DANSON HOLLYWOOD — I understand that the Cass County Boys went along on the annual ride of Los Rancheros Visitidores this year. It was eight days in the saddle with campfire entertainment at night—a most appropriate, it seems to me, occupation for the trio who hail from Texas and wear sombreros with on-the-back-of-the-head ease. What started me thinking was the still very vivid memory of the trek I made out to the Beverly Hailis Hotel not so long ago. One of the few places in Southern California where a man icebogged to slip on a coat even in warm weather, the hotel is one of the more swank establishments. And why get gussied up for that day? To see the Cass County Boys in the Palm Terrace Room. All of which seems to indicate that the trio is a pretty mobile unit or, more important, perhaps, that the so-called Western motif in music as they play it is pretty grass roots at that. The Boys were so popular, they were recalled within six weeks and held over. Another interesting thing about the Cass County Boys is that they're never idle, or "at liberty" as the old show-business trades used to lament it. Besides appearing weekly in Gene Autrys' "Melody Ranch" radio program, going with the cowboy star on alt his tour makes all his opinions. TELE-TIPS ... It's Fred Martin, the accordionist, who actually claims Cass County, Texas. Jerry Scroggins, the guitarist, and Bert Dodson, the bass fiddle player, met up with Fred in a Dallas station about a decade ago. When the station manager asked Fred to fill in for a 10-minute lull between programs once, he gave the high sign to the other two boys and they improvised so happily and got more fan mail than the scheduled shows. Later, Autry spotted the trio and put the dotted line in front of them. "Well, we'll be dee-lighted," said Fred, "when Bert, here, gets back from an 'engagement' with Uncle Sam."
