DANSON HOLLYWOOD — First nighters here who attended Comedian Frank Fontaine's opening at Charlie Morrison's Mocambo last week, got a preview of what to expect when CBS radio's "Frank Fontaine Show" hits the airlines early next month, and from what this writer saw . . . it should be terrific. Fontaine was in better form than this columnist has ever seen him before, and the enthusiasm registered augers well for the success of his brand new radio show. His material is excellent, his delivery is skillful and his sense of mimicry is wonderful. If his writers are up to his talent, you should be hearing him in a starring role on radio for a long time. And, with Al Schwartz and Si Rose signed to do the scripting, there should be little to worry on that score. Both are old hands at turning out radio comedy. Fontaine had been around the entertainment world a long time—he started in vaudeville when he was 8 — but it wasn't until Jack Benny caught his act a couple of years ago and signed him for a guest appearance that Frank jumped into the big time. After three guest shots with Benny, CBS programming executives decided that Fontaine was a first rate talent, and in October, 1950, signed him to an exclusive two year radio and television deal. He's got a new gardener care of his front lawn, and bet that the lawn will needing soon. TELE-TIPS . . . THOSE TWO LIMITIANS GAVE ME A SWELL IDEA! AND IT'S US NURSES WHO'LL BE GIVING YOU YOUR DRILLING ORDERS, SEE? AT EASE! BE IN ANOTHER KIND OF UP TODAY, CADET - YOU'VE JUST HAD OPERATION AND IT'S US NURSES WHO'LL BE GIVING YOU YOUR DRILLING ORDERS, SEE? AT EASE! HE SEEMS BE ASKING TO COME RIGHT UP! GIVE ME THE MONEY TO GET ALL THESE THINGS! After three guest shots with Benny, CBS programming executives decided that Fontaine was a first rate talent, and in October, 1950, signed him to an exclusive two-year radio and television contract. He was used for guest appearances with Benny and other popular CBS shows, and in the meantime, the work started on a format that would star him in his own comedy show, with the show now due to start soon. Frank started in show business at the age of 8, sitting on his father's lap with a pop song "Sonny Boy." He became a performer in his own right when he won first place as a singer on the Major Bowes Amateur Hour, and went on tour with the troupe. He met, fell in love with an acrobatic dancer by the name of Alma Claire Wakham, and married her before he was 17. And Frank isn't kidding wheh he opens the show telling about his eight children, for it's true! DOWN TV-RADIO ROW ... And speaking of Franks ... Sinatra's opening at the Coconut Grove last week played to a full house but afforded poor entertainment. He can't deliver lines, and his voice is very ordinary. The musical background as delivered by Axel Stordahl was wonderful. DIAL-LITES ...
