For Results and Quick Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER ... my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.—Ias. 165:5. BYGONES—History repeats itself. Last year headlines proclaimed how thousands were homeless in Iowa and Illinois as the Mississippi left its course. Britain's Socialist government tottered. Raymond Thompson and Daniel Alice were warming up their hostless carriages for the annual 107-mile trek for autos of 1915 vintage or older. Thirteen were injured in county traffic, including P. M. Martinez and Max Gilbert Mendoza Hernandez. Death claimed Mrs. Mildred Updyke, 67, an Anaheimer for 32 years. The Neil Bollangers announced the arrival of an heir. ... and a year ago the Buena Park Lynx beat Cuiver City, 8-1. Remember? SHORTSTORY — A party of well-known Anaheimers went on one of those fishing expeditions to the Colorado. Did they catch anything? You bet: colds... Local Swimmers In Newport Meet Bobby Kimoshita, see AUHS tankman who has already twice cracked the school B breast stroke records, goes after the school varsity breast stroke record tomorrow afternoon as the school's swimming and diving team dives into the Sunset League preliminary swim matches to be held at the Newport Harbor high pool. Coach Bill Hunstock reports the rapidly improving splashman will make his debut as a varsity member tomorrow and on the basis of a practice swim yesterday, clocked at better than a second ahead of the school record, appears ripe for a record. The swim meet, the finals of which are slated for Thursday afternoon in the same pool at 2:30, will also highlight a duel between the Colonist's Al Clayes, record breaking varsity free-styler and Baird of Newport Harbor, who each has been clocked at 25.2 this season. They meet both in the 50 yard free style and the 100 yard free style, although Baird appears to have a fraction of a second edge in the longer event. After dropping every swim meet to league teams this season, the Colonist water-dogs have little hope of finishing high up in team totals because of the shallow depth of their ranks. Many SHORTSTORY — A party of well-known Anaheimers went on one of those lishing expeditions to the Colorado. Did they catch anything? You bet: colds. TIME PASSES—Every once in a while a fellow wonders what's become of certain people he once knew. Fristance there's Elvin Reckhorn, a personable Anaheimer who had the spark of genius that makes a man successful. And there was Ralph Chauppner, a slip-stick wizard, who learned to be an engineer. And John Jacob Heide, a jovial good-natured fellow who had a ready smile. Another Anaheimer we've lost track of is Wilbert Zahl. And Wilson Wood. And a lot of folks whose names you've forgotten over the passage of years. PERSONALITIES—There were fellows like Dove Melklejohn and Floyd Kenny who were very much part of the Anaheim scene, but they drifted away to carve their niche in their chosen professions. Opportunity sometimes knocks for Ciff Howell, the Radio-TV impresario. He's a "local boy" who made good in a highly competitive field. Which reminds me of another Anaheimer—the late Kermit Palmer—who was on the road to success as a cartoonist when death stilled his hand. MEMORY LANE—While we're in a reminiscent mood, we might ask if you all recall the old Fairyland theatre on the mainstem and how anxious folks were to see some of those ancient ticker productions? Why, old timers will tell you the crowds actually knocked down the doors to get in. Remember when newspapers used to perform an extra public service at world series time and at big boxing attractions. Paul Vissman had the job of reading blow-by-blow accounts of those pre-radio championship fights from the Plain Dealer office. After dropping every swim meet to league teams this season, the Colonist water-dogs have little hope of finishing high up in team totals because of the shallow depth of their ranks. Many events tomorrow, accordingly, will see no Anaheim entrants whatsoever. Entrants include: VARSITY Medley relay—Frank, Critchfield, Taylor. 50 yard free style—Claye, Hoffman, Summers, Taylor. 100 yard breast—Kinoshita. 200 yard free style—Wiggoner. 100 yard back stroke—Summers. 100 yard free style—Clayes. Diving Critchfield. Ind. medley—Critchfield, Frank. 4 man relay-Hoffman, Summers, Waggoner, Clayes. DEES 50 yard free style-Shinoda. 50 yard back stroke-Summers. 100 yard free style-Shinoda. CEES 50 yard free style-Starnes, Zava, Hund. 50 yard breast stroke-Deveney. 