Beauty Queens Need Not be Says Movie Glamor Photographer
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD (UP)—Ray Jones, dean of Hollywood's portrait photographers, loosed some tricks of trade today and took a rap at "skinny" movie queens.
Jones has served longer behind the camera than any other glamor photographer now practicing in the studios. He started lensing Mack Sennett bathing beauties back in 1923 and has shot almost every film queen since then. About the only exception: Garbo. It’s his job to make the gals look sensational, and he said that diets are often against him.
"These actresses think they have to be thin as a full in order to stay popular," he said. "I think that’s a lot of nonsense. Audiences have shown that they like to see their favorites looking healthy and filled out, not skinny."
"The skinny ones make my job difficult. It’s bad enough with the young ones, but it’s even worse with those approaching 40 or older. They get bags under their eyes, their cheeks get hollow and they get that sagging, crepe neck that is a giveaway for age. It takes a lot of retouching and diffusion to cover those things up."
That brought us to the tricks of his business. Whit is diffusion? That's a method of softening the jens and lights so the camera will be more complimentary about what it records. A traditional method of being kind to stars' on her left side only.
Veterans like Marich and Loretta Wynn know all their best pictures from phers. They have a ror handy and pose I asked Jones if he bursts of temper in studio.
"Certainly," he repeats never worries me. My camera shoots the e so I know what people like when I take them. If I get temperament ways see the cause trouble at home, diff the studio, etc.
"Maria Montez thtrum one day and I out of the place and take her picture months. But I knew son: she was taking pills that she was and her health was "I had trouble with sitting of Shelly W Frank Sinatra, btu no Shelly. Sinatra was hital troubles and a lot llicity, so he was natura

EYES, their cheeks get hollow and they get that sagging, crepe neck that is a giveway for age. It takes a lot of retouching and diffusion to cover those things up."
That brought us to the tricks of his business. Whit is diffusion?
That's a method of softening the jens and lights so the camera will be more complimentary about what it records. A traditional method of being kind to stars' faces has been to shoot the picture through a layer of gauze.
"When I see one of those gals coming with 23 layers of makeup to cover the wrinkles, I know something's got to crack," said Jones. "The standing gag around here is 'let's shoot her through the Navajo Manket.'"
Jones has shot hundreds of female forms from the Mack Sennett girls to the latest pin-up queens. I asked him if he had a favorite.
"Yes," he replied, "Danielle Darrieux. She had the most perfect face and body I have ever photographed. Another favorite of mine was Lupe Velez. I could shoot her from any angle and the picture would be good. The only trouble was getting her to stay still long enough.
"OF THE CURRENT crop, Ann Blyth has the most perfect face to photograph. She also has one of the best figures, but she won't let me do cheesecake of her. As far as leg art, the best of the new gals is Kathleen Hughes." (Starlet and daughter of writer R. Hugh Herbert.) Nearly all of the actresses have certain traits concerning their portraits, Jones remarked. Claudette Colbert can be photographed nine of 11 games.
"I had trouble with sitting of Shelly Wynn Frank Sinatra, btu not Shelly. Sinatra was her tal troubles and a lot of vicility, so he was natural."

on her left side only. Shelly Winters does not take a good picture with her mouth closed. (It's hard to imagine her without it open.)
Veterans like Marlene Dietrich and Loretta Young, who know all their best poses, do not take directions from photographers. They have a large mirror handy and pose themselves.
I asked Jones if he ever gets bursts of temper in his portrait studio.
"Certainly," he replied. But it never worries me. You see, the camera shoots the exposed ego, so I know what people are really like when I take their pictures. If I get temperament, I can always see the cause—sickness, trouble at home, difficulties with the studio, etc.
"Maria Montez threw a tantrum one day and I threw her out of the place and wouldn't take her picture for three months. But I knew the reason: she was taking vitamin pills that she was allergic to, and her health was poor."
"I had trouble with a portrait sitting of Shelly Winters and Frank Sinatra, but not because of Shelly. Sinatra was having marital troubles and a lot of bad publicity, so he was naturally upset."

GIANT TRADE JONES FOR BRAVES' ELLIOTT
NEW YORK (P)—The New York Giants' hope of repeating as National League champions brightened today following the acquisition of long ball hitting Bob Elliott from the Boston Braves.
In dire need of a replacement for the injured Monte Irvin, the Giants late last night sent 30-year old right handed pitcher Sheldon Jones and an estimated $50,000 to the Braves for the 35-year old Elliott, who can play either outfield or third base.
WILLIE MAYS APPEALS SELECTIVE SERVICE STATUS
BIRMINGHAM (P)—Willie Mays, New York Giant outfielder, today plans to appeal to Alabama Selective Service headquarters at Montgomery for deferment of his May 16 draft orders.
The appeal will be based on hardship grounds. The 20-year-old Negro athlete said he is the chief support of four of his nine brothers and sister. His stepfather is unemployed.
GLOBE TROTTERS WIN
LOS ANGELES (P)—The Harlem Globetrotters whipped a team of college All-Stars last night, 75-67, in a flashy basketball game at Shrine auditorium.
The teams have been playing each other on a barnstorming trip and the Globetrotters have won nine of 11 games.
