Anaheim Gazetteer by JOHN S. NEUBAUER What is a man profiled if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul?—Matt. 26:26. BYGONES—Donald Lee Story, a 42-year-old Katella school district trustee, died of injuries of an auto accident near Garden Grove a year ago. Five others were hurt in the accident. Carmen Borego Correo made preparations to become Mrs. Eduardo Lopes. Death claimed three well known Anaheimers a year ago—Albert Meyer, 80, George Schmitt, 72, and Mrs. Helen DeCock, 79. That happened a year ago when motion picture moguls were considering a flicker career for pretty Paula Doretti. Remember? TREND—Earnie Moeller, and his Chamber of Commerce cohorts really established a trend with the Friday Nite shopping. Fullerton—and now Santa Ana—are following suit. MUSINGS—Jack Dutton, the man who parlayed a lot of rags to riches, was elected to the Fullerton city council. He's well qualified as he learned the parliamentarian procedure as an Anahi BOAT LIFTED FROM FALLS—a crane aboard an Army Engineer's barge lifts the 24-foot, The Chipook, off a rocky ledge in Willamette Falls at Oregon City, Ore. He was picked up after MUSINGS—Jack Dutton, the man who parlayed a lot of rags to riches, was elected to the Fullerton city council. He’s well qualified as he learned the parliamentarian procedure as an Anahi student body prey... Cecil Crew who owns a chunk of his son-in-law’s auto agency (Crowell Motor Co.) also took a seat on the Fullerton council table... Hugh (Squeekie) Warden, who is well known in and about Anaheim, is Fullerton’s new mayor... These are the kind of men who’ll bury the hatchet, forget the twin city rivalry and work together with Mayor Charlie Pearson and Anaheim city council to solve mutual problems. Flood control still rates top priority. FINIS—Now that the courts have been requested to supervise the dissolution of the Southern Counties Bank, another colorful chapter in Anaheim history is closed. Until the time that Wilson Phelps and Foster Lamm sold their interests to a metropolitan financial institution Anaheim had the distinction of being one of the few cities remaining with a “home owned” bank. CLIPPING—A customer sent us a yellowed clipping from an ancient (June 19, 1924) Fullerton News with a note: "Thought you might be interested in this. The rivalry of the so-called ‘showstring trip’ must have started a long time ago." ... It did. On July 4, 1887, to be exact. "Fullerton apparently is a magnet in so far as the Anaheim industrial section is concerned. Anaheim city trustees have completed plans for the annexation of 128 acres lying north of that (Anaheim) city and extending to Orangethorpe." "This election will bring into the Anaheim city limits the present 40-acre industrial tract... as well as properties of Launches Public Relations Move TAMPA, Fla.—A unique experiment designed to publicize Florida’s big citrus industry and to foster better internal relations, will be launched this week by the newly-created Citrus committee of the Florida Public Relations association, it was announced here by Chairman Walter J. Page. The committee, which became a part of the FPRA at the latter’s spring meeting, in Sarasota recently, brings together representatives of all segments of the citrus industry with the avowed aim of promoting “unity of purpose and coordinating efforts.” Page, who is public relations director of the Florida Citrus Exchange here, said the new committee was a “millestone” in the long and turbulent history of the citrus industry. "We recognized the vast advertising potential in the tons of promotional material being sent out of Florida by the state’s major tourist attractions," he said. "By working with public relations departments on these attractions and titing Florida citrus into such advertising, we feel that a tremendous outlet for citrus promotion will be established in support of the Florida Citrus commission's $2,500,000 advertising budget." JOB COMPLETED BERLIN (P)—Thefts of bicycles in front of the West Berlin police headquarters had prompted the chief to post a large sign reading: "You park here at your own risk." Today the sign and the bicycle stand were stolen. Lerton and Anaheim establishing Orangethorpe as the dividing line for the two communities. The agreement would limit annexation by that point. "It is said that the community of Orangethorpe is on the verge of disintegration. If this is so, it might not be a bad move to annex part of that district." That musty old newspaper clip LOS ANGELES (P)—The described “phantom gunman” gunned Sheriff’s officers intimate detainment today of the shooting of a four women, one of them tally. He was picked up after sixth attack missed. "When I shoot at women I excited and get a thrill out of even Charles Thomas, 29, hurt railroad switchman, told investigators. After he led them, step by step from place to place in the south east section where the gunmen occurred, one of the officers said: "I don’t see how he could know what he does about these cases unless he did the shooting." Lt. Floyd Rosenberg told a porter: "He showed us exactly what he stood when he says he shot. A couple of the places are only spots where anyone goes stood for the bullet to hit as it did. He couldn’t possibly have gotten such detail by reeling the newspapers." THERE WAS only one small dent. It came from George Larry ballistics expert in the sheriff’s crime