The way it goes...
The following literary lament—an old one but always good—was received by an Oakland publication. What it says may not be new but very true.
"Dear Sir: In reply to your request to send a check I wish to inform you that the present condition of my bank account makes it almost impossible. My shattered financial condition is due to federal laws, state laws, city laws, county laws, mother-in-laws, brother-in-laws and outlaws.
"Through these laws I am compelled to pay a business tax, amusement tax, school tax, gas tax, sales tax, liquor tax, tobacco tax, income tax, poll tax, excise tax and thumb tax. Even my brains are taxed.
I am overtaxed and am required to get a business license, car license, hunting license, fishing license, truck license, marriage license and dog license.
"My business is so governed that it is not easy for me to find out who owns it. I am inspected, disrespected, rejected, examined, re-examined, informed, mis-informed, required, summoned, commanded, demanded and compelled until I provide an inexhaustible supply of money for every known need of the human race.
"Simply because I refuse to donate to something or other, I am a meritorious but if I give liberally I'm doing it for show. If I die young the world has lost a jewel, but if I live to a ripe old age I'm robbing the grave.
"I can tell you honestly that except for a miracle I could not enclose this check. The wolf at my door just had pups. I sold them and here is the money."

LORETO, B. C., Mexico — This job is really pretty good at times — especially when a Mexican fishing trip comes up. It starts out somewhat like a dream, after boarding a beautiful blue and yellow painted, luxuriously appointed, converted Navy PBY flying boat for a spot just 100 miles north of La Paz, Baja California, called Loreto.
This quaint little thatched-roof village of around 2000 natives is so located that only an airplane or boat can reach it, and as for the boat — one must first go to La Pax, with a long, slow ride as the result. Because of its inaccessibility, very few fishing enthusiasts of these Southern waters ever wet their line here ... and as for the fishing ... it's great!
Hosted by the Flying Sportsman club of Hollywood, owned by "Smith's Ed" Tabor, who got tired of radio and started this weakly project as a much more beautiful vocation, our gang was astounded to find comfortable quarters in newly built adobe collages, complete with deep well water (piped over 100 mila) showers with hot water comfortable beds and excellent for 1.
I never saw so many blue-eyed, blond Mexicans in my life. Made inquiry as to how this came about, and found out that an Englishman by the name of Davis made a boat stop here many years ago. Half the town now go under the name "Do-ves."
First call for fishing came at 5 a.m., with breakfast following at 5:30. Then at 6 o'clock, down

WASHINGTON — Congressman Frank Boykin, the gentleman from Mobile, who preaches "everything is made for love" but who practices "everything is made for loans," is facing a tough re-election fight next Tuesday in Alabama.
Never-eating and getting family loans from the RFC has he paired so worried about getting re-elected. Apparently, his recoupon in Washington is becoming pretty well known among the folks back home.
At any rate, the Congressman is flooding Mobile with publicity has peppered the countryside with billboards, is distributing an vertising blotters, advertisement emery wheels and has hired a helicopter which, descending near the ground, startles the public by booming a jingle out over a loud speaker entitled "Build with Boykin."
Frank seems to figure that he will take a lot of flinging and bellcording to make people forget how he pulled wires to keep two notorious tax chasers, Joe Mitchell and Sam Rippa, out of jail; also to forget how he got a $700,000 RFC loan for the Mobile paper company, after which he and his children turned up with 40 percent interest in the company.
Apparently he also wants voters to forget about the $300,000 RFC loan he got for the Stutts Lumber co., which purchased lumber from Boykin. Later, three members of the Thomasville, Ala., bank which benefited from this loan, were indicted.
Running against the "all is made for love" congressman are two candidates:
I never saw so many blue-cyeed, blood Mexicans in my life. Made inquiry as to how this came about, and found out that an Englishman by the name of Davis made a boat stop here many years ago. Half the town now go under the name "Do-ves."
First call for fishing came at 5 a.m., with breakfast following at 5:30. Then at 6 o'clock, down to the beach where, for Marlin fishermen, three large cruisers stood about 200 yards out in the deeper wafer, and half a dozen skiffs with outboard motors awaited the smaller game fishermen.
With a Mexican boatman, who couldn't understand a word of English, I had plenty of arm exercise trying to make my wants known as to where to trot, and how fast, or how slow to move. Plenty of Yellowtail, Canillo, Grouper and Sierra Mackerel was the end result.
A healthy tan, plenely of fish and a new outlook on life all came alight through the efforts of the well-known fish and game editor, and television personality, Frank Jaffray, who is most nightly on NBC-TV's Southern California outlet, KNBIL.
Frank's choice of this place certainly proves that he knows the spots for the best fishing, which he describes during his telecast.