50 yard back stroke-Zava. 4 man relay-Zava, Deveney, Hund, Starnes. John Murdy Gives Views on Europe The Wild Red Berry Fan club almost met yesterday—not quite. Some of the fans were there, but no Red. The wrassler was scheduled to address the Anaheim Rotary club, but he didn't show. Red was ill; so his presentation was postponed a week. Instead, the Rotarians heard the forthright views of John A. Murdy, a candidate for the state senate, speaking on how well the United States is getting along in Europe. Mr. Murdy based his views on a trip he recently took abroad. The speaker said he could see where the Marshall Plan was making headway in some countries, and where it was proving doubtful in others. Stories of U.S. government corruption, which circulate abroad, have a negative effect on our position as a world leader, he said. He commented on the war's deeign has been clocked at 25.2 this season. They meet both in the 50 yard free style and the 100 yard free style, although Baird appears to have a fraction of a second edge in the longer event. Daystrom Promotes Ex-Fullerton Man Daystrom Incorporated, Elizabeth, N.J., has announced the appointment of Edward H. Hughes as manager of labor relations and plant security for Daystrom Instrument at Archbald, Penna, Gene Dahl, industrial relations director of the instrument division, made the announcement. Mr. Hughes has long been a member of the Daystrom family, having served as plant security and personnel director of American Type Founders in Elizabeth, and more recently as personnel director of Daystrom Furniture at Fullerton, California. In his new position, the instrument division being Daystrom's newest venture, he will develop a comprehensive program of employee's services embracing safety, security, and medical services, and will supervise the division's labor relations. About 46,000 European refugees from Hitlerism were admitted into Britain before World War II. LEGAL NOTICES now anxious folks were to see some of those ancient thicker productions? ... Why, old timers will tell you the crowes actually knocked down the doors to get in ... Remember when newspapers used to perform an extra public service at world series time and at big boxing attractions. Paul Vissanah had the job of reading blow-by-blow accounts of those pre-radio championship fights from the Plain Dealer office ... Although some might claim that the Halloween Parade, is Anaheim's most colorful event, a lot of folks remember the good old circus pea-rades in the old days when they had real live-steam caillopes, monstrous elephants, draft horses and the like. When a circus came to town it was an event... That was a long time ago when a boss and buggy—or probably a horse and wagon—trip to Anaheim Landing was an excursion. ... Remember the SP "skunk"—that outmoded (even then) gas-driven train that used to come through Anaheim when you were a kid? It never did seem to carry passengers. ... Remember those old muddy streets? The horse-drawn sprinkler wagons and how the kids used to cool off on a hot summer day? ... Remember those cobble stone streets in Ellay and those handsome draft horse teams that used to pull those resplendent beer wagons. Yeah, I thought so—that was before your time. NITECAPSULE — A politician is a fellow who is sincere in making promises he never intends to keep. An angry grouse makes a rumbling noise like a miniature freight train. Mr. Murdy based his views on a trip he recently took abroad. The speaker said he could see where the Marshall Plan was making headway in some countries, and where it was proving doubtful in others. Stories of U.S. government corruption, which circulate abroad, have a negative effect on our position as a world leader, he said. He commented on the war's destruction still evident in England, France, Italy, and Germany, and was impressed with the sharp-shooting of American bombardiers. He believes, however, that to help restore humanity and peace in the world we should emphasize the "Ten Commandments." He said his trip abroad convinced him that the world's problems must be settled through the interest and actions of the men and women of the world. Everybody, he said, should take more interest in their government and in the events which affect our foreign and domestic policies. Mr. Murdy's talk was scheduled day when the club found use; for a later date; however, yesterday at the last moment without a speaker, Mr. Murdy accommodated the group by moving forward his appearance. He was introduced by Walter Taylor. Richard W. Gay presided. WATCHTOWER MEET Use of the Santa Ana Municipal bowl and the nearby Community Center chibhouse, was granted by the Santa Ana city council last evening for the convention of the Watchtower Society of Jehovah's Witnesses, which will assemble between 5:00 and 6:00 delegates in Santa Ana Sept. 5, 6 and 7.