laboratory. He said in January that the bullets in the cases came from as many different guns. Lacy stuck to his guns today. Thomas said he did all the shootings with a .22 rifle, and led our cops to where one was buried. Lacy conceded that all the slugs were .22s, but said rifling on those bullets made it impossible for them to have been fired from one wee on. So officers hunted other guns. Mumbling and nervous, Thomas as father of two children and whose wife, Harriet, is expecting a third, told deputies this story. Eight months ago he bought .22 rifle which he kept under the back seat of his car. His depressions began one night when his wife and children were visiting her mother and he felt "at low ends." "Fullerton apparently is a magnet in so far as the Anaheim industrial section is concerned. Anaheim city trustees have completed plans for the annexation of 128 acres lying north of that (Anaheim) city and extending to Orangethorpe. This election will bring into the Anaheim city limits the present 40-acre industrial tract... as well as properties of the Anaheim Beef company, the Crystal Chemical Company and the Holly Sugar Company. This annexation is an excellent move for Anaheim and is meeting with practically unanimous approval of all parties concerned. City Manager J. W. Price of Anaheim suggests that an agreement be reached between Fullerton and Anaheim establishing Orangethorpe as the dividing line for the two communities. The agreement would limit annexation by that point. "It is said that the community of Orangethorpe is on the verge of disintegration. If this is so, it might not be a bad move to annex part of that district." That musty old newspaper clipping truly has historical significance. It shows that Anaheimers were looking toward an industrial future even be fore Earnie Moeller arrived on the scene... The 1924 annexation of the 128-acre tract includes the Northrop plant which was completed last winter. J. W. Price must have had a vision of a brilliant future for Anaheim, but it was put until a few weeks ago that representatives of Fullerton and Anaheim sat down at a table as settled the boundary issue—partly at least. NITECAPSULE—The future is only a vision; the past is but a memory; but the present is real. DISTINCTIVE REDWOOD FENCES AT A PRICE YOU CAN AFFORD! Now you can have an enduring redwood fence! Teachers Ask More State Aid To Schools SACRAMENTO (P)—The California Teacher Association has taken the initial step to put a measure on the November ballot to increase state aid to school districts. The attorney general issued a title yesterday to a Constitutional amendment which would increase support money from a current 270 million dollars to more than 400 million dollars a year. The title was asked by Dr. Rex H. Turner, the president and other officers of the Teachers association. The measure can not go on the ballot unless 303,687 voters sign their names to initiative petitions before 120 days before the election. The increased support would be effective July 1, 1953. State Board of Equalization On Fence Between Wetts and Drys By HENRY C. MACARTHUR SACRAMENTO (CNS)—It is amusing at times to watch the state board of equalization jockey around to keep both the liquor interests and the drys happy, a task which could be classified as well-nigh impossible. Reilly's statement steps from an experiment made by a San Francisco church, which dispatched a group of teenagers after the shootings last fall of Mrs. On Fence Between Wet and Drys By HENRY C. The shootings last fall of Mrs. Lois May Kreutzner, 21; Ellen Bryant, 10; Mrs. Irma Megrdle, 40; and Mrs. Audrey Murdock, 42. Mrs. Kreutzner was shot in a telephone booth, Mrs. Murdock in her home, the others in front of their homes. Thomas was arrested after deputies noticed him hovering close as they investigated the firing of a 22 bullet into the home of Mrs. Joan Hiles, 22, his neighbor. The shot crashed through a window while she watched television and missed her by less than three feet. He was booked on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and felonious assault. A district attorney's side said formal charges will be filed later. LEGAL NOTICES (Pub. Anaheim Gazette, April 17, 24, May 1, 1952.) Overholt said when in California that this state's liquor laws are "next to the worst in the nation." He also said it is time the people of California start blocking the liquor lobby in the state legislature. The liquor lobby is headed by Arthur H. Practically however, when one of the four district board members wants an order issued, it usually is the custom of the other members to accede to his wishes. In any event, the matter must be brought before the board, but Reilly, it was learned, won't attend the April meeting, so it must be postponed to late May. After an order is proposed, it takes some time for it to become effective, even if the rest of the members of the board vote for the order. MEANWHILE, Grocery men drug stores and some self-service liquor stores are up in arms over the Reilly announcement. In the grocery store, such an order would require additional help for the operation of the liquor department, installation of additional refrigerators for cold beer, and probably some remodeling. A self-service drug store, and there are quite a few in the state, would be faced with some of the same problems. There are fewer self-service liquor stores as such.
