brain child," T. or C. Ralph was asked about his vacation, and it winds up to be the shortest vacation on record for the "Mr. P. T. Barnum of the airlanes." Tuesday he flew to St. Louis ... Thursday, the sponsor bought his show ... and Friday, everyone in the office was back at work. Even more work is in the future with Ralph's announcement that the show will "hit the road" soon. San Francisco, Chicago and New York are in line for his stunting. Because of this new summer schedule, Ralph has to cancel a part he had in the Paramount picture, "The Stars Are Singing," but I guess you can't do everything ... but sometimes he tries. Wow! What energy that guy's got! DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ... Groucho Marx is vacationing for 13 weeks at a California dude ranch ...
