9 Anaheim Gazette THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 1952 ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA HERO'S REWARD—Debbie Rector, 9, plants a kiss on the cheek of her cousin, Cub Scout Billy Steber, 10, for saving her life. Debbie, who cannot swim, fell from a raft into a 12-foot pool of water in Nashville, Tenn. Billy heard her scream and jumped into the pool and pulled her to safety the way he had been taught at the YMCA pool. Billy's only comment was, "I want you to learn to swim, Debbie." (Associated Press photo) It's Unsure What State President Slate Will Be BY MORRIE LANDSBERG SAN FRANCISCO UP—Californians didn't know for sure today just how many presidential slates will show up in the state's June 3 primary. The filing deadline last midnight narrowed the field down. It's two home state candidates in the Republican ticket and Senate Estes Kefauver of Tennessee in the only certainty on the Democratic. Harold E. Stassen, a loser in New Hampshire, Nebraska, Wash., consin and Illinois, is out. His backers failed to obtain the required 12,309 signatures. The talked of sueing to restore the man to the ballot. That makes it a two-way contest for 70 GOP convention votes between third-term Governor Ed Warren and Rep. Thomas H. Weldel (R-Calif), standing candidate for an anti-Warren faction. Warren will be hard to beat. It may take court action, however, to untangle the Democrat situation. Kefauver, who moves on to the Pacific Northwest today after campaigning in California, qualified without a hitch. Attorneys General Edmond G. Warbe hard to beat. by take court action, howuntangle the Democratic over, who moves on to the Northwest today after naming in California, qualihout a hitch. Attorney Edmund G. Brown, nominal candidate of the stranded Truman slate, lacked 482 signatures. Brown suffered a setback yesterday when San Francisco, Alameda, and San Mateo counties refused to certify his petitions. He needed 6658 signatures. The number required is based on the vote for Republican and Democratic candidates in the last election for governor. The county clerks held the Brown papers were defective in (1) naming only one delegate instead of a minimum of two, for the new (Los Angeles) 24th Congressional district; and (2) the proposed slate of 72 was shy four delegates. California is allowed 78 Democratic delegates but 16 have only a half-vote apiece or 68 in all. Secretary of State Frank M. Jordan said in Sacramento that Brown can seek a court order to compel the counties to certify the missing names. Kefauver supporters planned court action themselves if necessary to prevent Brown from getting on the ballot. Kefauver had one other potential opponent, Herbert C. Holdridge of Los Angeles, but the retired Army general did not have enough signatures to make it. A total of 18,094 names were filed at the Capitol for Warren; 25,127 for Werdel and 11,036 for Kefauver. The Tennessee Senator, snubbed by party regulars in California, brought his California tour to a close at a “fried chicken jamboree” Humphrey Says Kefauver Has Running Start WASHINGTON UP — Senator Humphrey (D-Minn) said today that other contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination “soon may find it impossible to overtake” Estes Kefauver. Humphrey called the Tennessee Senator “definitely the pace-setter in the race at this stage,” and added “it becomes more dubious all the time whether he can be stopped—and I certainly don’t want to stop him.” Humphrey said he still hasn’t made up his mind whom he will support at the Democratic convention, “but I certainly have the friendliest regard for Estes Kefauver.” On the other hand, Senators Lehman (D-Lib,NY) and O’Mahoney (D-Wyo) said in separate interviews they see no trend developing in favor of any candidate, avowed or potential. “I THINK THE picture still is wide open and I believe it is likely to remain that way right down to the nominating convention in July,” Lehman said. “Public sonhere last night with an appeal for party harmony.” timent just hasn’t started untilize yet.” Lehman has been mema possible “favorite sodate to whom the 94-wYork state delegation mito throw its support on a lots at the national convenO’Mahoney said “we w be able approximately to minute what the situation in the Democratic conventil after the Republication has met, adopted a and nominated a candidate. Lehman has been mentioned as a possible "favorite soh" candidate to whom the 94-vote New York state delegation may decide to throw its support on early ballots at the national convention. O'Mahoney said "we won't even be able approximately to determine what the situation will be in the Democratic convention until after the Republican convention has met, adopted a platform and nominated a candidate." The GOP convention is scheduled to start July 7 in Chicago. The Democrats will meet in the same city starting July 21. Humphrey said that white Kefauver had no opposition on the Democratic ballot in the Illinois presidential primary Tuesday, "he can up a very impressive vote reflecting lots of popular support." There was an occurrence, however, that Kefauver's vote in the preferential (popularity) race would win the Illinois Democratic delegation to his cause. The outcome of the preference contest is not binding on the delegation.