IDENTITY SWITCH
Emilio S. Bautista, 52. Costa Messa farmer, was speeding his car down S. Main st., Santa Ana at 2:45 a.m. today, after colliding with a parked car at Third and Broadway. The front end of the car was stove in and the tires were nearly afire, from rubbing against a bent fender. He ignored a pursuing police siren, until crowded to the curb.
"Don't stop me," he complained to the officer. "I'm trying to catch that fellow who hit my car."
Apparently he also wants voters to forget about the $300,000 RF loan he got for the Stutts Lumber co., which purchased lumber from Boykin. Later, three members of the Thomasville, Ala., bank which benefited from this loan, were indicted.
Running against the "all is made for love" congressman are two candidates:
1. Joe Thompson, former prosecuting attorney from Butler, Ala., with an A-1 record, who many people think really defeated Boykin in the last primary. Later a vote fraud scandal showed that prostitutes and city machine ballot-stuffers voted as often as 21 times—as a result of which 16 ballot-box stuffers were given criminal sentences.
2. Ben Glover, who is many repsents in a second edition of Boykin and recently split from the city machine. Peter Crollich, cafe operator, who got 10 months in jail plus a $2000 fine for vote frauds, is one of Glover's energetic backers.
Glover seems to have about as much money to spend on election publicity as Boykin and a lot of people are wondering first where the money is coming from, second whether they will have a replica of Boykin in congress if Glover is elected.

Anaheim moved out in front by chalking up the first scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Herbel singled. Bishop attempted to sacrifice and got on on a wild toss and Herrera singled to score both.
In the third Huntington Beach drew a walk, a fielder's choice and an out at second, another walk, and a single to load up the bases. Colonist hurler Dick Ramena then walked in a run, and Coach John Wallin sent in southpaw Val Wiethorn to put out the blaze by fanning the next batter.
With Ramella back on the mound in the fourth, the Oilers went to town to wrap-up the ball game as a walk, a sacrifice, another walk and a single scored one run to tie up the game at 2-2. Then with two away a blooper single got away from Anaheim short stop George Bishop to score two runners. A center field single scored one more before the side was retired, putting Anaheim behind 2-5.
After two scoreless innings, the Oilers scored their final run in the seventh and final inning after Catcher Ed Herrera dropped a pop-up, at home plate, the runner got to second on a sacrifice, to third on a single and was tagged out at home on a beautiful throw from the outfield by John Steinborn. Another single scored the final run.
In their half the seventh Anaheim scored two runs as Herrera got on on a base-on-balls and got to third on a wild throw. Roberts singled to score him and on errors and a wild pitch came home unassisted. With two men on Herbel fanned to wind up the game.

to get ex-Sen. Claude Pepper to run against him in the current primary.
The overture came from Smathers' close friend, Dick Danner, who telephoned Pepper's close friend John Montgomery to say: "We want you to know that if Glaude wants to run against Holland he could count on about 200 Smathers leaders to support him."
"How about some money also?" asked Montgomery.
"Well, there'd be some of that too," Danner replied. "We figure we'd better spend some money now than a lot more money four years from now if Pepper runs against Smathers."
He had reference to the fact that ex-Senator Pepper is considered one of the smartest vote-getters in Florida, even though he was defeated by Smathers two years ago.
This message was conveyed to Pepper by Montgomery, but Pepper decided not to run this year against Holland. He hasn't decided yet, however, whether he will run against Senator Smathers four years from now.
Track Stars To San Diego For Meet
The cream of Anaheim high school's '32 track and field squad jump into "big league" competition tomorrow as they head for the San Diego State track for preliminaries of the CIF, southern section, track championships.
Despite the fact that Landon Carter, Orange flash, will also compete in the meet, it appears unlikely that he'll tangle with his arch-rival, Anaheim's Larry Kirchman in the 440. Next meeting of the pair will come either May 10 at Chaffey in the semifinals or May 17 at Huntington Beach.
Coach Sam Keith indicated this morning he'll probably take a six-man team southward tomorrow—four men who qualified at last week's league finals and either one or two alternates.

Unbeaten Mann Beats George W. By 11-6 Count
Horace Mann's "A" team remained unbeaten in league competition yesterday as they rolled over George Washington's "A" team 11-6. But it took a big sixth inning to do the trick.
Horace Mann started things off in the first inning. Acosta struck out, Gary Thornton struck out, and then with two away, Billy Larson singled, Lupe De Le Cruz tripled, Robert Godoy was safe on an error by the catcher, when he dropped the third strike. Shirk singled, but was picked off of first base by pitcher Hatfield.
Again in the third inning Horace Mann scored three runs. Gary Thornton was safe on an error, Billy Larson had a fielder's choice, Lupe De La Cruz was out on an infield grounder, Godoy Walked, and Shirk tripled.
In the fourth inning Washington got three runs back. Dick Tremble singled, Hatfield struck out, Danny Leos singled; Jess Hurtado singled, Jose Penido walked, and Ronquillo was hit by Pitcher Godoy.
In the fifth inning they again scored three runs to tie the ball game up. Fisher was hit by the pitcher, Farless walked, Dick Tremble singled, Hatfield was out short to first, Danny Leos singled, Jess Hurtado singled, Jose Penido walked. At this time Billy Larson was brought in from short stop to pitch. He struck out Arciñag, Ronquillo, and got Fisher on a pop fly to the infield.
With the score tied, Horace Mann got to Washington's pitcher for five runs in the sixth inning. The big blow of the inning was a booming double off the bat of Billy Larson.
