An interesting history surrounds Mr. Cowan who served as the "guinea pig" for insulin. In 1919 he survived four attacks of flu, but contracted diabetes. He was told there was no cure for him and his physician gave him three months to live. He lived on a ranch in Hemet at the time. They sold the ranch and began making the rounds of Southern California doctors, seeking help. Eventually they visited the Santa Barbara Diabetic clinic, where the head of the institution, Dr. W. D. Sansome, obtained all existing knowledge of insulin from Canada, then persuaded Cowan to be a "guinea pig" for tests, which included stuffing him with yeast, which blew him up, but did no good. Finally, the correct formula for insulin was developed and Cowan's sugar content was reduced to normal for the first time. Cowan said poor and wealthy diabetics at the clinic alike went into practically hysterical demonstrations of joy and gratitude when it was announced. He spent five years in the clinic, two being a guinea pig, three more being nursed back to health. Ell Lilly of the pharmaceutical supply firm, promised to keep him For Five Year Linda Irene Heyer, dear Mr. and Mrs. H. E. There will be more than 130 yachts jockeying for position within the tight confines of the two-mile starting line. The boats range in size from 23 feet to 85 feet, and may be observed clearly from the Corona del Mar-bluffs, but a boatside view is especially thrilling.
