WHITE Gasette Home Economist What sex eats more sensibly? Studies show that men are better fed than women—on the average. Imagine that! This really does not detract from the woman's role of family nutrition expert. It means that it is high time we gals practiced what we have been preaching. Often at breakfast time, we get so involved in the rush of preparation, urging the youngsters to eat, and then getting them off to school that we end up with mere toast and coffee. Lunch is usually hot or miss and some home-makers, fearful of gaining weight, skip the meal altogether. A habit of nibbling throughout the day stays hunger but produces a diet low in basic nutritious food and leads to overweight. Bad habits, all of them, and ones which defeat the very aims homemakers set for themselves. Prolonged youth and beauty, boundless energy and vitality, supple muscles and the perfect figure all hinge on eating sensibly and well. TO MARKET, TO MARKET Eating is for everybody, you know. The best way to replace bad habits with good habits is to take yourself in hand, starting with the way you fill your market basket on the weekly shopping spree at the grocery store. The best way to replace bad habits with good habits is to take yourself in hand, starting with the way you fill your market basket on the weekly shopping spree at the grocery store. Be good to yourself, mother. Milk is not only for children. You need a pint per day. If you are counting calories, look into the non-fat milk on your grocer's shelves. It's a fine source of protein and its calcium and vitamins will prolong the prime of your life. "Eat" milk in puddings, soups, creamed dishes and cheese. Eggs are an excellent buy right now. An egg a day will keep the doctor away more surely than the proverbial apple. For a stick to the ribs breakfast that will get you through a morning of heavy housework, treat yourself to bacon and eggs. Round it out with a citrus fruit juice or a half of grapefruit, and the coffee will taste better than it did to the plain accompaniment of toast alone. Reducing or no, you need two tablespoons of butter or fortified oleomargarine per day and at least two servings of enriched or whole-grain bread or cereal. See how this influences your marketing list? Do choose the cereal you like, the fruit juice you prefer, and a dozen large, really fresh eggs. FRUITS AND VEGETABLES The average family of moderate means can afford the necessary two or more servings daily of fruits and the two of vegetables besides potato that an adequate diet requires—and in fact cannot afford to skimp on this, the best and in some cases the only source, of all-important vitamins. The hostess, Mrs. Roy Fierce, used a yellow color theme with an arrangement of tallisman roses centering the table. The ways and means committee made final plans for the box social and square dance at the John Brooks' home, 9432 Hillview st., the evening of May 17. More Magnolia Cook Books will be assembled with the first printing of 60 sold out and many advance orders on file. Copies may be had by contracting Mrs. Edmund Cook of Starr st., publicity chairman. The June pcinic will be at Irving health's sake and the sake of your figure, shy away from starchy casseole dishes and plan a substantial serving of meat every day. You will find that you will spend fewer hours in the kitchen this way too. "Oh, my poor food budget," you groan. If you are wise, you will not waste much time in groaning. You may want to economize elsewhere and give up the questionable practice of skimming on food. You will surely want to watch for advertised food specials and patronize the money-saving food sales like the giant food sale now in progress at Alpha Beta stores—hundreds of items at bargain bazaar prices. And since such a large portion of the food dollar goes for meat these days, you will want to bone up on cooking methods which give you the most servings per pound so that you can serve steak occasionally, as well as appetizing and vine park on May 29.
