The names were drawn yesterday. There were applications from 4111 veterans in every state and all the territories. The free land, mostly undeveloped, is served by new canal extensions which bring in Colorado river water. Southern California grants went to: Coyle Wayne Turner, National City. Mack Gates, Hemet. Two hundred of the mountain counties' district's 300 precincts gave the late Lester T. Davis (D-Portola) 5963 Democratic votes to 2163 for his nearest opponent, John A. Bryant (R-Redding). Davis died May 25. It was too late to get his name removed from the ballot. So second district Democrats campaigned for him in order to gain the privilege of naming a November candidate, through a primary victory. Bryant led Davis 2830 to 2085 on the GOP ticket. The "rungs" of a fish ladder on which salmon climb over dams usually are pools of water one and a half to two feet above each other. Republic of India Tackles Job of Educating 60,000,000 Children India has set itself the goal of bringing free and compulsory education to 60 million children. This goal was set by the two-year old Indian Constitution which says: "The state shall endeavor to provide, within a period of ten years from the commencement of this Constitution, for free and compulsory education for all children until they complete the age of 14 years." The task before the Indian government, America's sister republic in Asia, is two-fold: 1. To impart education to larger numbers (at the time of independence, August 1947, the rate of literacy was 13.5%; four years later it was 18%.) 2. To integrate the school with the life of the community; so that education can make a useful contribution to economic and social progress. THE FIRST PART of the task is to be achieved through compulsory education of children up to the age of 14, and a social program for adults. The second is to be accomplished by supplementing formal education of children with preparatory vocational training. This means a program training the student in crafts or practical work to enable him earn a living for himself and contribute to the growth of the national income. The educational goal under British was to train a limited number of young men for service in the department of government. But free India today needs educated youths to work on the land and in offices and factories as part of the development of the country. Therefore, it is essential that gulf existing between training and social environment must bridged. If You Drink! Don't Drive "Peak demand" tells how much capacity we need! "Generating capacity" isn't like warehouse capacity, where products can be stored and withdrawn as the need arises. Electricity can't be stored, so our capacity must be enough to make all the electricity that might be needed on our lines at any given moment. We keep records on that "peak demand" moment each year. In 1951 it was on October 24th—1,559,500 kilowatts. Over the past five years, each "peak" has been higher than the year before, by an average of 95,000 kilowatts. Still more important is the fact that we've kept ahead of peak demand—but it has cost us an average of one million dollars a month for more generating facilities alone.
