Who are our candidates...
Everyday we are asked this question:
"Who is the Gazette going to endorse for offices in the coming primary election?"
You can rest assured that the policy-makers of this paper prefer certain candidates over others—for our own personal and business reasons.
But, by the same token you, the reader, should prefer certain candidates over others—for your own personal and business reasons.
We ask ourselves:
Who are we to be telling you how to vote?
Your situation in the world may be entirely different from ours. Your conception of political matters may be different—and probably better—than ours.
What you want out of the candidates and government may not be exactly the way we see it.
So, we ask ourselves:
Who are we to be telling you how to vote?
WE SORT OF chuckle when newspapers print sample ballots and say vote for this fellow and this proposition. (That usually defeats them!)
If you ferret out the guy on the newspaper who is showing you how to pick 'em, you'll probably find out that he knows considerably less about it than you do, and is influenced by some of personal prejudice.
So, we are not going to tell row to vote.
Besides, is it right in a democracy made up of intelligent, sure people, to presume to them how to vote?
Doesn't that sort of defeat purposes of the secret ballot?
SO, JUST because we have access to a newspaper able to reach thousands of people—we should not set ourselves as the know-it-all come elec day.
We may prefer certain candidates, and once in awhile it out—but...
We earnestly suggest make up your own mind on candidates... weigh abilities to perform public services for you... and vote way you believe is best for you.
Don't listen to anybody else.
Make up your mind yourself.
When you do the government all of us will be better off for us.

Your Senator—
and YOU
Orange county must deal with state government through its legislators.
If they are strong, then Orange county is strong, and can get what it requires.
If they are mediocre, then Orange county gets what is left, if any.
If they are under group control, as well as being mediocre, then Orange county is in a sorry spot.
This campaign for election of a State Senator offers just that choice to Orange county. Free representation, or group control. Strong and able representation, or inexperienced mediocrity. The voters have their choice.
If they want strong and able representation, then they will choose Speaker Sam L. Collins, who has been rightly called "one of the five top men in state affairs".

If they want a Senator free to represent ALL of them, and under no obligation to any pressure group, then they will choose Sam L. Collins, who has fought pressure groups in the Legislature throughout his career.
Pressure groups now trying to seize control of Orange County's Senate seat will not succeed despite the huge sums they are spending for newspaper space and otherwise to win control. The people see this evidence before them, and will rebuke the attempt at the polls.
Besides being Speaker of the Legislature the last 12 sessions, Sam Collins is a member of the State Board of Public Works, and the Board of Regents, University of California; vice-chairman of the important Joint Committee on Highways, and member of the Joint Committee on Agriculture.
Moreover, he is free and uncontrolled.
No practical voter will give up that advantage.

Car Racing Drama to be Presented Tonight in '500 Miles of History'
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD — It's always been my belief that the height of real-life drama is found in watching the 39 sleek, streamlined racing cars roaring at more than two-mile-a-minute speed around the oval track at the Indianapolis Speedway — as they were doing today. That feeling, however, was dispelled somewhat after I had a long distance chat with Tom Hanlon in Indianapolis, Ind. Tom is as much of an authority on the leadfoots and their cars as you'll find in the radio business anywhere—he's made auto racing a hobby from the time, as a 15-year-old, he planned on moulding a career as a race driver. He's a close friend of most of the drivers in today's Memorial Day race, and he's there, putting the finishing touches on "500 Miles of History," a half-hour program which will be aired on the west coast at 8:30 p.m. over CBS stations.
Getting back to drama, for a moment, Tom told me that while it was exciting to watch the speeding buggies, the real drama of the race takes place in the pits. There, the drivers who are forced out of the race temporarily for refueling, a tire-change or a brake check-up are biting their nails with impatience to get back—to try and make up the time lost, knowing that a car standing still never won the big race. He also told me of one other moment almost the equal of the pit-stops

"Ben Hogan National Golf Day Tournament," in which 250,000 of the nation's golfers will compete against the great Ben with proceeds for charity, will be aired from KNX at 4:30 p.m., just 30 minutes after Hogan finishes his round.

