CALDECOTT'S bill, while not exactly a compromise measure, turned out to have the effect of such legislation. For it was adopt-ed without fanfare in the middle of a bitter battle between cities and counties over the fringe area problem. Representatives of the cities were attempting to force through a measure which would have required taxation of the fringe areas, regardless of the services given, while the counties were attempting to have the legislature adopt another fringe area bill permitting consolidation of services. Both bills were referred to committees for further study and investigation; but there was virtually no opposition to the Caldecott measure. ATLANTIC CITY — Dreams come in four different packages, the American Psychiatric Association was told today. And, said Dr. Iago Galdston of New York, psychistrists should pay more attention to these differences in the "structure" of dreams—as an aid in treating the mentally ill. For many years, he said in a prepared address, much emphasis has rightly been placed on the "contents" of dreams—but practically no attention has been paid to the form, or stage setting, of the dream. Saying that in the case of the mentally ill the dream structure is closely correlated with the patient's personality and the type of his mental disturbance, Dr. Galdston listed these four patterns for dreams in general: 1. The dream that has a "consistent story." 2. The dream that is presented as a "montage"—a serial form of disjointed episodes, yet staged upon a consistent background. 3. The "meandering" dream, where there is a constant shift in terrain and lots of inconsistency. 4. The "amorphous," or shapeless dream—where the characters are dim and vague and don't make much sense at all. He said there is opportunity for utilizing these differences in diagnosing a patient's illness, and following the progress of treatment. "Basically," he added, "each patient dreams his dreams in his own unique pattern, yet, within that pattern there is possible TODAY'S CROSS-WORD PUZZLE QUER YOUR RESTIPATION Markable medical discoveries in McCoy's Norman can quickly conquer apocalypse and restore regal violence purging—no fuss—nothing to mix. Gen. Vernon E. Megee, newly appointed commanding general of the base, as principal speaker at the dinner starting at 7 p.m. Mrs. Julian P. Black, director of the Stanton Chamber of Commerce, has arranged a musical program to supplement the dinner music by the El Toro Marine Band. Miss Mildred R. Beuhler of Stanton will sing and dance; Nolan Blackman of Cypress will also be a vocal soloist, both being accompanied by Miss Marjorie Cranston of Anaheim. Miss Buehler, who attends Garden Grove High school, has won several radio and television contests and spent last year in Europe where she entertained extensively. Nolan Blackman of AUHS just won the Leo Carillo television amateur show competition and Anaheim's Talent Time first contest. Miss Cranston is studying music at Fullerton High School. For another session of the meeting, three Boston psychiatrists said not enough attention has been given to "cliques" among mental hospital patients as possible sources of both good and evil. Dr. S. Stephen Kegeles and two colleagues said that doctors, nurses and attendants rarely take into consideration the possible significance of "ward organization" among the patients. Yet, they said, such "cliques" can lead, on the one hand, to gang wrecking of furniture, or mass suicide," and, on the other hand, to drawing lone wolf patients into closer social relationships with other patients. "It is surmised," they said, "that many unexplained relapses and recoveries could be explained through understanding the informal ward organization stemming from patient leadership and clique membership."
