LOS ANGELES PHONE 4070 For all your Stationery Needs BACKLOG — Southern California experienced a minor boom with the discovery of gold in 1848 and the subsequent gold rush when the demand for cattle and brandy brought momentary prosperity to the rancheros. But the boom was unjustified and by 1867 Los Angeles, San Diego and Santa Barbara were "tossil towns" down on their heels. Anaheim, San Bernardino and El Monte were in the early state of development. The Mormon colony of San Bernardino; Anaheim's German colony and El Monte, the western end of the overland trail, were prospering as agricultural communities. In 1866 Los Angeles had a population of 8700; Santa Barbara had 5000 people and San Diego, 2300. Anaheim was a town of 2000 then. By 1872, following the completion of the transcontinental railroad to San Francisco, Los Angeles had grown to 16,400; Santa Barbara had 6400 souls and San Diego had 7359 inhabitants. TRANSITION—The competition of the railroad to Los Angeles in 1876 also brought a change in the Southland. Los Angeles county ended two weeks in which to answer charges tried against him... Seal Beach made draw poker legal through a special city ordinance as an emergency affecting the public peace, health and safety of its citizens... Sportswise, Larry Kirchman was second in the state track-and-field meet. Bob Sucess of Huntington Beach was fifth in the 880... The Fresno Rockets beat Mrs. Berna Hagan, of Orange, 1-0, in a four-and-a-half hour, 23-inning softball game which ended at 1 p.m... Orange beat Anahi in baseball, 16-3... Dave Sommers, Dick Hammer and Bob Ferguson picked up points for Fullerton as LACC took the state jay-coe track title... Those were the news items of a year ago. Remember? 40th Commander Praised by Gen. James Van Fleet WITH THE U.S. 40TH INFANTRY DIVISION (P) — Maj. Gen. Daniel H. Hudelson, commander of the 40th Division, received personal congratulations from Gen. James A. Van Fleet today. The Eighth Army commander praised not only other outgoing California National Guardsmen for their "splendid performance while serving with the Eighth Army in Korea." The army commander's letter expressed the admiration of Van Fleet and his staff for the "efficiency and professional competence displayed by the Guardsmen who have been the backbone of the 40th Division." "In the near future," Van Fleet said, "most or the National Guard personnel or the 40th Division will be leaving the bay fast to return home under the army's phase-out program." "Before they leave, I want to thank them." The four-star commander said the departing Camornians have accomplished each mission with an enthusiasm and spirit reflecting the high caliber leadership provided by your officers and non-motorized re-wound. By 1872, following the completion of the transcontinental railroad to San Francisco, Los Angeles had grown to 14,400; Santa Barbara had 6,000 souls and San Diego had 7359 inhabitants. TRANSITION—The competition of the rauroad to Los Angeles in 1876 also brought a change in the Southland. Los Angeles county (of which Orange county was then a part) had been the queen of the cow counties. The colonization and the breaking up of the vast ranches, introduced grapes as the first substitute for cattle and sheep. Wine was the Southland's main export item. Anaheim alone exported a million and a quarter gallons of the best wines. There were no oranges in Southern California in 1876, though bee-keeping was a bonanza in the '70s. APIARISTS — Although history fans to make any special note of the bee culture in and about Anaheim, it is almost certain that many Anaheimers of that day followed the pursuit. It was possible to start with a hundred stands or colonies of bees in October. These would rapidly increase to 400 stands and by July of the following year, a beekeeper could ship 40,000 pounds of the finest honey. Bees were easy to keep. There was considerable wild grass and plants from which the bees could collect nectar. WATER — One of the problems of a semi-arid country is to provide an adequate supply of water. THE four-star commander said the departing Camornians have "accomplished each mission with an enthusiasm and spirit reflecting the high caliber leadership provided by your officers and noncommissioned officers." "This must be a source of great pride to you personally." Van Fleet asked Hudelson to convey to his officers and men the appreciation of myself and my staff on their spirited performance while serving with the Eighth Army in Korea." "My sincerest congratulations to the 'Sunburst' Division's National Guarosmen for another mission accomplished," Van Fleet concluded. SHOP FRIDAY NIGHT 'TIL 9 In the early days, water wasn't much or a problem, as the rivers flowed nearly the year around. It wasn't at all difficult to sink a well. In fact in 1876 there were 200 wells in the Santa Ana and San Gabriel valleys, where the first extensive agricultural developments — Anaheim, San Gabriel and Downey were prospering. POSTSCRIPT — The early development of Anaheim and its environs was largely due to a good supply of water, fertile soil and finally to transportation. Anaheim's future is secured, now that is it becoming the industrial heart of Southern California.