Tom explained that each year there are always some rookie drivers who qualify for the auto classic and to them, the event is the biggest, and perhaps the most fearful thing of their life. Wilbur Shaw, general manager of the Speedway (a three-time winner of the big race), calls all the drivers together to explain all rules and regulations, and to instruct the rookies to be most careful going into the first lap.
Shaw says they'll think they're riding the tail of a tornado when all 33 cars go into the first turn, full barrel, all bunched together. Tom says the shivers go up and down his spine when he-hears the talk by Wilbur Shaw; who finishes by telling the drivers to leave the names of their next of kin with him... just in case.
Sounds like "500 Miles of History" with Tom Hanlon from KNX-CBS will be a lot of dramatic and exciting entertainment.
DOWN TV-RADIO WAY ... Errol Flynn recently purchased 13 acres of land at Apple Valley where he plans to start building this summer. He wants to call his new place, "Flynn Inn." However, officials of AV (for publicity reasons) would like to have it called "Errol Flynn's Inn." Flynn now in Jamaica can't be checked for his decision.
TELE-TIPS ... The first Memorial Day boxing bout ever to be held in Madison Square Garden will be televised over KNBH (4) at 7, with LaStarza mingling with Burserol.

JIM WALSH ALMOST
WINS A TIGHT GAME
Hollywood's Jim Walsh is a sad pitcher today. His fast ball was working almost perfectly against Oakland in a Pacific Coast league game last night.
Not a single Acorn reached base for 5½ innings. Then Lenny Neal looped a single. Going into the ninth frame, Walsh was working on a one-hit shutout.
His mates had put together three singles and a fly for a run in the second canto.
In the ninth, the roof fell in. The Acorns piled up four runs—all unearned—to capture the ball game, 4-1. The last three counters came on Tookie Gilbert's homer, his seventh.

Inn, Furniture Teams Win City League Games
In the City league games played at City park last night, Los Alamitos-Parkway Inn nine retained their hold on first place in the cities' national league by downing Koopman's Furniture 2 to 1 in a thrilling battle that wasn't decided until the sixth inning. In the second game of the night's double-header, Cypress V.F.W. broke a 5-to-5 tie in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the hustling "Cyclone" youngsters.
In the Parkway-Koopman game Bill Mattel, Parkway second baseman, drew a base on balls, advanced on Gabriel Vasquez' infield single, then scored as Raul Sanchez singled to right field. Koopman's Carrol Steele tied it up when he in turn drew a free pass and scored on an outfield error. "Pingq" Zamarripa led off with a single for Los Alamitos in the bottom half of the sixth. Bill Baca bunted and was safe when no one covered first. Gabriel Vasquez again singled to drive in the winning run. Koopmans put men on but couldn't score in the top half of the seventh.
Cypress V.F.W. collected but four base hits, yet they combined them with six walks, a hit batsman, and three "Cyclone" errors to cross the plate six times, which was exactly what they needed to win. "Chuek" Sanders scored the winning run in the seventh as he was safe on a fielder's choice, advanced and scored on a wild pitch and two passed balls. W.E.Jeff series led Cypress at the plate with two of their four hits.
The "Cyclone" nine garnered eight hits, three of these being by Dave Garcia. Ben Lamas collected two in four trips to the plate. Joe Juarez tripled in the sixth and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the ball game. Garcia opened the seventh with a single but was forced at second. Aranda filed to left and Joel Esparaza grounded out, third to first, to end the game.

REPUBLICANS OF ORANGE COUNTY!
Some Candidates have large campaign funds; all have the eager desire to be elected. One advertises he was twice in the State Assembly but never mentions defeat for re-election to that office or defeat for City Council of Santa Ana-in 1947!
Another declined to state his party affiliation until forty days before filing for Congress.
DO YOU REALIZE a Vote for a San Diego County Man is a VOTE for that County to have TWO Congressmen and Orange County NONE? Reason: Because San Diego County has another district all within its borders!
Do not be confused by last-minute claims of Candidates.
Nominate a Man who has the experience and the qualifications to serve you honestly, faithfully and ably—a Man who has practiced law for thirty years, who knows the ways of Congressmen, Judges and Politicians and can get things done for YOU.
