Stanton to Have Canteen Soon
Mrs. Marjorie McBratney met with the Savanna Civil Defense Council Saturday noon at the Lions Community clubhouse by invitation and was appointed as Canteen Chairman of the canteen being organized by the Red Cross chairman, Mrs. Ethel Korn. Mrs. McBratney has had training and experience for this work in Long Beach where she took a ten week canteen course. The canteen will be under the direction of Anaheim chapter of the American Red Cross.
The co-ordinator, Royal C. Marten, appointed Mrs. Fern Vipond as welfare chairman to contact schools in the area and offer assistance to children who need clothing or have special problems where they might need welfare assistance. If the unit cannot provide suitable assistance a civic body or club who have the proper facilities will be found.
L. A. (Dan) Patch was present and was asked if he would investigate the possibility of allowing 25 cots to be stored in Stanton to be stored for emergencies. It is not possible the unit will make arrangements to purchase some cots.
Patch said he wanted 10 auxiliary firemen to take a course supervised by Joe Scherman, county fire warden, at the nearest fire station. He also said that warden hand books are available and classes for wardens are being held at Fullerton Junior College and Orange Coast College.
In response to a suggestion made by the Savanna unit, Patch is going to have all defense groups post the names of their personnel in three prominent places in their community so that those interested in defense work or in need of help will know whom to contact.
Patch asked that a P-TA representative be asked to co-ordinate with unit. A motion was passed to invite Mrs. Betty J. Millonzi, newly elected Savanna president, to sit on the council.
