Poppy Days May 23 and 24
May days are poppy days, where the little red crepe paper poppy the memorial flower of the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary, makes its appearance on the streets of Anaheim, an annual event since 1921.
This year May 23 and 24 will be observed as poppy days with members of the American Legion Auxiliary offering the little red flower to every man and woman.
There is no set price asked; gifts are voluntary. Only the heart of the giver judges the amount.
Poppies are hand made by disabled veterans in hospitals and workshops, for which they receive three cents apiece. The work provides interesting employment during the winter months and is a great aid in keeping their minds as well as their hands, occupied, thus aiding in occupational therapy treatment.
When you buy a poppy, you not only support the veteran work project, but, by wearing it, you remember and honor those who made the supreme sacrifice. That is the spirit of the poppy.

Chapel Services Tuesday Unite
Jo Ann Lakeman - Robert Hicks
Miss Jo Ann Lakeman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd L. Lakeman of W. North st., was a lovely bride Tuesday evening as she repeated vows with Robert N. Hicks, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maynard Hicks of La Habra at the chapel altar in Capilla de San Antonio.
The Rev. C. I. Andrews officiated at the nuptials, witnessed by 150 relatives and friends. Lighted tapers with arrangements of stocks, larkspur and gladiolus decorated the altar.
Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a ballerina length jacketed gown with detail of imported lace over nylon net and satin. Her fingertip veil was accented with matching lace and was held by a heart shaped crown of seed pearls. Stephanotis with shattered carnations centered a white orchid in her bouquet.
Matron of honor, Mrs. William Hutton, an aunt of the bride, wore yellow lace over taffeta with a lace hat and carried mixed garden flowers in a basket.
Junior bridesmaid, Dianne Louise Hutton, wore yellow nylon dotted swiss over taffeta and carried a basket of flowers.
Richard D. Hagle of Long Beach was best man and ushers were Donald Fahrney and Marvin C. Erickson.
William Fackiner, soloist, was accompanied by Mrs. A. F. Faust in the selections, "Thine Alone" and "Lord's Prayer."
Reception followed the service. Mrs. Lakeman wore a gold linen suit with black accessories and purple accents in her flowers and hat, with a delphinium corsage. The bridegroom's mother wore poudre blue silk shantung with navy blue accessories and a wrist corsage of shattered carnations. Guest book was in charge of Mrs. Marvin Erickson.
For travelling, the new Mrs. Hicks wore a pearl gray sharkskin suit with navy accessories and the orchid from her bouquet.
Following a short honeymoon trip, the couple will establish residence in Madison, Wisconsin, where the bridegroom is stationed with the Air Force. He is a graduate of Fullerton High school and Junior college and his wife was graduated from Anaheim High school and Fullerton Junior college.
