MORRIS 5-28 1--AND IF YOU DO NOT KNOW BY RETURN TV-RADIOLOGIC New Type Western Show Featured On Columbia Broadcasting Chain By TOM E. DANSON HOLLYWOOD—I finally caught up with "Gunsmoke," CBS Radio's new Western adventure drama, and I'm happy to report it's a new kind of cowboy show for radio. I caught the show on the car radio the other evening, and actually got so absorbed I went by my turn by about six blocks. It's heard on Saturdays and is not in any sense a kids show. It's written and acted for an adult audience, with all of the elements of suspense, drama and excitement that you'll find in any top notch show. In other words, because it's Western doesn't mean it's corned up. Actually, "Gunsmoke" bears as little relation to the average radio or TV Western as great dramatic films like "The Gunfighter" or "The Oxbow Incident" have to the average cowboy movie. Hero of this new drama is a United States marshal named Mark Dillon, who operates in the wild territory west of Dodge City, Kan. Dillon is a man with a rough job to do—riding herd on the killers and spoilers who infest the territory—and he does it. Sometimes it involves killing. There is only one way to handle the killers, Dillon says, and that is with the smell of gun. TELE-TIPS... WE MUST FIND WHATVER IS SLOWING OUR SPEED OR WELL LOSE THE FLEET! AND YOU DON'T SEE ANY SPACE HAUNTS, DO YOU? I-I DON'T SEE OUR FIRST REPAIR SOUND EITHER! HERO of this new drama is a United States marshal named Mark Dillon, who operates in the wild territory west of Dodge City, Kan. Dillon is a man with a rough job to do—riding herd on the killers and spoilers who infest the territory—and he does it. Sometimes it involves killing. There is only one way to handle the killers, Dillon says, and that is with the smell of gun smoke. Hence the title of the series. But it is a conclusion that Mark Dillon is reluctant to make. Dillon would much rather bring the killers in alive, and let them stand trial in the full tradition of justice. But, most of the time, the badmen don't play that way, so Mark Dillon is forced to use their rules. And his encounters with the outlaws frequently end in the smell of gunsmoke. Oddly enough, the radio actor who plays this hero of the plains is a man by the name of Bill Conrad. And Bill Conrad has built an entire career in radio and motion pictures playing villains. So this time he's still behind the gun, but he's got a badge pinned on his chest. Once in a while he finds it hard to keep the snarl of a killer out of his voice when he's supposed to read a line in the firm but just tones of Mark Dillon, United States marshal. DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ... I get a big "boot" out of Hy Gardner's recent Look Mag article on Johnnie Ray where he says, "When he's at his best, he's at his worst, closely resembling a juvenile delinquent confessing to a horrible crime in the presence of his broken-hearted mother. But is this entertainment?" DIAL-LITES ... Hickok" drives a stagecoach adventure called "The Whip" during the show KHJ at 5:30 ...
