Pianist Barclay Allen Plans Return After Bout with Death
By BOB THOMAS
HOLLYWOOD (NY)—Two years ago, a doctor looked at the crushed form of Barclay Allen, brilliant young pianist who had been managed in an auto accident. The doctor told Mrs. Allen: "Your husband has two hours to live."
Today Allen is ready to resume his musical career, and he credits his survival to his faith in God.
"I was never a religious man," admitted the pianist, who is now paralyzed from the chest down.
"But I believe that God was the reason that I came through. It is not something that came to me in a blinding flash, but little by little. What other reason could there be, when the doctors had given up hope for me?"
A couple of years ago, Allen was riding the crest of a sensational musical career. A dynamic pianist, he had made a hit as solo artist with the Freddy Martin band. So great was his success that he was able to form a band and tour under his own banner. Then fate intervened.
"I WAS PLAYING a date at the Cal-Neva lodge at Lake Tahoe," he recalled. "I finished late that night and was driving home when I fell asleep. The car hit an embankment and overturned."
Allen became intimate with the face of death in the months that followed. He was in the hospital almost continuously for operations and ailments that threatened to take his life. The musicians of faith and his dea productive life work at the piano playing a few m

Allen became intimate with the face of death in the months that followed. He was in the hospital almost continuously for operations and ailments that threatened to take his life. The musicians of Denver, his home town, rallied to help pay the immense medical bills.
When it appeared that he would survive, Allen was taken to his North Hollywood home, where he lives with his wife and two children, Ronnie, 10, and Peggy, 8. Then he faced the problem of finding a return to useful life. Helping him in this was the church.
"Like most kids, I had gone to Sunday school," he remarked. "But I didn't pay much attention to religion after I grew up. Since I was working in bands, I always used the excuse of working late on Saturday night for not going to church on Sunday.
"After I came home, my wife became active in the Emmanuel Lutheran church in North Hollywood. She got me to go to church with her, and it was a rewarding experience. I began to realize the scheme of things."
"I USED TO THINK of church-goers as uninteresting people. But now I have a great respect and admiration for them. I attended a brotherhood meeting at church last night, and I met some fine men."

Y's Men Schedule Installation of New Officers
Master Magician Ralph Moore, manipulator imported from Covina, provided entertainment for a meeting of the Anaheim Y's Men's club held last night at the YMCA.
The slight-of-hand artist baffled club members with rope tricks, disappearing cards and balls. During the same meeting Don Hein and Herb Leo, both of Anaheim, were introduced as new club members.
Bob Brookman was also named new secretary and Howard Hall, bulletin editor, in an earlier business meeting.
Announcement was also made of the big installation night program next Monday night when new officers for the club, as well as new officers for the Y'smenettes, club auxiliary, will be installed. Special guests will include Y's Men from throughout the Southland and presidents from other city service clubs. The occasion marks the group's "first birthday."
Guests at last night's meeting included Dave Hanson and two Newport Harbor clubmen. Community singing was led by Bob Quast, Al Casebeer presented a life sketch, and President Dave Collins presided.
