That was the news that made the headlines last year. Remember? FORGOTTEN—A year ago Anaheim and all of Southern California buzzed with excitement. A pretty, 10-year-old child had been lured away from a Saturday matinee, May 19, 1951, by a man and had completely vanished. More than 500 men joined the posse that combed every inch of the territory in and around Buena Park. Planes and horsemen searched the hills, dales and gullies. Henry Ford McCracken, 24-year-old convicted sex offender, was taken into custody. From the beginning he was a hot suspect. Smudged fingerprints on the car be borrowed, strands of blonde hair and blood splotches added to the damning evidence investigators had against their suspect. The accused man had been released from the county jail two weeks before—on May 6—after serving a six-month sentence for failing to register as sex-offender. After going over the Buena Park area with a fine tooth comb, the search for the body of the child switched to the vicinity of Orange. Planes, helicopters and a ground crew of nearly 800 civilians and Marines concentrated on this search. All the while the search was going on, McCracken denied any knowledge of the child or her well being. Sheriff James Musick returned from Oregon in the third day of the intensive search to direct the volunteers. On May 24, 1951, the search suddenly ended. The remains of the sex-maniac's victim was found in an isolated, shallow grave in Live Oak Canyon near El Toro. The following day, McCracken was arraigned before the County Grand jury. Horrified witnesses collapsed at the initial hearing at which Joe Scherman, ranger, told of discovering the grave while following a lead furnished by Charles Martinez. McCracken was indicted for murder. A lengthy trial followed. The crime was, indeed, a blotch on the history of Orange county and the failure of the first trial jury to do its duty is another nightmare that will take years to live down. McCracken is in San Quentin, convicted of one of Orange county's most heinous crimes. Those of us who sympathized with the little girl's family at the time and those of us who resolved that such a thing should not happen again, should hang our heads in shame. Nothing has been done during the year that has come and gone to prevent the reoccurence of such a tragedy.
