Several Hours of Work May be Spent Creating One-Minute TV Commentary
By TOM E. DANSON
HOLLYWOOD — Last week I had the opportunity of talking with Frank P. Bibas, head of the motion picture department of the McCann Erickson agency, whose department turns out between three and four hundred commercials on film each year. As the conversation progressed, some amazing facts and figures came to light regarding the production of these short one minute selling messages.
Frank estimates that he spent more than a half million dollars on these last year, and indicated that this year, his expenditure would be even more. He went on to say that after a script for a commercial is written, researchers then analyze every word. There must be, he added, a definite reason for every move the actors make, for there are 1440 individual still pictures in a one-minute film spot, and each is precious.
The art department designs the sets and backgrounds, and many conferences are held to decide the proper merchandising display, musical background etc. Preparation for a short film of this kind frequently starts six months before the actual shooting.
Let's take just one of these commercials — a wave preparation using lovely Barbara Britton as the model — as an example. THE art department designs the sets and backgrounds, and many conferences, are held to decide the proper merchandising display, musical background etc. Preparation for a short film of this kind frequently starts six months before the actual shooting.
Let's take just one of these commercials — a wave preparation using lovely Barbara Britton as the model — as an example. The hair styling worn by Miss Brton must not be too complicated, thus, seven different hair styles were designed and Barbara posed for each in advance of the shooting.
When the final choice was made, a full sized production crew was on hand at the Hal Roach studio, with Roland Reed Productions in charge of the actual shooting. There were grips, carpenters, electricians, sound men, a make-up woman, and naturally, a hair dresser. These was a producer, a director, assistant directors, prop men and a trained nurse. Because of careful and intensive preparation, everything moved like clockwork.
About this time, Barbara walked in and joined us in conversation. "We worked faster than when we are shooting a full-sized movie," she said. "If movies were produced with similar speed and precision, I'm sure they would save money and achieve greater action," she added.
The one-minute commercial, plus two 20-second spots were shot in eight hours. For this, Barbara pocketed a nice check for $1000.
