HOPEE BOUNCES BACK
SAN FRANCISCO OP — Champion Willie Hoppe boomed fast from two delcats and a severe case of nerves to tie for first place in the world three cushion billiard tournament.

Hoppe's victory elevated him into a tie with Jay Bozeman of Vallejo, Calif., for the lead. Each has a 6-2 record. Each has one game left in the round robin tournament.
Although the 16-team field is studded with talent, including 10 major conference champion and six teams hand-picked at large, Adolph Rupp's marksmen from the Blue Grass country are strongly favored to capture their fourth college crown in the past five years.

Dayton's coach Tom Blackburn whose task is to outsmart second-ranked Illinois, the Big Ten champion, in the opening game at Chicago, added his vote.
"I saw Kentucky once during the past season. I don't see how anybody can beat that club."
A DISSENTER IS Coach Ken Loeffler, whose LaSalle squad was the surprise winner of the Nationals Invitation title last week. "Like Duquesne," said Loeffler. LaSalle was snubbed by the NCAA.

Good Weather Will Bring on Abalone Hunt
BY JIM THOMAS

It is doubtful, considering the weather of the past week, that the abalone population along the California coasts have suffered much since the season opened last Sunday.
But, with the advent of spring and the promise of fairer days, thousands again will return to the rugged sport of abalone diving.
Those who go after the tasty mollures should keep in mind that a new regulation requires them to have in possession while taking the abalone an accurate measuring device to determine size.
The limit is five a day and the minimum sizes are 7 inches for reds, 6¼ for greens, 6 for pinks and five for blacks.
There is one other thing—a matter purely of conservation. The law requires that undersized abalone be returned to the water.

SAN FRANCISCO (P)—The cost of living in Los Angeles rose last month to the highest level in the history of that city, Max D. Kosoris, regional director of the Bureau of Labor statistics, reported here today.
The average retail price increased four tenths of a per cent during the month to boost the consumers' price index to 190.7, using the period 1935-39 as a base of 100. Kosoris' report said.
But don't just toss them back in the surf. Put them back as nearly as possible on the rocks where they were found.
An abalone thrown out into the water is practically as good as dead. The reason is that a sinking abalone turns over on his back and lands upside down on the bottom, easy prey for fish and crabs.
So remember, an abalone put back on a rock has a chance to protect himself and to grow to legal size. An abalone tossed out into the water is just so much fish food—and abalones are too cared and too good to eat to beossed to the fishes.
