Katie Lee’s Haunting New Song Has a Lilt That Sticks in Mind
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD—Combine such talents as acting, singing, guitar playing, songwriting, and real charm and beauty and you have the ingredients for a top performer. That is Katie Lee, one of America’s foremost singers. Yes, Katie is the gal who wrote one of the top hits of today, “Nine Hundred Miles” which was recently recorded by Gordon MacRae, and made an immediate hit. The song has a very haunting lilt to it which sticks in one’s mind.
Maybe “wrote” isn’t the word because Katie actually admits she stole it. You see, Katie has a repertoire of more than 300 folk songs which she has gathered through extensive research. “Nine Hundred Miles” is a song she modernized in tune and for which she wrote new lyrics.
She hasn’t recorded the song commercially herself yet, but she should! Her delivery and style is excellent, she knows the song and its background, can put that “feel” into the haunting melody, and in general, would be a gold mine for some recording company with this one.
Katie has been a radio star for some time, having appeared extensively on the “Railroad Hour” and others. She has proven herself in the television field too with several very successful appearances, the latest being with Ralph Edwards (now on a summer hiatus).
TELE-TIPS... will emcee the new a Lifetime” TV bowls in on KECA... and singer Tommy guestar with Peter and Mary Healy on the Family” show ($) at 8:30... world’s top divers w/the “Olympic Aquing In Our Times” (11) at $... Katie has been a radio star for some time, having appeared extensively on the "Railroad Hour" and others. She has proven herself in the television field too with several very successful appearances, the latest being with Ralph Edwards (now on a summer hiatus).
A native of Tuscon, Ariz., Katie was graduated from the University of Arizona. Her first public appearance was as a solo dancer in a Junior High school operetta and from then on, she turned her sight to the entertainment world.
Katie played the ukulele for her own enjoyment during her college days, but when she went to Mexico in 1943, she bought a guitar and learned to play Mexican and Guatemalan rhythms. She stayed there a year and a half, collecting Mexican and Incan historical songs. When she returned to Arizona, she began her search for western folk music. In those days it was all a hobby with her... now, it's a serious business.
Most of her time now is taken with preparing a new show she wants for herself in TV, but if there's any spare time left—she's strictly an outdoor girl.
DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ... Figures for the recent Southern California cerebral palsy telethon are now well over $300,000. A great deal of credit should be given to the entire organization on this

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY ... There's one nice thing about having good reproductions of paintings instead of originals. You don't have to keep lending them to museums. Copyright, 1952, by Universal Radio and TV Features Syndicate.
COMMUNIST KILLINGS REPORTED
SRINAGAR, Kashmir (P) — Ali Beg, a Kazak leader who fought communism in Chinese Turkestan for 15 years, claims that since 1936 more than eight million Moslems have been killed by communists in Chinese Sinkiang.
Since communist occupation of Sinkiang large bands of Kazaks—anti-communist resident of sinkiang — have fought their way across Tibet and into Kashmir, where the Kashmiri government has given them refuge.
