The common housefly was added to the list of insects that have become resistant to DDT and related insecticides in 1947. Starting in 1940 the first evidence on mosquito resistance was proved by tests conducted in irrigated pastures of Tulare county by University of California scientists from the College of Agriculture at Davis. Since that date abundant proof of increasing resistance by these insects to insecticides has come to light. As a result, authorities no longer recommend most of the new insecticides against houseflies. Following World War II large scale treatments of these insects with insecticides destroyed the weaker ones leaving stronger ones to repopulate. Although contrary to popular belief, individual insects did not bind or resistance to the insecticide treatments but rather the resistance factor was inherited by the spring. This involuntary self-breeding has continued to a point where a large population possesses traits in many areas. A partial solution to this problem, scientists believe, is a return to an emphasis on cultural techniques such as a reduction o breeding sources.
