In a message to Southern California growers, this observation was voiced by Robbins Russell, general manager of Mutual Orange Distributors, who has just returned from a tour of the Florida citrus producing areas. "We have heard of a great deal," Russel continued, "about the huge acreages under single management in Florida. They do exist and are beautiful to behold. Nevertheless, I was repeatedly told by those in position to know that the average holding in Florida today is less than 30 acres." It was interesting to note, Russel said, that Florida's best orange, the Valencia, is the most expensive to produce. In a study of production costs, the California citrus man learned that orchards admittedly well above the average in efficiency and yield accounted about 36 cents per 80 pound box for 1950-51 production costs. Even in such a limited study, it was noted that production costs varied from 15 to 79 cents a box, depending on yield and variety. A cost of 85 cents per 55 pound field box is the generally accepted figure for California production. Florida orchards with low production costs do not irrigate, fertilize, or prune, Russel learned.
